Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr. In September?

calzaghe45344.jpgBy William MacKay: In the latest boxing news, five-time world champion boxer Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) is saying that he’ll be fighting Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) likely in September, and that the fight will possibly be taking place in Las Vegas rather than Calzaghe’s native Wales. This bout will be Calzaghe’s last fight, as he’s decided to skip over the idea of facing undefeated middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, who Calzaghe feels isn’t up to his level. As things work out, Calzaghe’s decision to end with only the Jones fight leaves pretty much all of his boxing fans greatly disappointed, for they wanted to see him fight the power-punching Pavlik, who is considered by many to be the best fighter in the middleweight division bar none.

The decision to fight Jones rather than Pavlik is especially bad, in that it makes Calzaghe look more than a little afraid to many people in the boxing community. Worse, however, is Calzaghe’s excuses to try and explain it away, suggesting that Pavlik would only lose if they fought and that he’s not up to his level, all of which seem rather evasive, as if he’s hiding the real reason why he’s not interested in fighting Pavlik.

I think for most people, they’d have a lot more respect for Calzaghe if he came straight out and said, Hey, I don’t want to fight Pavlik, because he’s too young, strong and would probably beat me at this late stage in my career. After all, he’s 10 years younger than me. At least by saying that, Calzaghe would be truthful with people and they could respect him more, even though not liking his lack of courage, than at present in which many people feel lied to my him.

As far as Calzaghe’s decision to fight the 39 year-old Jones, this also looks bad because of the fact that Jones is perceived as being totally shot, not the same fighter he was earlier in his career. Most people would give Calzaghe very little chance to beat a prime Jones, who would be much too fast and powerful for the light-hitting Calzaghe to beat, which makes it all the worse that Calzaghe has waited until this point in Jones’ career to try and fight him.

It makes it seem as if Calzaghe waited him out, deciding on fighting him only after Jones had reached the point where his boxing skills had eroded sufficiently enough to take the fight without much risk. I personally could understand this fight if it had occurred, say six or more years ago, but for it to happen now, with Jones having lost three out of his last six fights, it seems ridiculous now for the fight to take place. For Calzaghe, however, he has said that he wants to make as much money as he can before he gets out, having fought much of his career in mostly small fights against relatively obscure European fighters.

Some of the blame for not making money earlier in his boxing career rests entirely on his shoulders, for he had to have known by staying and fighting exclusively in Europe, which is where almost all of his fights have taken place, he would be limiting the amount of money he could make. Now, however, with countless opportunities presenting themselves to him against top American fighters like Pavlik, Calzaghe has instead opted to take the easy money and fight Jones, and then get out of the sport.

That’s particularly sad, for he still is fighting at the top of his game and isn’t showing signs of slowing down despite his advanced age of 36. In truth, he probably could go one fighting at this level for another 3-4 years, possibly a little more than that, which is what makes it seem odder that he’s decided to up and quit now that many of the top American fighters want to fight him.

With the way he’s fighting, Calzaghe probably could easily run the table, fighting Jones, Pavlik, Sergio Mora, Oscar De La Hoya, Arthur Abraham, Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson in the next couple of years. In doing so, he could really establish a lasting legacy that he’s been so badly chasing after. Short of that, a fight against Pavlik would almost nearly do the track and would go a long way in shutting up his many critics.

Well put. Hatton’s doing the same thing. They stay in there own “controlled” backyard and make themselves appear to be some kind of boxing great, then come to America and fight real challengers and then up and quit after 1 or 2 fights? Funny how that works. I give ROY JONES JR the upper hand when they fight. Jones is LIGHT YEARS FASTER (even now) and naturally bigger giving him more power, especially since Calzaghe slaps. Overall Calzaghe would loose to Pavlik by a CRUSHING KO in less than 3 rounds. NO WAY would it go all 12 and NO way would Joe KO PAVLIK. Calzaghe needs to stick around for at least 10 more fights and WIN everyone of them to get any kind of respect. Either Jones or Pavlik I have Calzaghe loosing. So there goes that idea of being anything great.

Wes you are a serious Txxt. you arent even worth debating with. i mean yeahh look how roy jones left america every other week to fight….NOT. its kinda convenient dont you think that the americans dont have to leave their back yard - they can sit around nice and cosy and wait for the rest of the world to come to them. So the british have to adapt to the times, the climate the fighting in the early hours of the morning which to the americans is just happens to be a nice early evening. Wes run along and stop pretending to know about boxing. get your mamma to make you a nice hot cup of cocoa whilst you play with your Transformers. stop wasting peoples precious boxing time.

haha don’t get all upset there little guy. You all get so defensive about little JOKE FAGZAGHE… if he were that great no one would have to defend him.. lol he is a joke… he BARLEY BEAT GRANDPA HOP who may I add put him on his ass in the 1st round…. lol… anyway you sir have a great day sticking up for a looser… lol…. I feel bad for you when he looses….. just as I did ALLLLLLLL THE HATTON fans that kept saying THERE HERO HATTON WOULD NEVER LOOSE and that HE WOULD BEAT THAT AMERICANS ASS…. look where that got them….hmmmmmmmmmmm… lol and I told EVERYONE OF THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER “I TOLD YOU SO” lol just as I’ll tell you….. YOU HERO IS GARBAGE… he will be exposed…. get a NEW HERO!!!!!

o and about ROY JONES, YOU HAD NO TOP P4P fighters worth shit for him to face….. YOU STILL don’t have ANY FIGHTERS THAT REPRESENT… you only have HATTON….hmmmm what happened to that guy… and last but least you have joe calzaghe and his daddy that tells him when and where to go…. who may I add have ONLY fought VERY few SELECTIVE fighters that are even worth mentioning… lol…. HOP was the ONLY real fighter that he has faced and HE BARLEY beat him….. and yes I KNOW……….. I KNOW…. don’t get your panties wet… LACY right?????? lol… YOU ALL MENTION LACY LIKE HE WAS ALI, I swear to you all that his only fight, that’s all you all talk about…. sure he beat a “MINI MIKE” “LEFT HOOK” “OVER HYPED” LACY…… booooooo that’s his ONLY fight… dude was what 21 or something…. lol….. yeah and then he fights PETER MANFREDO…. “A WORLD CLASS FIGHTER” according to JOE…lol….. POINT IS, Joe has NOW just started taking on real fights…. I don’t SEE why he wont fight PAVLIK… is it because HE JUST DESTROYED YOUR BOY LOCKETT… hahahahaha HIS DADDIES FIGHTER… i don’t know about you BUT that would make me want to fight him…… BUT we all know CALZAGHE he wants ROY after he’s past his prime, lost a few. BACK when he was TOP P4P calzaghe said in an interview “I don’t WANT TO FIGHT ROY” get your facts jack before you start talking like you know anything…. DUDE was scared and didn’t even want any until ROY LOST…. but its cool…. I think it will be a challenge for ROY, back in the day it would have been a world class beating. Jones was LIGHT YEARS ….. light years son…. ahead of JOE (REASON HE SAID HE didn’t WANT TO FIGHT HIM). So don’t talk to me like you KNOW anything…. Joe is a joke and will never go down in history UNLESS he sticks around and actually fights REAL fights FOR ONCE…. I will say I gave him credit in the Kessler fight. that’s about it…. he didn’t BITCH Out like I thought HE WOULD have done….. he didn’t even look impressive I just gave him credit for getting in the ring. Any fighter that is good that Joe gets the ring with Joe looks like shit… KESSLER (which is OK) HOPKINS (WORLD CLASS TOP FIGHTER) BOTH times he looked like “AN AVERAGE JOE” LIKE the media said he would…. dudes a phony, get a new hero…
