Arum moving Pacquiao to CBS/Showtime won’t change anything – Manny’s still fighting Mosley

By Chris Williams: It doesn’t really matter to me that Bob Arum has decided to move Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and however many of his Top Rank stable fighters to CBS/Showtime away from HBO. The last time I checked, Pacquiao is still facing 39-year-old Shane Mosley and that is still an awful fight in my mind. Whether it’s shown on HBO or Showtime, it’s still a bad fight. It’s just a change of scenery, that’s all.

The price for the pay-per-view card will probably be just the same and there’s no real benefit to you and me other than it’s being shown on Showtime. This is really about Pacquiao and Cotto, because I can’t see boxing fans paying too much attention to Arum’s other Top Rank stable fighters – Antonio Margarito, Yuri Foreman, Joshua Clottey, ..etc – being moved to Showtime as well. I’m sure some of those fighters will still be shown on HBO. It’s Pacquiao and Cotto that boxing fans will really care about, and neither of those guys will be around for too much longer.

Pacquiao supposedly has three years left in his career, and Cotto, who knows? Cotto can go at any time if he starts taking losses all of a sudden. But if Arum is still going to be putting Pacquiao in with his stable fighters Clottey, Margarito and Cotto, then I think HBO will be better off without Pacquiao, because those aren’t competitive fights and it’s really distasteful to have to pay $50+ to watch Pacquiao face over-matched opposition each time out. Boxing fans want to see competitive fights and the fights with Clottey, Margarito and Cotto have been one-sided mismatches going in the door. The same with the Mosley fight. That’s even worse. Mosley looks totally shot. I don’t think boxing fans are going to be all broken up about Pacquiao being moved to CBS/Showtime.

They won’t care unless Arum starts matching Pacquiao up with better fighters for a change. I would be happy if Arum put Pacquiao in with the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander, but I wouldn’t be happy if they’re forced to come up to the welterweight division to face Manny. I would prefer Pacquiao finally face Juan Manuel Marquez or Andre Berto instead. I also want to see Pacquiao fight Sergio Martinez, but at a reasonable catch weight.

good for HBO!!! just stick with the real fights golden boy is bringing…. Bob arum is like Al davis they pushed all the right buttons back in their days but nw all they do is shoot and miss!! I dont think Arum knows how to set up a compelling fight no more he stack up just old and dry fighters who he thinks are stil in their prime time shape. All he care about is making more money anyway with his gritty ass he dont care bout boxing so it dnt matter

  • Dam dummies says:

It’s strange that as soon as Roger get his situation behind him arum move to showtime.. Just another duck move, no way mayweather will fight on showtime, that a step backwards.. Arum made the move because he knows that pac is at his end and he ruined all his other fighters careers.. Hey milk pac for two r three more fights, retire and let his company self destruct.. It’s classic billionaire ego, destroy it before I let someone else run it beside his some just died…

  • evilclown says:

so you want Pacman to fight Bradley/Alexander but he has to move down to their fighting weight. Also you want Pacman to fight Martinez but he has to move up to Martinez’s weight. As i recall Pacman is the one being chased, not the other way around..hater

“Looking at the majority of these posts I have to believe that most Pacquiao fans are little Flip midgets too, …..”

Wow …look whose talking….you must be blind or totally dumb, low IQ…. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is only 5′ 8-3/4″ compared to your average ancestors The Masai Warriors who stand 6′ 9″ to over 7′ tall…If you stand your idol Floyd Jr. beside LeBron or Yao Ming…who is the midget now? Some Black dude who was not lucky enough to get the right genes….Floyd Jr…hehehe.

What can you say now? Dude?

  • bri says:

@zoomx…. u are serously saying watching a mayorga vs. cotto two has beens is better then watching the #3 p4p and winner of fighter od the year. cotto who couldnt sell any tickets vs. formen in new york his backyard. arum had to buy all the tickets and gave them away when press started talking about the low ticket sales. u go watch cotto vs mayorga all u want.

  • bri says:

hbo might not be the only game in town but its the biggest baller in town and the one who generates and gives out the most money. and a lot more people have hbo then showtime. arum should have let cotto fight martinez. but he knows what would happen.

  • zoomX says:

bad move hbo, they will show martinez vs (unknown) dzinziruk over cotto vs mayorga (cbs), LOL martinez is not even known to his own country argentina, what hbo is thinking? it all started when berto will get $1.85 m for the $3m offer by hbo for cotto vs berto fight. LOL berto who couldnt draw fans to all his fight and he will get more than cotto? whoever in hbo doing all this decision is an idiot.

  • tiger1223usa says:

mayweather the greatest that never was !

  • zoomX says:

pacquiao mosley will make 1.5m ppv as minimum if the cbs/showtime will do it. it reaches more home than hbo. and of course chris william and floyd fans will die in jealousy if that happens, LOL cant wait to see that happen, I will also wait for more hate comments and whining from them, LOL this is getting better.

  • Manny Beat This Manny Beat That says:

People complain about Pacquiao vs. Mosley?

    Why? Too easy for Pacquiao?

So you think Mayweather vs. Mosley was a good match? Just about even you think?

So Pacquiao is out of these two fighters league?

  • JesusJones says:

Top Rank not negotiating with any of the prime Golden Boy fighters now HBO. Looks like Arum is playing poker. Lets see if Don King/Maywweather bites. It’s a strong carrot for Mayweather to bargain with if he really wants the fight. HBO has become to big even for Netflix, LOL!

  • I am a paper champion but I am rich!. says:

Who cares what network pedman fights on? I mean really! He could fight Sugar Ray Leanord next and pactards would justify somehow! They should only be talking about his poor choice of opponents as of late! Pactards will pay to see him fight bums no matter what network..

  • aldawg says:

Floyd jr. can now come out of the closet. The boogie man is now on CBS/Showtime. Floyd jr. can now cherry pick his way through the junior welterweight division like: Matthew Hatton, Paul Maliggiani, Nate Campbell, Steve Forbes, Lamont Peterson and Juan Urango. LMAO…

  • elboricua says:

Arum doesn’t understand that HBO is the most powerful network in boxing. And to HBO boxing is just a hobby anyway…And now they want to get serious by showing fight that are more competitive.

HBO is into big production of original series which pays the bills for HBO.

    Sopranos
    Boardwalk Empire
    Rome
    Entourage
    24/7

  • Unknown says:

Very simple, HBO is not the only game in town, period. Competition is always good for business.

  • elboricua says:

Why would HBO would pay for Cotto vs Retired, old shot Mayorga?

Even Showtime would not buy this. They are just producing the PPV for Arum. Sending they announcers and productions team…that’s all. It’s not like the bought the fight…And good for them for not being dumb.

  • elboricua says:

HBO got tired of Arum. Al Haymond, GBP and Lou Dibella have all close relations with HBO. Arum and his garbage in-house fights are not welcome at HBO.

I am an HBO subscriber and I rather see my money go to “Boardwalk Empire” rather than garbage fights by Top Rank. We are seeing real fights now, like Williams vs Martinez. Berto vs Ortiz, Bradley vs Alexander…Does Arum gets it.

HBO is tired of in-house fighters. And Larry Merchant will soon leave too for backing Arum garbage’s fights.

  • Thomas says:

probaly because showtime will ask for less money off of arum than hbo

  • jabhookuppercut says:

    Mayweather(HBO) + PacMan (Showtime) = NO FIGHT

  • kam.uk says:

SICK OF YOUR MOANING MOSLEY V PACQUIAO IS MADE GET OVER IT.

  • the fight doctor says:

ROSS GREENBURG TOLD BOB ARUM WE HERE AT HBO WANT TO SEE REALL FIGHTS, NOT THAT BS PUT TOGOTHER STUFF YOU KEEP SELLING US . HBO WILL THROW ALL THERE MONEY AT MAYWEATHER NOW.. TO ME ITS BOB ARUMS WAY OF NEVER LETTING PAC MAN FIGHT MAYWEATHER.

  • bri says:

hbo also probably didnt want to spend money on a 24\7 show with the manny mosley fight as well.

  • bri says:

dont think the move was forced think it was hbo not bending to arums wishes with the cotto fight and what ever other b.s. fights he wanted to set up this year with all his fighters in general.

  • Lou says:

WTF the move to Showtime is a sneaky way for Aurm to never give Mayweather a payday for fighting Pacquiao even though I doubt Mayweather would have had the balls to fight Pacquiao

  • Lou says:

If that’s Pacquiao hitting Mosley like Mora did he’s going to knock out like hatton

  • jay jay says:

couldnt agree with u more i really dont think manny is that smart as a person

  • WTF! says:

It is interesting that Arum is moving to a different network, especially when you consider that Mayweather is HBO’s guy. Does anyone know if the move was forced?
