Calzaghe Sees Taylor Beating Froch – News

cal6734824By William Mackay: Boy, when it rains it pours for WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (24-0, 19 KOs). Just last week, Froch learned that the British television networks decided not to show his April 25th title defense against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs), but now Joe Calzaghe has come down on the side of Taylor and is predicting that Jermain will win if both fighters are “at their best.”

That’s got to hurt Froch, who has wanted to get a fight with Calzaghe for quite some time.

One has to wonder whether Calzaghe was saying this just so that he could strike another dagger into the heart of Froch just when he’s at his weakest point due to the television blackout. Froch has been less than happy with Calzaghe the past two months after Calzaghe retired without giving him a shot at beating him.

This hasn’t been lost on Calzaghe, who has wondered why Froch keeps talking about him now that he’s retired from boxing. Calzaghe feels that Froch should try to go out and make a name for himself on his own rather than trying to rely on getting a fight with him in order to try and make a quick name.

I doubt that Calzaghe would pick Taylor just to get back at Froch, because he’s never been one to get into tit for tat type games with fellow boxers in the past.

Calzaghe feels that Froch’s win over Jean Pascal perhaps wasn’t as important as it seems on the surface, because Calzaghe isn’t entirely sure that Pascal is truly a world class fighter, says Calzaghe in the South Wales Argus.

The victory over Pascal, a narrow 12-round decision in December 2008, was the biggest win of Froch’s career by far and the one that put his name on the map for many American’s and Canadian fans. Calzaghe, though, doesn’t see the win as all that special and isn’t ready to crown Froch just yet after that performance.

Besides Froch, Calzaghe also isn’t impressed with Taylor and wonders about whether he has the heart to beat a fighter like Froch. Joe gives Froch credit in that department, saying that Froch has a lot of heart and a good chin.

Froch, 31, doesn’t have the speed or the athleticism that Taylor has, but Carl is hoping that he can wear Taylor down and hurt him with his big shots as the fight moves forward into the fight.

Calzaghe is a bit of a moaner and i can see him saying this just to back at Froch (dont believe me about the moaner, read his autobiography!!!).

But in saying that, i have to admit i havent seen much of Taylor and i wasnt overly impressed with Froch against Pascal. Pascal was by far the faster of the two and far slicker and more fluent in his movements, Froch seemed very slow and his punches seemed to take a while to land, if you know what i mean, apart from that, he threw far to many wayward shots. Yes Froch has power, but weak defense, he took to many clean shots from Pascal.

I just cant help but think that somebody like Kessler, Bika and certainly B-Hop should he fancy a pop would take full advantage of Frochs face, not just his chin, but his whole face being open to all kinds of shots.

    Calzaghe sour grapes

  • ukansodoff says:

or it coulc be called off after a late pitch inspection.

  • big fella says:

froch by ko, froch by points, taylor by ko or taylor by points thats my prediction. following some advice from ukansodoff.

if froch does beat taylor then i hope calzaghe shuts da hell up. taylor is better than anyone that calzaghe ever beat. roy jones is old and washed up and b-hop is old. they are two of the top competion calzaghe ever faced and i would say a current taylor is better than both of them. IF froch does beat taylor then he due some credit.

  • The Professor says:

The Man right now in the Supermiddleweight divison is SAKIO BIKA. he is the most FEARED fighter now because B-Hop don’t want to fight him and Jeff Lacy is runnin scare and talking out his head side-ways.Well I guess the winner of the Carl vs. Taylor could be Sakio next matchup. Sakio Bika wants the winner of that fight. Make this happen big time Promoters. Bob Arum big money fights know mismatch bouts like Kirland vs. Walker
Come on promoter be for real. From the boxing Professor.

I think calzaghe has a very valid point i mean taylor has speed and skills and might win a decision if carl can’t knock him out before then. I have a feeling taylor is going to be knocked out since pavlik knocked him out and froch has as much if not more power than him

  • zach white says:

Calzaghe is just trying to get his own back on Carl here. I think Froch could knock this guy out. i dont think Taylor will be able to knock Froch out. it will be points to Taylor or Froch ko’s him, thats my thoughts on it anyhow.

I think calzaghe has a point. Froch won an in a tough and amazing fight that night against pascal who is a very good boxer.

But Taylor is among the elite, its another step up from Pascal (i think).

If i had to put money on it id put it on Froch by KO but Froch KO, Froch points, Taylor KO and Taylor points are all very valid outcomes at this moment.

Taylor and all boxers at this level could really show Froch up like Lacy was shown up by Calzaghe, i just dont know whats guna happen.

Its just unchartered terratory for him.
