The Key to Victory: Cotto Needs to Rough Pacquiao Up

By Manuel Perez: If Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KO’s) wants to beat Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KO’s) on November 14th, he’s going to have to make a point to rough Pacquiao up early and often and make it tough for the smaller fighter. Pacquiao will come in at pretty much the same weight as Cotto at the weigh-in, but by the time the fight takes place, you can expect that Cotto will have a 10 to 15 pound weight advantage over Pacquiao.
It’s boxing and the whole sport is filled with fighters trying to get over on each other in some way or another, whether it is fights being held at catch weights or fighters trying to wrestle on the inside. The point is Cotto needs to take advantage of his own assets in this fight.
Pacquiao will have the advantage of the catch weight, which will probably leave Cotto weaker than he usually is. Besides that, Pacquiao will also have the advantage in hand speed and mobility. But what Cotto has in the experience of having faced bigger punchers than Pacquiao and will likely be able to take Pacquiao’s shots without being hurt by them.
This should allow Cotto to take more chances than a smaller fighter like Ricky Hatton or a badly weight drained one such as Oscar De La Hoya. So for Cotto to take full advantage of all the things that he has going for him, he needs to use his size by being rough as he can to show the smaller Pacquiao what happens when he fights a bigger fighter that’s not old and weight drained like De La Hoya.
People are best at remembering things when there’s pain involved. That’s a fact of life. Unless you straighten someone out when they’re doing something wrong, the action tends to continue. This is why Cotto needs to teach Pacquiao that he can’t come rushing him like he does against his other opponents.
From there, Cotto can easily manage Pacquiao by beating him down with his jab and right hand. Cotto should be able to keep the shorter Pacquiao at the end of his jab without getting hit because Pacquiao’s reach is short and limited.
Once Pacquiao gets in close, that’s where Cotto needs to make him pay by turning it physical and putting Pacquiao off his game. It won’t be hard because Pacquiao won’t have the size or the experience against a similarly talented fighter. Pacquiao has built up his reputation as of late by beating Hatton and De La Hoya, and I see both wins as totally overrated and without value.

Pac could not and I write again could not KO ODLH who was a sitting duck must of land like a hundred shots and could NOT KO him, after a couple to the ribs from Cotto Pac will lose some of his speed Then Cotto will neutralize his crazy wild shots and there go’s the King I like Pac but I’m honest to my self no need to be bias. To Manuel Perez, Cotto is a great boxer he has no need to fight dirty he will stop his crazy boxing style will boxing skills. Even though I know what you mean, that he will get away with it because of the way Pac fights but Cotto wouldn’t consider that a win him self.
Perez Manny & Cotto are about the same height & reach Cotto is just a naturally heavier set man. There will be no reach advantage lol. As far as the dirty tactics go Cotto isn’t & won’t unless hes provoked even then I don’t see it being intentional. The Judah fight got a little excessive & the the ZClottey fight he was trying to push off because he was being held but it was unintentional. Why wouldn’t he want Manny to lung in like a “wild man”. If Manny does lung in off balance or not & catches Cotto’s straight jab he going down quicker & harder Clottey did who was never knocked down before he met Cotto. The wilder the better but Cotto has to cut off the ring pick his shots to the body & slow / hurt Manny asap to gain some respect from the brave Phillipino.

Cotto trains and shows decent speed. But still not nearly as fast as Pacquiao. What is scary is that he will not have the same speed in the ring when he puts on 15 pounds. Pacquiao is lightning fast and packs KO power in either hand. If Cotto is stronger than Diaz, Hatton, and Dela Hoya, it can’t be by much. This fight is going the same route as the others. Cotto will be the receiving end of too many powerful punches. If he doesn’t get KO’d early, I’m afraid for him- he can get brain damage.
Manuel Perez and Marquez are still bitter about their 2 loses against Pacman.

I think there is TOOOOOO much hype surrounding pac man now im not saying hes not a great fighter because he is but when you talk about ponnd4pound its about fighting people at there weights not catch weights all the time witch he seems to be doing of late? Now granted pac man has done great for the sport but maybe hes let a couple of fights go to his head and thinks he can swing it out with a bigger stronger man in Cotto?
Lets not forget what really happened with him and Marquez, he got beat…
Marquez is another great fighter in my oppinuin BETTER than pac man but he to is fighting a losing battle with floyd who i dont like but respect as a fighter to some extent??
I think Cotto will beat pac and folyd will beat Marquez, then this will hopefully lead to a fight betwen to great fighters in Cotto and floyd, but i dont know if floyd will risk this fight because he himself likes to pick on the little ones as of late, Cotto would beat floyd and show the world he is number 1……
We have to remember if you have 2 fighters of the same calaba but one is bigger then nine times out of ten the bigger man will win, i would love to se Marquez beat floyd and pac to beat Cotto but just dont think it possible for either to do??

This fight will be more tactical than people think. Pacquiao wil at times try and trade but mostly we will see the pacquiao of the first few rounds with De La Hoya when he used combinations and then pivoted his feet to a complete half circle around De La Hoya. However, Cotto is smart and an underated boxer. When Pacquiao circles around him you will not see him following Pacquiao but backpedaling and altering the angles in his favor. Ring generalship will be the key to this fight, not power or speed. Who controls the ring will win this fight. Mark my words. This fight is going to go the distance.
Roach says he hopes Cotto will cut, as a result of legitimate Manny punches and you write an article slating him. You said how this was a disgrace and if he could not win without cuts you would not consider it a win.
Now you think Cotto should head-butt or low blow a fellow professional, risking permanent damage to reproductive organs and head trauma? Not to mention disqualification from the bout and a tarnished reputation.
How can you hold both of these views?
Pac is fast, accurate an has power, but i’ll be surprised if he KOs cotto. he can win on points. cotto has taken punishment from guys that hit harder than pac ever will, if someone thinks pac can hit harder than mosley, margarito, and other natural welters then you are just a pac fan and know nothing about boxing.
Its true that a boxer is as good as his last fight, thats why Pac is such a huge favorite. Pac has looked amazing against Hatton and oscar, while cotto looked bad against Clottey and Margarito.
BUT!! its a little diferent here, ..cotto is only vulnerable against power and strenght(like clottey and marg) BIG, STRONG guys, taller and heavier than him, with granite chins that can handle his power and force him to back up.
On the other hand he fights very good against faster, smaller oponents like judah, mallinagi and he even handled mosley (which Pac evades)so using the Clottey an Marg. fights to predict how the fight will go is a mistake.
I do think cotto can hurt and stop Pac, but he has to stay active and agressive, jabbing and countering when Pac jumps in, fighting like the bigger man. Thats when he shines and i think thats the way he’ll fight Pac. If hes gets lazy, tired or cut then he’s toast.
My odds are even on this one, anyone can win, thats why i dont understand the one sided betting for Pac. People think hes invincible. Reminds me of tyson, pavlic, trinidad, oscar, jones jr and other invincibles that got their wake up call.

You say that you’d never want Cotto to resort to illegal actions in the ring, but it sounds to me that you’re really hoping for it. If you have Cotto as a favorite to win, you sure have a funny way of showing it. You as much as said that Cotto cannot beat him without using illegal blows. & as far as Pacquiao being wild, I have to disagree. His attacks are very agressive, but not wild at all. He knows exactly what he’s doing when he presses an attack & is extremely accurate to prove it. Honestly, you should watch his past fights & actually pay attention to them before you go making rediculous comments like this.
I wonder what made Manuel Perez so angry to anybody who is Pinoy! He cannot write anything objectively and without bias. Miguel Cotto no doubt is one of the best welterweights so he doesn’t need dirty tactics to ensure victory against Pacquiao. But i do believe that Pacquiao has equal chances of besting Cotto using his superior speed and knock-out power. Lets just wait come November 14.
I agree with you Mr. Perez this time. The only way Cotto can win are the following (provided);
1) be 10 to 15 lbs bigger than Pacquiao but avoid being hit to the head because extra weight will not protect head punch which \Pacquiao is very accurate and strong.
2) do some dirty tactics to intimdate old Pacquiao but unfortunately new Pacquiao is just very smart and keeps distance.
3) the added weight gain favoring Cotto will just make him very slow (but powerful) unfortunately the outcome will be like Paquiao fighting Diaz (being very slow).
4) and now body punch from cotto will not reach Pacquiao because nowhere cotto can find Pacquiao. Since you mentioned pacquiao dont have a longer reach but i tell you when he throws his left it is not the usual left punch other fighters are used to bu Pacquiao left is so different he throws hist left strainght and with too much power coming from the hip.
Sorry Perez the extra weight is not enough and also the dirty tactis will not matter unless he brings a gun in the ring that i agree Pacquiao will be defeated.

Perez you should respect pacmans achievements in the ring! That being said i think cotto wins this on nov 7th. However if pacman proves me wrong again i shall give him full credit for beating one of if not the best welterweight in the division. If manny beat hatton (the best light-welter) and cotto (the best welter???) there is no way you can deny his greatness.

Throw some elbows, hits below the belt and head butts…that’s according to him the only way Cotto can win against Manny…suddenly he is admitting that Cotto will come pretty much heavier than Manny..10-15 lbs and yet he still feels that this will not be enough for Cotto and he is now suggesting to Cotto to do whatever it takes to win against Manny..he now realizes that Cotto stands no chance against Manny in a fair fight!

Good article I agree if cotto can maximise hes advantages he could turn it into easy fight. The obvious concern will be pacquios hand speed which I think cotto can adapt to like he did with Zab Judha and Shane Mosely. Remember once marquez got through that first round against manny in there first fight he adjusted to hes style and made manny look a pretty ordinary. I also feel manny is vaunerable to the body and cottos body attack is one of the best out there he can mix it up to body and head. So I see cotto ending it probaly in the middle rounds with a lethal body attack.
