Froch vs. Golovkin negotiations underway

froch535By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like former IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch has finally taken interest in facing WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in what would be a very, very risky fight for the 37-year-old Froch.

According to Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn, he’s started negotiations with Golovkin’s management for a fight between them. Hearn believes it’s a fight that they could stage at Wembley Stadium in London, UK and fill the thing like they did with Froch’s fight against domestic fighter George Groves.

The idea is that the hard hitting Golovkin would have to move up to 168 to face Froch rather than him coming down to face Golovkin at middleweight or at a catch-weight. Froch would have the advantage in weight, but of course that probably wouldn’t matter much due to Golovkin’s huge punching power.

We saw what Golovkin did to the super middleweight-sized Martin Murray this year in him bludgeoning him into submission. If Murray’s huge frame didn’t help him against Golovkin then Froch’s likely won’t either. He’s certainly slower than Murray, and much slower than Golovkin’s last opponent Willie Monroe Jr.

“I’ve now spoken directly with Carl about this and he is interested,” Hearn said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “I only want him to take it if he’s genuinely motivated because it is a high-risk fight. But it would be massive and we can fill Wembley again. Given Carl’s interest, we have already begun negotiations with Golovkin’s people and they are very keen.”

This is much better fight for Froch than the one that he’d been interested in against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. For some reason, Froch was all worked up about that fight, as if beating Chavez Jr. would do something for his legacy. But it looks like Froch finally came to his senses and got a clue after Chavez Jr. was whipped by Andrzej Fonfara in a 10th round quit job last April.

Hearn has been talking about how Froch can’t get motivated enough to fight anyone. Well, if Froch can’t get motivated for a fight against Golovkin, then he really needs to consider retirement because it doesn’t get much better than this. If Froch comes out there unmotivated against Golovkin, he’s likely going to get blasted out straightaway by the hard hitting Kazakhstan fighter.

If Froch isn’t motivated, you can bet that Golovkin will, and he won’t be looking to carry Froch like he did with his last opponent Monroe. That means if Froch isn’t on his J-O-B in this fight, he’s going to be picking up his teeth from the canvas. It would pain me to see Froch plastered all over the canvas wondering what hit him.

It certainly wouldn’t sound good if Froch started with the excuses about him not being motivated for the fight. I mean, if Froch only gets motivated for George Groves and not for a much more talented fighter like Golovkin then it makes you wonder what’s on inside Froch’s head. Is he an underachiever or what?

“If I fight Golovkin I will back him up, take what he’s got and beat him up,” Froch said via the Dailymail.co.uk.

I don’t think it’s going to end like that for Froch. He may back Golovkin up occasionally, but I see Golovkin knocking Froch out after putting him on the canvas two or three times. Golovkin hits too hard and we already saw Froch hit the deck against Groves in their first fight and in his fight against Jermain Taylor. Andre Dirrell also had Froch walking on his heels after clipping him with a big shot in their fight in 2009.
