Schaefer predicts 3 million PPV buys for Mayweather-Mosley

By Sean McDaniel: At yesterday’s press conference in New York, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made a bold prediction, stating that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley bout will sell 3 million pay per view buys on May 1st.

That’s an excellent number if this was a fight that matched two huge mega stars, but Mosley might not be a big enough pay per view attraction to help Mayweather attain those kinds of numbers. There’s also a big question as to whether Mayweather in his own right is a big per view star to get those kinds of numbers.

In the fights where Mayweather has done well on PPV, he’s faced a big star across from him such as Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and most recently Juan Manuel Marquez. Mayweather hasn’t brought in huge numbers when matched against an opponent that wasn’t a proven pay per view seller. And for Mosley, the fights that he’s been involved with that have done well on pay per view have had De La Hoya as his opponent. Mosley’s other fights against Fernando Vargas and Winky Wright didn’t have huge numbers.

I think the Mayweather-Mosley fight will do well on pay per view, but nowhere close to three million buys. That’s way too high for this fight. My guess is it will do one and a half million at best, maybe slightly more or slightly less, but I can’t see it even reaching two million. Mosley has been out of boxing for a year, and hasn’t helped himself by being out of the ring for such a long time.

And Mayweather isn’t popular enough on his own to create a huge three million pay per view without a big star like Manny Pacquiao or De La Hoya facing him. Mosley is a great fighter, but he hasn’t built up a huge fan base perhaps because of his modest, unassuming personality. It takes more than that to win over fans. In other countries like England or the Philippines, a fighter can be humble and still be hugely popular, but not in the United States.

It’s totally different here. To become a big star here, you have to be in people’s face, look good, fight well and be other the top with your personality. It helps to have blazing hand speed and incredible power to be sure, but the personality department has a big part of making someone a star.

Over fourteen thousand tickets were sold in the first fifteen minutes for the Mayweather vs. Mosley fight.

How does pacman want no part of drug testing yet people say Floyd ducked him? Hell even pacmans camp sent mayweather an email saying if pacman fails a drug test would they agree to keep it quiet and still fight. Pacman is dirty and anyone with half a brain cell can see it. I cant wait for him to go off the juice to fight PBF and get the asswhipping his cheating ass deserves. To those who think he is clean go back and watch all his fights and study his career. Noone gets knocked out by small puny feathers and then goes to taking cotto punches and gains speed and power.

    @1234,

Come on man that way of thinking is why
the music industry is dying right now. People would rather go out and get it for free than support good music. If the fight is a good fight to you spend the $50 or $55 on it. We make people rich every time we go out and buy anything so what’s your point 1234? Somebody is getting paid from us posting on this forum.

I think it’s possible. The kind of promotional efforts they’re putting together is something that I have never seen before.

  • onits says:

1.2 million buys i guess. americans are not interested in this fight coz they are ashamed of floyd ducking midget pacman..

  • wowzabean says:

Ya well I don’t think even the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight can put together 3 million, especially in this climate. May/Mosley can possibly scrape together close to May/ODLH, I won’t be too shocked if they beat it though. That being said I disagree somewhat Luvboxing. Any combination of the top 3 WW Pac, Shane, Floyd would make a ton of money, but I think Pac/Mosley would be the 2nd best fight. In terms of excitement anyway, not sure about numbers.

That being said I’m sure you’d agree if it’s Pac/Mosley if Shane can pull it off, will pull bigger numbers.

  • LuvBoxing says:

I just don’t see 3 million even though no one thought the JMM would come close to a million either. GDP called the 1 million and it happened.

We will see what they are thinking about two weeks before the fight when they start looking at preorders, internet activety and other barometers.

I do honestly think this fight can do 2 million buys though. This is the two best American fighters in the world right now and two of the Top 5 P4P best fighters in the world. This is THE mega-fight, outside of Mayweather v Pac. This is the 2nd best fight that can be made, simple as that and it is going to sell.

To the poster who said it will do about what the JMM fight did, I would like to talk with you about some ocean front property I have for sale.

    Tweezy,

You make me laugh. The Sun revolves around the Earth too I bet………

  • neukid says:

Would you ever hear Kobe or Lebron say I dont care about basketball fans, jeter or A rod the same thing about baseball fans, Brees or Manning to football fans. no youll never hear those from them, only Floyd has the temerity to say that to boxing fans I hope will be rewarded accordingly.

  • chinquanto says:

Im not buying it ,because its a fake fony fight to get a final pay day for mosley who will easily lose to fmjr and retire, and to set up the next MEGA big pay day with Manny, when Fmjr can retire after he gets beat or have a couple of rematches to rake in more dough What a country America

  • Tweezy316 says:

I don’t know if it’ll do 3 million but we gotta remember it’s still about 2 months away plus we get a 24/7 so people might be singing a different tune in a lil bit. 2nd how does he consider Pacquiao to be a big star? More like big hype. When did he do over 2 million buys? If he’s so huge where is the hype around his fight? How many sales are they prediciting on that one? 300,000? And even that’s pushing it. And the writer is saying that Juan Manuel Marquez was a big star that’s why Floyd got to 1,000,000 buys lol when will Floyd get his props. If you combine both Marquez-Pacquiao fights they don’t even get 1,000,000 so come on now that’s two people that you said Floyd needed that couldn’t even get 1 million together in TWO fights!!! Floyd is the Cash Cow and he will prove it May 1st. And Manny is all hype and he will prove it March 13. Nuff said

PAC man won’t fight u unless your washed up or coming off a loss or a bum altogether hatton retired Oscar retired morales retired cotta damaged should retire but he’s gonna do what pack does fight this bum Forman for. A belt who the he’ll knows which one it is or who he is to say he was a champ in for different divisons keep your belts don’t mean anything if the best don’t fight the best PAC will retire before he fights a truly great fighter n his prime period please name one who PAC the media champ

  • smart move says:

Cant wait for the fight. This is a real champiionship fight, not that sparring session that Manny Pacquaio has set up with the flat footed, stationary, throe 5 punches a round Clottey.

Thats what Pacquaio gets for trying to come into fights juiced up, he gets to fight the 2nd tier caliber fighter, not the “Big Chief”.

Clottey was just so desperate that he wouldve accepted a 90-10 split with the money at a 130lb catchweight.

I dont repect either fighter, both are bummmms.

How did Floyd duck Pac? Floyd accepted Pac’s demands — huge $$s for any/each pound over Floyd was over 147lbs. But Pac didn’t accept Floyd’s — random blood testing [for each of us]. How does requesting a fair fight = “ducking”? Help me understand.

    ——–

That’s right Patrick. I’m glad you believe in me. Thanks! …Floyd

Seriously though, don’t you find it odd that PBF agreed to 50-50 so fast after he’s been saying before the negotiation that Pac will never get 50%? Don’t you find it odd that PBF agreed so quickly to pay $10 million per pound penalty? I don’t even think Floyd has that kind of money to burn.

That is the art of deception. Make people believe that you want the fight while knowing all along that you’ll get out of the fight.

You have been fooled by Floyd. Take medication that will improve your intellect, and you might realize what the majority already know, PBF is scared of Pacman.

  • yeah yeah says:

    im not buying pac fight…

  • Bob says:

I not buying it I’ll spend my money on Pac

  • wowzabean says:

3 million? I’m not even sure if Pacquiao/Mayweather could put together that number, let alone Mosley. The fight will do well, possibly over 1.5 million buys, no where near 3 mill.

  • rob says:

i say it has a good chance to do 2mil with a strong undercard with great mexican fighters…3mil is pushing it put if marquez and floyd did over 1mil and sold out in movie theaters then im sure one of the biggest fights sicne the oscar and floyd fight could do 2mil the say over 14thousand tickets in 15mins thats better the floyd and marquez sold before fight night and they havent even said who will be on the under card so 2mil i can see 3mil i dont…pac and floyd 3mil easily

  • santi perres says:

Schaefer will be very disappointed once the numbers are in. Thats a lofty estimate for a guy who is harvard educated ex wall street investment banker. Floyds pull had been diminished by his ducking of Pacquiao and he will be lucky to get a million buys.

  • roy says:

Schaefer is no different than Arum, they always talk in hyperbole just to promote the fight,1.5mil. more or less is realistic,in the previous fights of Floyd,Marquez is the lesser draw among his three opponents, but because of brilliant marketing it generated more than a million buys,it was postponed due to fake injury of Floyd just to held it in mexican holiday, tecate beer gave a rebate if you bought the ppv, buyers were mostly latinos, despite of this mgm seats were not sold out.

  • roberto says:

This fight will be bigger than Mayweather/Hatton and Mayweather/the Mexican urine guy; perhaps not as big as Mayweather/De La Hoya but will be a much better fight.

  • Free one says:

He probably say’s 3 million steps of running by floydy.. Cuzzz that’s what he does in tha ring… Running till tha fight end

  • chakyun says:

What? Again wwwwhat? Very ambitious goal and I wonder how they can reach that target if few latinos will watch that fight. Remember Dela Hoya vs Mayweather passed 2 million buys because Dela Hoya was the pride of latinos community. Mayweather? well he´s the pride of his own kind, and what can we say about Mosley, he is nice and people symphatize him. Smart people buy PPV for $50 and shares them for another 50 people more, while the others are just glued in youtube because it will be shown for sure a minute after round by round or livestream FOR FREE!

  • z says:

3 mil? wow im very interested in this fight and def not a floyd hater but 3 mil is outrageous. if i had to guess ide guess around 1.5-1.75 tops

  • the fight doctor says:

question for all you pac nuts. out of the last 3 fight that pbf and pac roid has had on ppv who out sold who????? that tell you right there who the ppv cash cow are, and it damm sure aint pac roid. as much hate as you guys has for pbf ,more people still watch him fight than pac roid. 2 fights with a true mexican warrior jm marquez and they could not even do a million, pac is so overrated and will never fight a african american fighter not african fighter but african american peace…

  • Arnel says:

In his dreams. 3 million fans are gonna watch Mayweather “RUN” the rest of the time and jab his way to another boring victory? Don’t think so.

  • fenhyip says:

    the bullshhhhhht 3 millions

  • mrspacman says:

all i have to say is that this fight is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Pacquiao Vs The guy who lost to the guy he just beat.

  • BIG T says:

I will buy it. Pusy Pac was scared of 25 million.

  • ICEMAN says:

YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT SEAN, ELLERBE’S JUST HYPING THE FIGHT. THAT’S AN OUTRAGEOUS PREDICTION WHEN EVRYBODY KNOWS IT’S GONNA BE A BORING FIGHT.

  • Jimbo says:

3 million is probably pushing it a bit.
