Four World Titles, One Definitive List of Rankings, Even One Champion … Could it Happen?
By Chris Kelly: There can be no denial of the utter ridiculousness of the current state that boxing is in. With a vast and confusing barrage of boxers claiming to be the best in their respective weight divisions each holding or having at some point held one or more titles each claiming to be the ultimate world title you can see how the main stream and casual boxing fan may find the sport incredibly confusing and why even the most knowledgeable of fans tend to find it frustrating and upsetting all too often.
The result of having this preposterous number of titles and champions has been quite dismal; there is no one recognizable world champion or world title. As a result of this the greatest fighters of the last two decades rarely meet in the ring to become champions because there are a plenty of belts available for everyone. For instance: Why would the young and undefeated WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto risk a showdown with the likes of the dangerous Shane Mosley for the World Boxing Association Championship when all he had to do was overcome the lesser challenge of Juan Urango to become a champion?
Subsequently public interest in boxing has declined and rightly so it would appear. Years ago, when boxing was at it’s most popular; everyone knew who the best fighters were and who the champion was. They got to see the best fighters clash in often-epic battles for the prestige and glory of becoming the World Champion. Long since past have these great days. Would the Ali-Frazier fights or the Robinson-La Motta contests occur had those legends existed today? No. Not as long as the boxing system today makes it nigh impossible.
It seems that the solution to this problem is quite painfully simple. If the four main governing bodies (WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF) conducted their rankings together so that each had the same list of top ten contenders in the world then there would inevitably have to eventually become only one fighter holding all four of these titles in his weight class. What would benefit the sport further is if the big four hired an independent outside organization, such as BoxRec, to conduct theses rankings for them. This would render it easier for the public to see who is the best in each respective weight division and would be harder for fighters who don’t deserve to be in the top ten to get into them.
To use the Welterweight division as an example, all four of the major governing bodies would rank the top ten welterweights in the world as follows:
1. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
2. Shane Mosley
3. Antonio Margarito
4. Miguel Cotto
5. Andre Berto
6. Joshua Clottey
7. Vyacheslav Senchenko
8. Selcuk Aydin
9. Sebastian Lujan
10. Isaac Hlatshwayo (ratings in accordance to BoxRec 6/11/09)
With the WBA holding Mosley as champion, the WBO champion being Cotto, the IBF favouring Hlatshwayo and Berto being the WBC champion, the three fighters would eventually have to meet in a series of unification bouts. This could possibly even take place in a winner-takes-all type tournament similar to the Super Middleweight super-six tournament. This would therefore provide one clear champion over the division whilst also allowing fans to see a series of top class fights. This trend would continue, as with their being only the one champion, the likes of Mayweather and Clottey would have only one possible opponent when challenging for the title.
As for the previously mentioned Titles offered by the smaller governing bodies, I see no reason why they can no longer continue to serve a purpose to boxing. They need not cease to exist hut they cannot continue masquerading as genuine world titles. What these belts do is provide competition for fighters at a lower level and offer a route to graduate into the elite level of the world title challengers. These forms of titles exist in all sports, in the UK as well as Soccer’s premier league there are lower divisions that offer promotion to higher leagues for its winners. The best example of this system in boxing also exists in Europe and the UK. There are area titles such as the North East Title or the Southern Areas Title held by the British Boxing Board of Control. Winners of these titles usually progress onto the BBB of C’s next titles, the English or Celtic Titles before competing for the British Title and eventually the European or Commonwealth titles. These titles all exist as gateways to more widely recognised titles. They do not proclaim themselves to be World Titles and are imperative to the sport. This is how the smaller organizations must brand their titles.
As obvious as this idea may be, its actual occurrence would depend entirely on the governing bodies themselves and the various promoters such as Frank Warren and Bob Arrum of Top Rank. In a perfect world they would see that while they may all stand to make less money on this in the immediate future it will once again bring the about the interest and popularity that boxing has previously experienced. Which in turn can only mean more money for the fat cats that run our sport.

That every 4 years tournment sounds like the best idea yet. 4 titles that’s 2 fights. Every year you can do like 2 division. Divisons close together for possible mega fights. Say for example super middle and light heavy weights with the winners potenailly fighting at a catch weight. This super 6 is great except the fact that it’s not defining. The totalling of points is terrible. Win or go home is what we need. If Vince Young’s longhorns never played Reggie’s Trojans we’d still be saying that Texas could have never beat them in a million tries. We college football got it right once can boxing get it right.
i agree that it would be better for boxing to have only one world champion but it can never happen again lets be honest and acept this fact. i hear alot of talk about the good old days and it seems to me that we glorify the past to mush first off when we think of champions of the past im talking 1900 tru 1950′s boxing was ruled by the usa and world champions in that time for the most part where realy only national champions that is why you could have only one champion in those days. todays boxing is more international in scope there is more competion. and please dont tell me that there is only one champion per division in mma there are several mma organistions each with there own champions. ufc is probaly the most populer in the usa but not the only mma leage.
why is Antonio Margarito ranked so high on your list!? Until he can prove he can beat someone without LOADED GLOVES he should never be mentioned in the top 10! Who knows how many fights he won because of that. It was like he was on steriods U cant give him credit for wins like that! That’s whats killing boxing, people forgetting fighters dirty tactics in the ring. Sorry but Joshua Clottey should be ranked higher than both Miguel Cotto and Andre Berto! Clottey beat the hell out of Cotto in July and Andre Berto doesnt know how to adjust in the ring when he’s fighting.
imo jmm beat pacman TWICE…yes jmm got knocked down but he easily out boxed pac the rest of the fight ….2nd fight was close but i still give it to jmm….just my opn.
stop blocking me please
stop bloking me
totally agree. There are far too many titles in boxing it’s rediculous. There a WBC intercontinetal title?! that defeats the point of having a World Boxing Council
This box rec list is a joke that’s why it won work
mayweather is #1 because he has the skills and record to back it up !! jmm was at the top of most peoples lists for p4p…with boxing the way it is today most only fight once a year..it is impossible to fight every one…everyone says pacman is best ..what would you say if eric morales out boxed mayweather ?? thats what i thought !!!
floyd the no 1 boxer , how come ! he only fight for the money , he is a boring fighter , he chose to fight where he can dominate, just to finish the fight and ran again, A great fighter fight great fighter , he let the fans thrilled!!! that is boxing not running!!!!!
arroyo grande bob, deleting some of the jr divisions and super divisions for that matter seems like a great idea to me !
Martin, if you’ll notice I was the person who left that comment, read the names ! Also I didn’t compile this list it was taken from BoxRec as an example. Mr Rich you’re idea definitley sounds like it could work too.
why is Margacheato on that list?
Good list Chris

floyd is no 1 welterweight? who among those list did he ever fight? no one!!!!!!!!! then how can he be no. 1?
Like your idea Mr Rich
lets go a step further and eliminate a few of the junior divisions.
My idea, would be like a boxing olympics but for professionals. The champions from each of the 4 main belts would meet in a tournament held every 4 years… the winner of the tournament becomes undisputed champ. During the 4 years between the tournaments the undisputed champ can defend any of the 4 belts that he holds so there may be more than 1 champion in between tournaments but then every 4 years the tournament will find an undisputed champion again. Does that make sense?
Undisputed Champion Of The World–It does have a nice ring to it. Sadly due to the greed of the promoters and the alphabet organizations title unification bouts have almost become a thing of the past. Feeding their greed seems to be their number one objective. The “selective matchmaking” and bad decisions are turning a once proud sport into only a shell of what it once was. As long as they can continue to line their pockets nothing is going to change. Anyone that thinks that boxing is alive an well in the States is only fooling their self.
Good points made and this is why UFC is progressing well , the best have to fight the best , one champion per weight not 4 or 5 who spend all their time avoiding each other because promoters not governing bodies run the sport , sad state of affairs when non title catch weight matches become the biggest fight .Championship boxing must change or die a slow painful death
Never going to happen one champion, money talks the loudest in boxing. People like Mayweather can come and go as they want avoiding top ten fighters and walk in to a title fight.
Need to go back in the days when you had to beat someone in the top ten to earn a title fight.Starting from that you might have a chance.
very good point the boxing world needs to be tidyed up and champs will hav to stop avoidin eachother
