Huck decisions Lebedev, but looks more like a loser

By Jason Kim: Now that I’ve gotten a chance to see the WBO cruiserweight clash between champion Marco Huck (31-1, 23 KO’s) and previously unbeaten Russian challenger Denis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KO’s) I finally know what all the fuss is about the bout. Huck, while fighting in his adopted country of Germany, defeated Lebedev by a 12 round split decision while fighting in front of a large pro-Huck crowd at the Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany. The two European judges scored the fight identically with 115-113 and 115-113, whereas the American judge scored it 116-112 for Lebedev. I personally had the fight scored 117-111 for Lebedev.

It wasn’t a very close fight from what I saw of it. I want to give the two European judges the benefit of the doubt in this fight. One thing that may have influenced them is that the German crowd would scream loudly every time Huck would attempt to throw a punch, but unfortunately most of the time Huck would badly miss with wild combinations that would hit only air. It didn’t matter to the German crowd.

They still cheered loudly each time. This is really only thing that I can think of that would have impressed the two judges to give decision to Huck. He wasn’t throwing enough punches in most of the rounds and merely moving around the ring while being stalked by Lebedev. Another thing I noticed was the referee was calling shots low by Lebedev when he was landing punches on Huck’s belt line. Twice the referee stopped action to give Lebedev stern warnings for punches that were perfectly legal right on the belt line.

Perhaps the referee couldn’t see the action, but it seemed pretty clear the shots were thrown into the black area of Huck’s trunks. The problem here is that the referee gave Lebedev a warning after the second called low blow in the 5th, telling him that was the last one he was going to be able to get away with. As it turns out, this had a dramatic affect on the fight because Lebedev stopped throwing body punches almost completely after that.

Previous to the needless warning, Lebedev had been badly hurting Huck with body shots in every round and had succeeded in injuring one of Huck’s ribs in the 4th. By warning Lebedev, he basically saved Huck from getting hit with additional shots to the midsection. However, I kind of doubt that the two European judges would have scored it any differently because they were scoring rounds for Huck in which he only landed four to five punches during the entire rounds. I don’t don’t understand that given that Lebedev was landing a lot of punches to the head of Huck in every round of the fight.

In the 12th round, it seemed peculiar that Huck’s trainer told him to stay away from Lebedev, as if he knew the fight was in the bag. As far as I can tell, it Lebedev looked to have a commanding lead at that point and it was Huck who needed a knockout to win. At any rate, Huck ran around the ring the entire 12th round doing very little. The German crowd still screamed wildly for every missed punch by Huck, which was many.

Okay, okay Huck did not have a stellar night but what if his rib was broken in the fourth? His typical fight this was not.
Otherwise Huck did enough to win. His fight was not dazzling but the Russian did not stand out either. Lebedev was active but not effective hitting the gloves of the opponent does not secure points or a victory. This fight was probably close but no way did Lebedev win this thing.

I would love some of these people who think Huck won to justify how throwing one or two punches per round and then running away the rest of the time is how to win a boxing match. Lebedev won pretty much every round and the only person who got hurt was Huck who has his rib cracked in the 4th and then got on his bicycle. CLOSE LOL!

You;ll find that most of the ‘neutral websites, like fightnews, boxing talk, eurosport all say the decision was completely reasonable, which it most definitely was

    ***
The boxingtalk article was from Sauerland, the promoters for Huck. What do you expect?

  • fan game says:

No robbery at all. It was a close fight, with many rounds difficult to score. I scored it 114-113 for Huck. It was a fight that could’ve gone either way, and the home town fighter got the nod. No controversy there at all. Anyone who scored it for Lebedev by 3 or more rounds, either hasn’t a clue how to score a fight and/or just has a bias against Sauerland and any fighter associated with them. Peace

being rocked and being caught off balance is a completly different thing..he was that rocked he kept walking forward lol no prob…stu (pid) weve had this b4 ino im right boxing has been a fickle sport over the years men who dont deserve to be the champion end up ebing a champion because they can talk the talk so for he hasnt walked the walk..if he does then great but so far he hasnt

  • fgdfgdfgdf says:

    what a robbery – i hate sauerland

  • J3M says:

@ mike and fisty (newbies I guess?)

Clean punches to the head that make the other boxer (Lebedev) stumbling around are more impressing the judges than shots to the body where Huck does not even move back. It is also about impressing the judges. Combinations (even partly blocked) are impressing the judges although each punch is not actually landed.
Teh fight was close, Huck is the champion and Lebedev did not show enough to get the belt for the judges. Get over it.

oh & this fight was a terrible robbery…lebedev was clearly better & won more rds.

haye won cos valuev landed nothing, well not nothing but very little.
haye was on the move constantly, he didnt land very often but when he did it scored whereas valuev landed very little.

valuev was rocked hugely, very visible to all in the crowd.

on that occasion they had no choice but to award to haye.”

this. & anyone who thinks differently is an idiot who doesn’t understand boxing (that’s you lil g). :)

  • Mike says:

J3m is now the poster with the least boxing knowledge in the history of the site, congratulations. Body punches worth less LOL.

  • BIG G says:

inkspired they both landed very little thats why it should have been a draw if ud have seen the holyfield valuev fight which somehow valuev won ud know wat i mean…and ino wat ur talking about by sayin the powers that be gave haye the nod haye is far more of a money maker than valuev y do u thnk they gave him the decision and y do u think he has foughts bums since winning it..it wudnt suprise me if the wba stripped haye of his title if he does fight wlad after all they did pull (kind of) the same shananigans when chagaev fought wlad, because every1 knows the guv bodys dont want the titles owned by one man

  • fgdfgdfgdf says:

even the german tv station that transmitted the fight calls it a robbery and the commentator henry maske also called it a misdevision dirctly after the fight. sauerland ist the problem here and he is doing it again and again.

but if u look haye from then on had a contract or some other setup with sauerland.
so maybe the powers that be decided haye should win.

  • Insider says:

Huck was lucky to get through this fight never mind win it what was the judges thinking.

I turned this fight off at round 10, it was garbage also.

I hope they dont have a rematch, Huck wouldnt anyways.

  • BIG G says:

inkspired stay off the pipe m8.u say u cant get a decision in germany way did haye get against valuev which he clearly didnt deserve???that right a victory..and ill not even mock u about sayin that the klits will get the decision..every1 knows if it goes to decision wlad wud win easily hayes only chance of a win is knockout but i doubt hed even be able to do that..this fight shud have been a draw but im guessin the higher punch output one it in the end

  • J3M says:

People who say that Lebedev clearly won that have no ide of boxing. The cleanest shots were landed by Huck (Lebedev was stumbling around in the early rounds). Lebedev landed mostly body shots and that’s less points on the scorcards. Huck is still the champion, Lebedev did not show enough to take the belt this time, that’s it.

  • Horst Krause says:

…actually “Felix Sturm” is an excellent boxer and is not working with Sauerland Events. It was just to give an insight on the marketing in Germany.

  • Horst Krause says:

…and yes, they knew the scores. Ulli Wegener, Hucks coach, said, that Huck shall stay back in defense for the last 2 rounds, he knew the score. How could he?! Huck was in trouble I was so sure he could only win by ko. It was not the first time, I saw Wegener whispering to his boxers “we´re leading on scorecards” in other fights. It´s all about a business alliance between Sauerland, the german public channel “ARD” and the WBO, which is owned in this case by the management.
They bring cheap talents (mostly hard punchers) from with migrant backround, pump them up in the media as “Germans” giving them new “german” names (like “Marco Huck” or “Felix Sturm”) and and then start the show. Huck just fought 47 fights in his whole career, almost no experience in the amateur boxing, therefore no skills just punching power. Like Arthur Abraham who´s actually a great talent but a limited boxer as we saw in Helsinki. I used to like both fighters but now my eyes where opened…

  • Horst Krause says:

I am a german and saw this robbery in German TV. Everyone who has any understanding of boxing saw that Lebedev was boxing on a different level clearly dominating the fight. It´s a joke and embarrasing for German Boxing what happened there last night. Sauerland Event is a Mafia like Don Kings empire. F…ck boxing, it´s all about money. Schade.

  • enzo calzage says:

When haye ko’s wlad in germany,he will still lose by split decision.

  • Anonymous says:

Germany is the place where Sauerlands do whatever they want. Lebedev was robbed. Bookmakers also got Lebedev as a winner by the final bell.

  • THE TRUTH. says:

THIS WAS ONE OF THE WORST DECISIONS I HAVE EVER SEEN, GERMANY EXCEEDED ITSELF THIS TIME, HUCK, THE BULLY, RAN ALL NIGHT, MADE TO MISS WITH MOST OF HIS PUNCHES, HE EVEN LOOKED SCARED,I FOUND IT HARD TO GIVE HIM A ROUND. GERMANS ARE COMPLETELY LACKING IN MORALS.

  • azko says:

Huck landed the more clean punches (look at the head of lebedev after the match)

Also don’t forget that Huck fought with a broken rib, without that i think Lebedev would be destroyed !

  • inkspired says:

you do not go to germany and win a points decision !!

you have to knock the guy out !!

its always been that way and always will be……thats why the klits and thier management will push for the haye fight to be held there.
either way they get the win……FACT

  • John brikell says:

I completely agree. I know It`s hard to win on points in the champions hometown but this was such a clear cut victory for Lebedev that I was stunned by the scorecards. The sauerland corner chereed Immediately efter the fight in a manner wich makes me think that they had recievd the scores during the fight.
