Maidana vs. Guerrero promises to be a toe-to-toe affair

By Sean McDaniel: Former two time world champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) thinks he has the power to match Argentinian slugger Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) in the power department in their fight next month at at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California.

Guerrero, 28, has been a slugger for most of his career and has generally been the stronger fighter compared to his usually smaller opponents. However, with Guerrero moving up in weight for the third time in the past two years, he could find that his power won’t have much affect on the harder hitting Maidana.

In the past while fighting at featherweight, Guerrero was knocking out pretty much all of his opponents. That’s changed in the past two years, as Guerrero has knocked out only one opponent in his last five fights and that’s not a good sign going into this fight.

In interviews, Guerrero is saying that he thinks he has the power to stand and trade with Maidana and get the better of him in this fight. But Guerrero is no longer scoring knockouts and that has to suggest that something isn’t right with his game. He can’t blame it on a broken toe or some other excuse. Guerrero had the perfect opponent to knockout in his last fight against Michael Katsidis but was unable to dent his chin in any way. Now Guerrero is facing an even bigger puncher in Maidana and is willing to trade with him. Maidana isn’t fast but if Guerrero stands in front of him it’s going to give Maidana real chance of hurting Guerrero and/or taking the fight out of him the way that Orlando Salido did to him.
