Why should I purchase the Pacquiao-Clottey card?

By Chris Williams: Besides the Mach 13th main even between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey looking more and more like a gross mismatch of epic proportions, the undercard frankly stinks to the high heavens in my view. I’ve already seen four mismatches in a row involving Pacquiao being put in with old or pretty much shot fighters, but I don’t think I can stomach seeing him fight another hopelessly out classed fighter and having to pay $49.95 to see it.
Let’s look at what we get on the undercard to see if it would be somehow worthwhile to ignore the mismatch in the main event:
Roberto Marroquin vs. TBA – This guy’s a prospect. I have no interest in paying to see him fight.
Salvador Sanchez vs. TBA – That’s five fights that I don’t want to see. I’ve heard of the great Salvador Sanchez, but the one that will be fighting on this card has a record of 18-3-2. Somehow, that’s a little short of the original great Salvador Sanchez. For that reason, I have no interest in seeing this dude fight.
Alfonso Gomez vs. Jose Luis Castillo – Gomez is ranked #10 in the IBF and WBO, while the 36-year-old Castillo is ranked #7 by the WBC. I have no idea why Castillo is ranked at all in the welterweight division. Castillo, a former lightweight champion, looks out of his league fighting at welterweight. He was totally dominated by welterweight contender Sebastian Andres Lujan in a 10 round decision loss two years ago. Since that time, Castillo has beaten four 2nd tier opponents. I have no interest in seeing him get beaten by Gomez. Besides that, I don’t see either of these guys as potential welterweight champions now or ever. Therefore, why should I want to see them fight?
John Duddy vs. Michael Medina – I’ve seen Duddy fight on numerous occasions, and have always wondered how he gets put on television. He got torn apart by a 2nd tier fighter Walid Smichet in 2008, and recently Duddy was beaten by Billy Lyell. So why is Duddy on the Pacquiao-Clottey fight? That seems like a total waste to me. I don’t want to see this dude fight when I don’t even agree with him being ranked in the top tier. He looks like a 2nd tier fighter to me.
Humberto Soto vs. David Diaz – This is probably going to be as bad a mismatch as the main event. Soto is a great fighter, but Diaz has done almost zero since being destroyed by Pacquiao in a one-sided 9th round stoppage in June 2008. Diaz has fought once since that time, beating an old Jesus Chavez by a 10 round majority decision last year in September. Even if Diaz had stayed active since being destroyed by Pacquiao, he would likely be way over his head in a fight against Soto.

I agree that Paqcuiao could have picked Mosley but besides him and Big Mouth Floyd it is understandable that he picked Clottey since he is ranked 5th after Cotto which he already beat. But to diss the whole undercard is childish. Why wouldn’t you want to see a prospect fight? Because their not famous enough?
Obviously you should not be writing about boxing. We have no interest in your personal negative opinion.
Why? Because we all know that you love Manny. I can tell, so don’t be shy to tell it. The most intriguing part is… You know Manny can excite you and weather you like it or not, that’s the bottom line because Stone Cold Steve Austin said so.
I still have an uneasy feeling Floyd will find a way to get out of this fight. I just think he still will back out in the last minute and make some sort of injury or some sort of clause in their contract.
Floy is now boasting he will make $40 million on this fight…I don’t think so. He is the moron who accused of Mosley not being a PPV attraction and that is the reason why he never took on Mosley beforehand. Now all of sudden, his fight with Mosley now is a monster PPV attraction and he will make $40 million? I swear, did Floyd Sr give Floyd Jr some drugs or something because right now it seems he is losing some brain cells. Maybe he has the beginnings of early onset of dementia. I don’t think Floyd doesn’t realize how often he contradicts himself. When you start to tell a bunch of lies it really shows his insecurity. It really amazes me how the lying comes so easy for him.

The fight with Manny and Clottey won’t be boring, thats a guarantee. And why not? By the fight, invite some friends, have some beer and other alcoholic beverages. Lots of FOOD. And then more food. I’m personally looking forward to the fight because there will lots of great Filipino food. A cold San Miguel Beer, great Filipinos dishes like lumpia, chicken adobo, pancit..and watching Manny fight….its a win…actually ALL WIN!! Get the fight.

i’ll watch the replay on floyd-mosley as it might be as boring as hell. old mosley might be too slow in catching a running floyd. i won’t pay for a running match. those wrestling apologists can say all they want, but wrestling which is mosley’s style is not good enough.

It’s funny how the media hyped all of Manny’s fights. They are the ones that hyped those fights to make them seem competive. Now because Manny won them easy and the media fels stupid now they are going to bash Manny? and claim he only fights mismatches? WTF! this just makes no sense. I’ll still be watching the PPV.
I will buy the pac vs closttey fight but stream the mosley fight. I don’t think the mosley fight will happen because mayweather will come up injured , sick, or some other reason to get out of it.
Mayweather did say that if mayweather-mosley sold far better than pacquiao-clottey (quite probable), then he would demand greater than 50%, which will in turn make the pacquiao-mayweather fight more improbable than it is now. I do believe the money split will be a bit more difficult to haggle with than the blood testing bit, since this time mayweather can have some hard data to back up his claims of getting the bigger split. So I guess one good reason to buy the pacquiao fight is to increase the possibility of the pacquiao-mayweather fight, even for just a little bit. That or you better pray mosley wins against floyd (which is not that probable). Of course, all that isn’t an issue if you don’t want to see pacquiao-mayweather fight in the first place.

I couldn’t care less who is on his under card, boxing is boxing so I’ll watch any and all the fights but it’s the Pacman I pay to see. Gone are the days of Don King’s mouth watering undercards so we just have to accept it.
As for only beating washed up fighters?? Seems they are all washed up AFTER the Pacman has whipped them. Maybe some people should accept that Manny is actually as good as some people think, a true boxing legend and he makes all excellent fighters look bad!! thanks for the props!! i’ve been a boxing fan since the glory days of the heavyweights up until may be the sport of boxing come to a halt. i’m not actually a MMA fan. i think it’s a little more violent. but i think the violence of this sport attracted a lot of fans. even teenagers prefer MMA now over boxing. i can’t blame them.

You speak the truth man, some people may hate to hear it. I’ve been a fan of both boxing and MMA, I still prefer boxing, but I’ve posted it before. Pacquiao is the face of boxing for a reason and the main reason it can make a comeback. If Mayweather won’t fight him for bs reasons you’re hurting the sport. Boxing had a recent rise amidst a recession mainly due to Pacquiao. Most casual fans barely even know of Floyd. That’s why the heavy weight division had it’s run, because of fighters like Tyson, Hollyfield, Ali, Foreman. Boxing in the old days went 15 rounds for a reason, somebody needed to get knocked out.
Not only that MMA doesn’t deal w/the BS that boxing has, the best fight the best.
old style boxing is always go for knock outs. modern day boxing, hit and don’t get hit. i hope those people who really like boxing(die hard fans) stop pretending that you just like the fundamentals.

Same here man. I’ve always watched Cotto’s fights, but I had a lot of respect for the guy after. He took it like a man, and he could have assed out after RD 8, but he kept going like a champ (seriously though, he should have stopped). Mosley/Mayweather may be a “better” fight, but I’ll pay for both, March 13th 23 days and counting. Better match ups don’t dictate more exciting fights.

Typical Manny hater with same old excuses. If you remember, ODLH, Hatton, and Cotto were all supposed to be bigger and were favored to win against Manny. In 24/7, ODLH is on video saying he’s in the best shape of his life and will give Pacquiao a beating. It’s only after he lost that excuses were made. These are professional boxers. They are given plenty of time to train and prepare for the fight. These weren’t last minute substitutes they throw in against Manny. How can there be excuses? Losers make excuses to avoid shame and embarassment. There is no shame in losing if you take it like a man.
Cotto is the only one I respect. He never made excuses. He accepted his defeat gracefully and has always given props to Pacquaio since their fight. I became a Cotto fan after that fight. That’s a true warrior. ODLH and Hatton, on the other hand, are the definition of poor sportsmanship.

After 20 years, we’ll still be talking about how great Pacquiao is, and we’ll be glad that we’ve been able to watch his exciting fights! Younger generations will be asking us about our account of watching Pac’s last fights. I wouldn’t mind paying $50 to watch a great fight because you know it’s going to be exciting with Pacquiao on the ring. He always fight to give back to the fans and we should just appreciate him as long as we can.
Every fight is different, so it’s ridiculous to be making predictions. Clottey is hungry for a victory, and I betcha he’s getting ready like mad. Pacquiao is the best p4p fighter, but…there’s always the expected in a sport like boxing. Who ever thought a Buster Douglas could “Iron” Mike Tyson? So, quit the “mismatch” crap, go see the fight at the Cowboys Stadium, or buy it on PPV. Both fighters should be commended for agreeing to this fight. Pacquiao, for staking his welterweight title on the line; Clottey, for stepping up to the plate. It’s obvious Clottey has more balls than Floydie!
And what’s the point lex? No matter what you say or how much you back up Mayweather, Pacquiao is the Fighter of the Decade and 3x Fighter of the Year. Pacquiao is the #1 P4P hate it or love it. It doesn’t matter who Mayweather beats, if Pacquiao doesn’t lose, and Mayweather doesn’t fight Pacquiao, he’ll always be #2.

Berto hadn’t pulled out when Mayweather started negotations. Plus Roach considered the Mosley-Berto winner. But he had already decided Mosley is too good. And the other great welterweight Williams didn’t have anything scheduled. Manny didn’t choose the best available welterweight, he chose the best that he knew he could beat easily.

This is Pac’s 1st fight at welterweight. Weight drained DLH doesnt count, he was a supermiddle weight who drained himself and Cotto fought at a “catchweight.” So this is Pacs 1st fight at welterweight and he picks a stiff.

This is Pacquiao’s 1st fight against a true welterweight and he fights a stiff in Clottey. Give me a break! This fight and the undercard stinks to high heaven. I will not be buying it. I will watch it FREE the week after on HBO.
Mayweather Mosley, I will buy on PPV. At least there is a legitimate chance that Mayweather could lose this fight. There is nothing even remotely intriguing about Pac-”No Name” Clottey.

Mayweather fight is like, head movement, walking around the ring, a few tap punches, full of hugs and kisses and a brief excitement. Then it gets you waiting for another excitement for several rounds, then a brief one comes and then again the waiting, then you hear the last bell at round 12 and you realize you’ve wasted an hour and 50 bucks for something you don’t want to see again coz you can’t tell the difference between rounds, all are the same and boring. I admire PBF skill, he has the best defense out there but when it comes to delivering entertainment with the money you payed for, he fails a lot, epic.

Did you not know that Pac is the reason why the vegas strip comes to life even in the middle of recession? Pac as well sold out all his last three bouts and that was the middle of the recession. On the other hand , Floyd could not sellout his bout with JMM. He has to give away tickets just to fill some of the empty seats hoping to fool the public that he is a cash cow. if manny knocks clottey out, i will eat crow and think of manny as an all-time great. i won’t make excuses on clottey’s behalf. a knockout victory for manny would be his best victory bar none. but i don’t see that happening. manny has only faced one elite fighter who is defensively oriented. that would be marquez. and in two bouts he never got the best of him. that’s because defensive fighters feed off of manny’s best attribute which is pressure. clottey is gonna surprise many and create wishes for those who didn’t buy the fight immediate regrets.
I’m actually going to the fight….but I would definitely buy this fight if I wasn’t. Boxing fans should buy this fight for the pure intention of making it know that Mayweather is not a cash cow and boxing is fine without him fighting. Three exciting rounds of Manny beating on Clottey are better than last 20 rounds Floyd has fought.

Why wouldn’t you wanna watch Pacquiao, he’s never had a boring fight. Manny is so unpredictable unlike Floyd. Floyd is such a technical fighter that his fights almost become too unpredictable. Floyd never wants to be pressured, and when he is he usually bends over until the referee steps in. The Mosley-Mayweather fight will be a lot of hugging.

Definitely, i’m going to watch the fight (Pacquiao-Clottey). Clottey is a better fighter than Floyd M. Watching Floyd M. is like watching baseball; it’s boring. I don’t consider him an elite fighter. When he fought Marquez, I didn’t even think that the fight was fair because Floyd M. was overweight. Now he’s talking about being fair on the playing field? Who is he kidding? I wasn’t born yesterday. I don’t care what happened to manny’s past; but everybody should moved on and deal about the future. Everybody are different and our body can only do so much, while others can go beyond unimaginable. Just like some people can eat Lizard and some can’t, some people get affected with continues blood draw and others can deal with it. So who are we to tell these fighters on what they can or can’t do. We are not in their position to tell them that. If these people who are making such a big deal, why not step into the ring and face these fighters. These so called “EXPERTS” thinks they’re so intelligent but they’re not. I’m tired reading the same old comments from different writers and it doesn’t really make any sense. I’m a Mayweather fan but I’ve also watched every Pacquao fight on PPV since he fought Barrera in 2003 because of the NON STOP ACTION and a high chance of someone getting knocked out.

Myaweather said himself on a radio interview in Vegas that he once used or was apparently drugged with PCP in one of his fights earlier in his career. Don’t know if that has been investigated. Did anyone hear of that radio segment?
