Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Miguel Will Burst the Manny Mystique

pac2247By Manuel Perez: Manny Pacquiao has been largely lionized in the past year by the boxing public since beating Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. It’s sad that boxing fans have been so gullible as to be influenced by two pretty much empty wins as these when crowing Pacquiao as the top fighter in the sport. It’s actually sad when you think about it because it shows that fans don’t really have a great knowledge about the sport and can’t put wins in perspective.

Miguel Cotto is a great fighter, certainly better than De La Hoya and Hatton at this stage in my view. Maybe Hatton and De La Hoya were equally as good fighters at one point in their careers, but not by the time that they got to Pacquiao. Few boxing experts would agree that Hatton and De La Hoya had seen better days by the time that they fought Pacquiao.

So the fighters that Pacquiao faced were played out and vulnerable to getting beaten. And to a certain extent the same thing applies to Cotto, although he still has a lot despite his horrible 11th round stoppage loss to Antonio Margarito last year. Okay, so once we recognize that boxing fans have made the miscalculation of seeing Pacquiao as the top dog in the sport based on his empty wins over De La Hoya and Hatton, we must look at how good Pacquiao really is as a fighter.

The answer to that question, perhaps, can be answered by looking at Pacquiao’s “win” last year over Juan Manuel Marquez. In that fight, Pacquiao was out-boxed in eight of the twelve rounds by Marquez, yet the judges scored the fight for Pacquiao by a 12 round split decision.

I saw the fight five times in a row, okay, and I’m telling you that Marquez should have won that fight, period. I can take the fact that the judges saw it differently, while a massive amount of boxing experts like myself saw it as a Marquez win, but it tells you how good Pacquiao really is.

It doesn’t really matter who won the fight. What matters is that Pacquiao struggled badly against Marquez and won a controversial 12 round split decision. That much we can agree on. Marquez was Pacquiao’s last good opponent. I’m not taking anything away from Hatton or De La Hoya because they were great fighters in their day, but clearly not the same fighters by the time they fought Pacquiao.

But, really, Marquez is the last good fighter that Pacquiao fought and he looked horrible against Marquez. Since Pacquiao had a tough fight against Marquez, that you have to assume is about how good Pacquiao is a as a fighter. You can’t use De La Hoya or Hatton as a measuring sticking because they both looked like condemned fighters as they entered the ring against Pacquiao and didn’t look at all good.

Who besides Marquez can you use in recent history to judge how good Pacquiao is? David Diaz? How about a faded Marco Antonio Barrera? Other than Marquez, you really have to go back years to where Pacquiao fought Erik Morales in their first fight before you see Pacquiao fighting a live body who wasn’t faded, weight drained or just plain not that good.

Okay, so now we bring in Miguel Cotto, who I admit is still probably a little shaken from his beat down from Margarito last year, and put him in with Pacquiao. Say what you want about Cotto’s defensive skills, he’s a great offensive fighter and can punch like few others in the welterweight division. So you put Pacquiao in with Cotto and what do you expect will happen? The answer is in how Pacquiao fought against Marquez. Pacquiao is going to struggle and struggle big time against Cotto and end up taking a beating on November 14th. That’s just the way it is.

it is now DEC 8th 2009, AND COTTO GOT BEAT UP! HAHAHAH ALL YOU PAC HATERS. TRUTH HURTS!

  • chippy says:

hahaha, perez! what, what, what? What is your excuse now, big-time loser?

  • NANING says:

You keep on rehashing the same old story, just a minor variation here and there. Is your website running out of writers?

You need something to stimulate your brain in the morning. How about a quart of fresh, resreshing urine from Juan Manuel Marquez?

  • Packard says:

Pacquiao perhaps is pondering with regret for his lost time in training.

He spent too much for C-rate movie and making political posturing.

With two back-to-back disastrous typhoons inundating Pac’s morning jog ground, he had no other choice than to swim like a goldfish in an aquarium.

Cotto is obviously laughing with joy now that he has obvious advantage on training preparation.

that was a tough one to read B4REAL, but I get what you’re saying. as for me I will bet the way of the warrior. if I lose, I bet it’s still going to be a good fight.

  • b4real says:

i was 3 years old and i remember crying when douglas knock out mike tyson and i remember he criend to not bc mike lose maybe that too but it was he beat 200 bucks on douglas every so often here in vegas you take the dog i want pac to win can he when yes will he i dont know but i will say this cotto is no bum fighters and that night my day showed me never beat with my heart so go ahead and beat 1.85 to win a dollar against a guy who is bigger strong and with the whole world against him as for me now thank i would rather bet the one guy that gonna pay me 1.90 to every dollar im pullin for pac but i beat with my wallet bc nothing for sure and for you guys who say pac can get knock out the all do even my idol floyd is one day if he stick around long enough

  • brunner says:

    i mean guts not gots

  • brunner says:

cotto is a good fighter but not a special one who beat a few good boxers and lost to a simple bigger one who dont have remarkable talent in margarito. his previous wins are not convincing. he fights in his comfort zone unlike pac who had the gots to fight in uncharted zones and won in astonishing fashion inspite of the odds stacked against him. by trying that alone must earn him praises whatever the outcome of his fights much more that he won by ko’s. if ever his opponents lost for whatever reasons, pacman should not get the blame because he fought like a true fighter. he has a unique style and speed that brought him to where he is today. of course he is still human and will lose again someday but the fact is he gives us spectacular fights unlike boring fights.i’ve seen a lot of talents and i have to admit that he is one of the best and a special one coz inspite of his 3 losses he grew a better boxer. he learned from his defeats unlike cotto who is said to still psychologically affected by his loss to margarito.i wonder how floyd will respond to a broken nose or a bloodied eye, much more to a loss? we all know how pacman dealt with that and that itself is a sign of greatness, all of them boxers are also sons of god and we must treat them as brothers. if you hate them. why not try putting your feet on their shoes and maybe better understand them. no need for unsavory words.we all love the sports and that include perez and santiago, so please dont call them IDIOTS

  • pisTOLPete says:

    COTTO (W) Pac(L)

  • mr boyle says:

cotto is a very good boxer but he is going to be a sitting target for pacqiuao. under the guidance off freddy roach pacman will find all of cotto’s flaws and take him out between round 5 and round 8.

  • joneePinoy says:

EMPTY WINS? YAH RIGHT!!! That’s a really prejudiced way of describing Pacman’s wins. Let me just remind you of HOW he (Pacman) won – a TKO vs ODH and a HELL of a KO on the 2nd round vs “The Hitman”. If the fight went the distance, I might be telling a different story. But it didn’t. Pacman KO both fighters in high fashion.

By the way, make up your mind regarding Cotto’s condition. Don’t give me uncertain words like “Cotto might be shaken or shot”. Coz I don’t want another excuse from you once Pacman beats the crap out of Cotto come fight night. That’s history already made right there.

  • Hugh says:

I always read the opinions of everyone on this site. I have not yet read anything about the punching power of pacman. He is not the same fighter who fought Marquez, for one thing he counterpunches much better and his speed is much faster. I love and respect both fighters, But I see too much speed & counterpunching for Cotto to contend with………Pacquiao by split decision…. Any bets ???

  • leo says:

you dont know what you are saying yor article is biased and full of excuses regarding to Pacquaio.. always the end that justifies the means… END Result is more important rather than your speculations!!! Pacquaio is the number ONE!!!

  • sean chicago says:

to TOMMY and GUNZZNBUTTA, kudos to the both of you, but i can only stake my yacht in this fight, for this may prove to be a hard fight for both. anything can happen thats why they fight the fights. otherwise foreman and ali would never have happend.
and GUNZZNBUTTA sounds like a clan member from RAINBOW SIX 3. can you confirm?

  • Derrick says:

I don’t think you’ve taken into account how vastly Pacquiao has improved even since the time of that controversial win over Marquez.

I say Pacquiao wins TKO due to severe condition of Cotto’s face in the 10th.

  • tommy says:

63 comments so far.good work. You should get a job with PPV.

  • abraham says:

Hey Perez think about this for a moment…When Pacquiao fought dela hoya almost everybody thought DLH will trounce pacquiao bigtime..others would even make fun of the bout. it was giant vs dwarf. including you..hehehe but DLH quit. When Pacman fought Hatton, he fought hatton in junior middleweight which is Hatton’s comfort zone. Actually, nobody has beaten Hatoon in 140 pound weight until pacquiao demolished him in just measly 2 rounds. How can you say then that Hatton’s not in best shape. Hehehe. i found your analysis funny. Bozo! hehehehe!

  • manuela scrutum abnoy says:

perez if you have a balls , but i think none, ovaries Yes, Fight mama dionisia , i think in one round you will be smack down.

  • JDima says:

Rofl perez you are hilarious I remember you said almost the same thing about Hatton and Dela-Hoya before the fought PAC.

  • josh says:

this is nothing but the truth

  • furious says:

IF COTTO WILL LOSE WHAT WOULD MR. PEREZ SAY, THAT COTTO IS NOT THE SAME FIGHTER, SO MANY EXCUSES. BUT NACHO ADMITTED THAT PACQUIAO IS HARD TO BEAT BY ANY FIGHTER, IT’S THE PROOF THAT MARQUEZ NOT WIN EITHER 1 OF THERE 2 FIGHTS, NACHO KNOWS MR. PEREZ DIDN’T KNOW IT. SO PLEASE SHUT UP. F*** YOU!…

  • gunzznbutta says:

thank u kell!!!!!! u kno wut u talkin bout!!!!!

  • kelly says:

There is a fly in the ointment of Pacman.
Mayweather won an easy decision over the much smaller Marquez. Thats the same Marquez who most feel defeated Pacman tiwce. That makes Pacman and Marquez about equal. So, how in the hell would either Marquez or Pacman stand up to a Cotto who is really comparable in size and skill to Mayeather?

  • gunzznbutta says:

i love 2 watch da pacman, but i dont think he can take any of those clean shots that cotto was layin on the cheater margarito b4 he was stopped by loaded wraps. cotto is bigger and stronger, not that slow either. the pacman bit off more than he can chew, and mr chicago, i would like to put my 20million dollar estate up!!!!!!

  • mr mango says:

Hey Manueala… SAME OLD CRAP YOU’RE SPEWING ALL OVER. try to come up with something new. Tired of your s**t.

  • what people dont realize is this.
    Manuel Perez IS Perez Hilton!
You have no credibility. Stick to hating on movie stars.

  • trueboxingfan says:

all you haters of pac will eat your words and im sorry your prediction is for nubs and no credibility and really no knowledge of boxing. just watch Nov 14 and shut up because your mouth will be in awe when your prediction becomes a nightmare! Watch and learn nubs!

  • rom b says:

You should shut up and give up your job, I just know nothing.Unfortunately you yourself are at the end of your life. Consider yourself useless to the sport of boxing Manuel Perez. I am pretty sure you are writing this because you are a Puertorican yourself. Just think about Manny will always be the best oponent for anybody. You will just eat your word after the fight, believe me and people are just going to look at you and laugh.

  • Yopej says:

Why do you people always look at the way fighthers were when they fought Manny??? DUDE!!! This is BOXING!!! You’re given all the time in the world to prepare for a FIGHT! You dont make excuses when you get beat! Just take Oscar for example! He didnt say that he lost because of his weight issues! He said he lost because “Manny is a Great Fighter!” And thats a FACT! Dont just look on how bad Manny performed on his past fights, but look on how much he improved and by doing so performing great in his RECENT! Do you get the point?? Not so many fighters can do that! Not so many fighters can improve everytime he has a fight! As a matter of fact Manny is still a work in progress! and YOU WILL SEE IT in NOV 14! PEACE :)

  • Rey says:

Come fight night watch the right hook to the body. Pacquiao by KO 5th round. Watch it.

  • kelly says:

Manuel Perez has got it right.
all of the other guys in this forum are wrong.

Plain and simple, Cotto will defeat Pacquaio.

  • joseph says:

if pacquiao had lost to de la hoya everybody may say that Pacqiao is being abused, against hatton everybody says that pacquiao will lose but he won again, every body says that cotto is stronger and bigger than pacquiao, but if pacquiao will win over cotto and if he keeps winning against bigger and better opponents then i may say that he is over dosed with a special balot.

  • tommy says:

Sean Chicago.I dont need writers to tell me who is going to win a fight, and I see your point of view on the speed issue but since the odds are 2-1. I will bet my imaginary $1,000,000 California beach house against your imaginary $2,000,000 Michigan avenue apartment.Manny is a much more exciting fighter to watch, and I hope that he is around for a long time but…. 2-1 is 2-1.Cotto in ten.

  • tommy says:

Manny was exciting long before the DelaHoya fight. This all started the night he dismantled Barrera. It became clear that we were in store for great things after he avenged his loss to Morales, but that first fight Eric showed how vulnerable PacMan is when he pulls straight back.Marquez has done the same thing in their two fights.Cotto is alot longer and stronger.Getting in is going to be alot harder than getting out,and I dont feel as though Manny has the strength to hurt Miguel.Cotto in ten.

  • Nasu says:

….”Nasu,You really think that Pac is going to KO Cotto? then you don’t know anything about boxing”….

Actually, I should have said he will stop Cotto. I’m not predicting a one punch knockout, more like a sustained target finding mission, similar to de la hoya.

Also, the person who thinks Cotto will simply walk through Pacquiao’s punches and finish the little fella in the 10th, is seriously mistaken if he thinks any fighter will eat pacman’s shots for ten rounds and be in a fit state to do anything. Really poor analysis that is.

Also, I learned to stop making comparisons or judgments as to what will happen in a boxing match based on what has happened in other fights, a long time ago. Styles make fights, as they say. Cotto beat Mosely, Mosely battered Margarito, Margarito walked through Cotto, therefore a fight between Cotto and Mosely should have only one outcome right? Like many examples similar to this one, this is proven to be a poor way to judge a fight.

I think Cotto would beat Mosely again. I also think Margarito would beat Cotto again. Figure that out.

Margarito wore Cotto down. Cotto lost that fight mentally as much as anything, as did Cintron before him. Antonio was able to grind Cotto down eventually, but I will tell you this, Margarito did not land as many hurtful, accurate, sharp punches in that fight, as Manny will in 5 rounds. If Cotto tags Manny with a big shot, it becomes a different story, but if Cotto gets tagged by those stinging shots time after time, which i can’t see him avioding, then he will not stay around for very long.

I think Pacquiao can finish this fight before the 10th round. I am predicting a 9th round stoppage for Manny Pacquiao. I think Cotto will be harder to hit than Hatton and De La Hoya by a decent bit, but not enough to make a difference to the outcome.

  • guest says:

if you can’t even accept the fact that manny won that fight, you don’t deserve to be called a boxing expert. your fave boxer lost, just move on dude!

  • sean chicago says:

i can understand why pacquiao fans come to this site. but you cotto fans should stay away. perez is a robot made to atract attention to the site.
wich i understand, but the cotto fans are getting false information.
i can imaging a few cotto fans going broke on a bet because of the false information this guy is feeding them. don’t think this guy is an expert. and for god sakes stay away.

  • Right Hook Roll Under says:

Im taking a dump and reading your article… Shall I continue about your judgement and opinion? Oh there it goes let me wipe my bum…there you go..thats what I think about your writing. Enjoy!

  • sean chicago says:

all you cotto fans are idiots and blind at the same time. I love cotto, but you guys are making a fool of yourselfs. cotto is not that big. he’s a big puncher yes, but not that big. look at pacquiao’s record, he’s made a living fighting bigger guys. this is not going to be any different. IF YOU DISAGREE, THEN PUT THE HOUSE ON
IT. IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY LOST IT ON De La Hoya.
___this guys has been going up to fight the best guys at all weights except for lightweight. and i can understand why. the weight was in shambles. there was nobody worth risking the de la hoya fight. but you have to admit this guy is the only one fighting bigger and bigger opponents.____
bet your saving on it if you believe perez.

  • Sam says:

I was tired of reading Perez’s Pac hating 12 months ago! Now it’s just ridiculous.

I am a Cotto fan, but I like to call myself impartial! unlike Perez!

Cotto could & will cause Pac all manner of problems, but Pac will win this fight, he’s just too fast. As mentioned, speed kills, & wins for that manner, especially at elite level boxing.

Mayweather beats Pac & every other guy up to 147 for that matter,.

And Williams ain’t fought at 147 for 4 fights and Mayweather started at 126 so that fight aint gonna happen in a million years.

  • Vic says:

Saw the writer & i stopd reading.

  • pushbot says:

Manuel Perez: If you’re professional enough you should know how to accept if not give credit other’s opinion you cant stone them with your ideas and point of view that’s yours not for them and not for me. The judges saw in professional point of view is worthy of pac getting the win. You can shout and tell the world about your suggestion about the fight pacvsmarquez2 but u don’t have the right to discredit and decision! Grow up! Be professional. You score the fight for marquez I score the fight for pac and how many others with contrast suggestion who should win the fight. Learning is never ending process man! Pac before is different how he fight he keeps getting better even the trainer of marquez acknowledge that he used two different fighters again pac and according to him pac is really good. Man be mature and be professional he fought with barrera, morales, marques, and many more… is a learning process he might be beaten by cotto maybe but you cannot discredit his skills. Nothing to say.. just grow up!

  • Reflex says:

Nasu,You really think that Pac is going to KO Cotto? then you don’t know anything about boxing Cotto is a very if not the best boxer in the WW he will adapt to pac’s speed since Cotto is also a fast boxer But I know that Cotto does have what Pac don’t and is the Power to knock him (Pac)out.
Margarito is way bigger and stronger than Manny and with some help still couldn’t knock Miguel out. So that should help you on the pac knocking Cotto question.

  • cotto fan says:

Nasu Pacquiao fights very well coming forward not backwards. Cotto will eat Pacs shots and eventually catch up and time pacman knocking him out in 10. Pacman starts of fast but gets figured out and ko’d Be honest to yourself it took Margarito loaded wraps to systematically beat Cotto up how can you even think Pac could do the same.

  • Perry pc says:

    Manuel Perez,
It is not an empty win since Pacquiao destroyed the wo guys but it may have been for the two guys if you yourself fought them.

  • cotto fan says:

Pac-Man the alarm sounded weeks ago wake up!!!

  • Officer Ricky says:

well said Perez! Cotto is definitly gonna Knock him out with a body shot!!!

  • hawk says:

A ‘boxing expert’- ha course you are!!

  • PACP4P says:

hey DORK perez lay off PAC. his country is flooded, he’s helping feed thousands of people, and witnessed hundreds of his countrymen die.

i know it’s your wierd hobby to always put down a humble, generous, people’s champion like PAC, but…

    THIS IS NOT THE TIME.

  • cotto fan says:

paul you and all pac fans are in for a world of pain come nov. 14

  • cotto fan says:

win win for BoB arum! The idea from the beginning is for Cotto to beat pac and become Top ranks numero uno since pac was retiring anyways hence the 2 year extension for cotto to stay with Uncle Bob.

  • Paul Mason says:

Perez, you need to shut your mouth. we will see on nov 14th who is the king and believe me you will have such a battering on this site when cotto gets beat

  • cotto fan says:

cotto will ko the pacman in 10 rounds all this hype is simple to hide true facts and the inevitable. Come Nov. 14 Cotto will win in a dramatic fashion. There is no way pac can outbox Cotto like he plans too its just not his style.
