Tarver: I’m prepared for a war against Green

By Jason Kim: Former IBF/WBA/WBC light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (28-6, 19 KO’s) is prepared for a tough fight against International Boxing Organization (IBO) cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO’s) on July 20th at the Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Tarver, 42, expects a tough fight from Green, but figures to have too much experience and talent for Green to be able to cope with in this fight.

Tarver had to come down in weight for this fight, as he fought last year at heavyweight and weighed a chunky looking 221 lbs for his last fight against Nagy Aguilera in October 2010. Tarver says he took the weight of slowly and in the correct way to make sure that he didn’t drain himself in getting down to the 200 pound weight limit.

“We came prepared for war,” Tarver said to ABC,net.au. “That’s what we’re going to be in for. I know he has three losses on his record so I know he can be defeated. It’s my job to break him, break his will, then knock him out.”

Tarver will have to set a fast pace because Green will win the fight if he’s able to land as often as Tarver, because his punches will no doubt be a lot harder. Plus, Tarver will be the visiting fighter and it’s going to be difficult to try and win a decision in Green’s home country.

Green has good skills but has always been more of a puncher than a boxer. The thing that Tarver has going for him in this fight is that Green has been taking it easy since he made his comeback in 2009, and has faced mostly lesser opposition with the exception of BJ Flories, who gave Green some problems. Had Flores been a little busier he might have beaten Green. Tarver has a great chin and isn’t afraid to mix it up. He could be the one that gives Green his first loss since Anthony Mundine out-boxed Green five years ago in 2006 in a 12 round decision win.
