Hopkins sees Marquez as Fearless

marquez453434By Dave Lahr: Light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins was impressed with Juan Manuel Marquez after seeing HBO’s Mayweather-Marquez episode 2, saying to Boxing Talk “I just watched a Real Mexican [Marquez], who is soon to be a Mexican living legend drink his own urine.

Anybody who drinks his own urine isn’t scared of nothing on two legs.” Hopkins, of course, was referring to the part of episode II in which Marquez drank a glass of his own urine, remarking that this was a way to keep his vitamins from being lost through urination.

Since the episode aired last Saturday night, it’s created somewhat of an uproar in the boxing community with many of the fans repulsed by what Marquez appeared to do. Some of Marquez’s biggest boxing fans were quick to suggest that he didn’t drink real urine, that it was really apple juice that he was drinking. They say that Marquez was trying to get a mental edge over Mayweather by showing what lengths he is willing to go to beat him. It’s hard to say what the truth is in this, but Marquez sure seems to have fooled a lot of people by this move.

If this was real urine, it shows how determined that Marquez is to win the fight. A person that is willing to drink their own urine is someone that you need to be careful of because the way that Marquez carries himself, he looks like he’s ready to die in the ring on September 19th rather than lie down and let himself be beaten by Mayweather. Marquez brings a certain toughness that has been missing with Mayweather’s past opponents.

This is a fighter that may take Mayweather to a place that he hasn’t been before and turn this fight into a grueling war. Mayweather hasn’t had grind out any of his wins in his career because he’s been so much better than his opponents. If he doesn’t have the heart, it will show on the 19th, because Marquez looks like he’s ready to go to the end of the earth to get the win.

The question is, will Mayweather be willing to go to the lengths that Marquez is in this fight. Drinking one’s own urine may seem strange and a bit disgusting, but when you look at what’s behind that, you see a fighter that is willing to do anything to win the fight.

This isn’t a fight that can be won with pot shotting, and unless Mayweather can stand up to the punishment that Marquez will be dishing out, we may see Mayweather receive his first defeat of his career. Marquez is willing to sacrifice all in this fight.

Can Mayweather say the same thing? I have my doubts about that. Mayweather hasn’t had to in the past, and he’ll have to show a completely new side of his game if he’s to get the win over Marquez. Mayweather likes to see himself as a pretty boy, but what will be do when his face starts getting hit hard and cuts open up, and perhaps his nose broken? Will Mayweather continue to fight hard or will be quit?
