Berto wants Mosley, Cotto and Pacquiao in 2011

By Chris Williams: WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO’s) will be making his 5th defense of his World Boxing Council belt on November 27th against Freddy Hernandez (29-1, 20 KO’s) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Berto, 27, feels confident that he’ll win that fight, and few boxing fans would disagree with Berto. He’s a lot faster than Hernandez and a bigger puncher as well. Berto is already looking beyond the Hernandez fight and has three big named fighters that he wants to take on next year in 2011: Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao. Those are fights that have a decent chance of being put together. One of the reasons why is because Berto’s fights are regularly shown on HBO, and he’s got a lot of fans in the United States to pool from to come and see him fight or at least purchase his fights on pay-per-view, as long as it’s against a popular fighter.

Berto, in an article by Chris Robinson at examiner.com, says “If all goes well [with his fight against Hernandez next month], like I said, me and Mosley have unfinished business. I would love to take care of early next year. The Cotto fight is another fight people have been talking about for the past two years. And hopefully we can finish the year off by getting Manny Pacquiao.” That would be a huge year for Berto if he was able to get those three fights. The only fighters that Berto would have missed is Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan. However, the chances of Berto beating Mosley, Cotto and Pacquiao probably aren’t very good. I can see him beating one, possibly two of them, but not all three. Berto has looked too vulnerable in fights against Steve Forbes, Juan Urango and Luis Collazo.

If Berto is struggling against those fighters, then I really don’t like his changes against even better fighters. As bad as Berto has looked in fights against Forbes and Collazo, I can see Hernandez beating Berto and maybe by knockout. Berto can dish it out but he doesn’t look good in taking shots to the head. He seems to get flustered easily and come apart.

I think Berto would have a good chance of beating Mosley, if Shane looks the same way he did against Sergio Mora recently. Mosley has looked shot in his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mora. Facing a guy like Berto, who would be fighting at home, would make it very tough on Shane to beat.

I meant to say, we would go after Cotto in 2012 instead of 2010.

If 007 was Berto’s manager our goals would go something like this:We would give Mosley, and Khan some in 2011.This would be great for Berto’s resume because Mosley is still a huge name and he can bring PPV buys. I know Mosley looked aged in his last fight against Mora but you can never tell which Shane Mosley would step into the ring on fight night. My guess is that Shane would bring his “A” game but it will not be enough against Berto the Beast! Next, we would focus on Khan. Khan is a good fighter but he hasn’t reached that level of greatness yet. Khan’s last fight he looked average and he has a weak chin. If he is lucky enough to get past Maidana and the winner of Bradley vs Alexander, his dreams of fighting Pac or Mayweather will only be a dream! Berto by KO! In 2010, we would pursue Cotto. Cotto would be a huge challenge for us but I believe speed kills. In Cotto’s last fight against Foreman, Cotto looked great but his body has taken a beating over the years. Cotto has to face Margarito in 2011 for a rematch whether he( Margarito) wins or loses his match against Pac in November. Margarito will put dents in Cotto but Berto’s body shots and speed would end Cotto’s chances of becoming Champ! Berto by decision. Next, we would line up a tune up fight to stay busy in the same year. Lastly, if Pac is still available and not in Congress or something, we would hope for a Berto vs Pac bout in 2013. By then Pac’s speed would have slowed a little but his power and technique is still second to none. My guess is, this fight would end in a draw but Berto would’ve earned a lot of money, a unblemished record and a new name…. Berto “The Ghost Moster”.

I thinks he’s asking for more than he can handle asking for those three fighters in the same year. You’re still pretty young Andre, take it easy.. You gotta crawl before you walk.. At this moment he has a shot in getting thru Mosley, but a dificult one. I don’t think he’s ready for Cotto or Pacquiao next year. I think he should wait a few more years. If he keeps on doing what he’s doing (which I think he will) he’ll be ready for these guys. But not yet.

  • malim6 says:

Berto to fight Floyd Jr. surely, will sign the contract immediately without thinking.

  • malim6 says:

He has to self proclaime greater than Floyd Mayweather Jr. to have a chance to fight the 2 top rated fighters, Cotto and Khan. Who knows it will work. Just try to challenge that coward.

  • Boxing Don says:

Bero was called out by Paul the Punisher Williams for saying he was the best Welterweight in the world. Paul disagreed called out Berto and Berto ran down to South Beach dug a hole and hid until he got Quintana on a contract. You are the champion and should be calling out Williams, Martinez, Cintron, or rematch with Callazo. Many believe you lost that fight! You won t do it because its two risky. Berto is not a real champion! People pleas stop wasting your time and money on this guy. He’s a fraud

  • basch says:

Berto will beat mosley..idk it’d be close with cotto but i think cotto will win in a decision and well i think manny will be berto..i’d love to see him fight all three within the next two years tho.

  • elbeto says:

He should focus on Freddy! hes going to get Schooled like he did agaisnt Collazo!!!

  • Gero says:

Berto is a hype job bum. The moment he steps up to fight any of those names in this articles title its curtains for him.

  • Floyd's On Roids says:

Andre Berto should fulfill his fight with Shane Mosley. (Which was cancelled earlier this year because of the earthquake in Haiti.) This would be an entertaining fight. A Mosley defeat would look good on Berto’s boxing resume. And, If Mosley defeats Berto, he’ll be the new WBC welterweight
champion, which is good leverage for a future superfight.

  • sol says:

Nothing to gain from fighting Mosley, more to lose. Better he fought Cotto, that could go either way.

  • hodgy says:

Kell brook vs andre berto would be a real good fight

  • Manny The Clown says:

Manny The Clown is the easiest fighter in the world to hit. Berto is a BIG BIG puncher. I see him knocking the Clown clean out!!!

  • bri says:

@oli… berto is not avoding anyone no one will give him a shot. what is he suppose to do? not fight at all??????? berto is no coward and cotto fight would be easy win for him mosley at 147 will still be strong. would love to see a manny berto fight. would love to see manny fight any top contender instead of what he has been doing. hopefully berto gets a shot soon to show what he is made of.

  • hitmaaaaaaaanhattooooooon says:

3 losses in a row if he fought these 3. Typical over-hyped yank

  • ashishwarrrior says:

    no he doesnt

  • Oli says:

No he doesnt. Berto wants light welterweights and unknown welterweight chumps. Anyone top level will knock this coward out.

  • sifufor says:

I agree that Berto may not get past Cotto. If he wants Pacquiao he should aim for Amir Kahn, instead of Mosley. I think if he beats Kahn, he will be noticed. But I don;t think he wants to fight Pacquiao so soon.
