Pacquiao’s Future? I’m Still Stuck on November 14th

pac5635Tuesday, November 17, 2009 – By Zachary M. Johnson: Even if you are a passionate boxing fan, you are lucky if, once in your life, you see a fight that makes you fall in love with boxing all over again. Three days removed from a record-setting welterweight match-up, my feeling is still the same—we all just witnessed a monumental moment in boxing history.

Last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao didn’t just do his part to inspire pugilism’s weathered fans anew; he shellacked a durable true welterweight in Miguel Cotto and increased his sport’s drawing power for casual and prospective fans across the globe. And now, with a future bout against undefeated slickster Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0-0, 25 KOs), Manny Pacquiao could have the chance to etch yet another indelible mark into his already impressive legacy.

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) has seemingly defied nature while shattering time-tested boxing axioms, bounding through successive weight classes and claiming championship hardware at each stop. Saturday’s fight, Pacquiao’s seventh championship victory in as many weight classes, has garnered praise from all corners of the boxing community and beyond. Bert Sugar, a great boxing historian, has even gone so far as to definitively say that Pacquiao is the sport’s greatest southpaw. Ever.

The subtext to this fight, however, may be the most impressive part. Manny Pacquiao finished the fight with a broken right hand and a ruptured right ear drum. Watching the fight, I never saw any indication that his hand or his ear gave him any problems. While his increasing dominance over the course of the fight was certainly impressive, I find myself equally impressed by his ability to maintain that kind of poker face against a welterweight thumper like Miguel Cotto.

The broken hand is a shame, but the ruptured eardrum is considerably less tragic to those who were in attendance for Pac-Man’s post-fight concert. Fortunately for Manny, though, his legacy won’t be measured by his singing ability. Pacquiao’s physical performance at the MGM Grand on November 14 was a kinetic symphony. Even Beethoven, though, probably wouldn’t have finished performing his Ninth with a broken hand.

  • jhon foreman says:

I don’t hate Pacquiao or Roach but I don’t considered him as a great boxer, because every time he fight, always all in favor on he’s side with the approval of the people behind the close curtain

  • jhon foreman says:

In Roach statement that Cotto have problem of losing weight. First Cotto was defeated by Margarito who has a bricks in his globe, then he fall in Roach trick. Miguel Cotto accepted a catch weight of 145lbs in favor of Pacquio because he want to prove to the boxing world that he could win the fight to a person who gain weight and power, while he is losing and draining, that’s lead him to his most painful defeat in his entire career, But even with his condition Cotto give Pacquiao a good beating, that’s indication that, in his real natural weight Pacquiao will suffer the most worse defeat in his entire career. When Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard fought theirs no catch weight.

  • jhon foreman says:

Welterweight limit are 147lbs and up, now Pacquiao win one of the belt in welterweight in 145lbs catch weight, should the commission will change the weight of welterweight just to accommodate the goose that lay the golden egg in favor of Roach and Pacquiao

  • jhon foreman says:

After winning the belt to Diaz Pacquiao became a mega buck to the media, magazine and etc…. Oscar DeLa Hoya see all of this opportunity, so Dela Hoya made the most interesting match in his carier to challenge Pacquiao that will make a megabuck, but certainly on Pacquiao advantage, and the next is Hatton in Pacquiao advantage also to be sure, the goose that lay a golden egg will keep on producing a golden egg. The last of this victim is Cotto as we all observe. Do you believe that a man who could knock a big guy, could not even shake a small guy even an inch and in the nine round doesn’t know were he is. All of this certainly will not happened without the help of the big guy who really play an important role on this game.

  • jhon foreman says:

I don’t believe Superman or Vampire exist, one thing I do believe, things happened and things that you saw and things that was done behind a close door. There’s so many comment but has no courage to investigate what’s behind to all of it. In my observation and base on the data and collection of medical findings, that when you lose weight in a short period of time, the person is weak and no stamina. In Pacquiao case every time he fight, he out-weight he’s opponent, he experience it himself when he was drained, he lose to a Thailander by way of quiting long time ago I see that fight myself in 1995, I was in the Philippines that time

  • lee h says:

Lets just end all this crap about Mayweather not getting into wars and Pacquiao fighting weight drained oponents. The problem with this site and i can’t believe i’m getting sucked in again Santiago etc the idiots who write on here, If and it is a big if but someone please make it happen Pacquiao v Mayweather whoever wins lets just say they are the best modern day fightet there is cos for different reasons these 2 fighters are what boxing is about both will go down in history if they get it on. All the greatest fighters always had multiple fights against one person, ali v frazier. robinson v la motta. De la hoya v mosely, leonard v duran. need i go on we can’t get a match today never mind a rematch, (Heavyweights) Klitchko’s, Valuev, between them nearly 150 pro fights all heavyweight world champions never fought each other its disheartening, anyway that’s my rant over

  • Edgar Cintron says:

    Let’s go Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dom says:

Handbags McAllister Do you want to see Hatton in a bodybag? Get a grip son!!

  • Handbags McAllister says:

Or else George. Some pundits have mentioned fighting Cedric but I believe the public want the fight with George and it’ll be a guaranteed $50 million.

  • Handbags McAllister says:

Manny need s to fight Hatton in April/May before fighting Mayweather towards end of 2010

  • jhon foreman says:

Every time Pacman fight, on the night of the fight he is always hevier in weight than the other guy. On the night of Pacman vs Cotto, Cotto look like skin and bones, like Roach said Cotto has a problem of loosing weight, so he really loose weight just not to fine one million dollars. On the other side Pacman gaining weight and add more power. Before Pacman fight Cotto he make million of dollars to many companies while Cotto does not, If you are those people who do you like to win, so in other words before the fight begin it was already voted that Pacman will win, for Cotto he bite the bate, loose wait to a catch weight of 145lb instead of 147lb which is the natural weight for welterweight.Even Cotto has no stamina for this fight he last up to the end and still give Pacman a good beating.

  • geo says:

“I did not think manny would beat oscar.I did not think he would beat hatton” You obviously don’t know anything about boxing.1. Oscar was highly overrated from the start. He lost every fight big fight of his career.2. Hatton had a hard pucnh. That’s it.3.Cotto? no comment. Pacquiao’s last real bout was against marquez, and marquez got robbed not once, twice.which is why he never accepted marquez’s challenge.Though pacquaio is a great fighter and i won’t take anything from him.In my eyes, he would be great when he defeats a true champion.

  • ong says:

DMV… another LIAM and PEREZ allies… dont be foolish w/ these guys… ok?

  • M says:

DMV you’re an ar53. If it was fixed do you seriously think Cotto would’ve waited till his face looked like roadkill in the 12th. Fool.

  • jase t(england) says:

I did not think manny would beat oscar.I did not think he would beat hatton.i thought cotto would be too much for manny.i sat down to watch the fight again 2 days later and I felt I was witnessing someone special at work like duran, leonard, wilde, greb. These fighters do not come around too often.cotto can also be very proud of himself.not just as a superb champ(i think the word ‘great’ is used way too often nowadays),but also as a man who carries himself with dignity.p.s nice too see an article on this site which is not trying to bait people with trash talk.
