Lemieux could face Monroe Jr. or Curtis Stevens in March

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) will be back in the ring two months from now in March, possibly against former world title challengers Curtis Stevens (27-5, 20 KOs) and/or Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs), according to Dan Rafael. Both Stevens and Monroe were knocked out in the past by champion Gennady Golovkin.

Lemieux, 27, was stopped by Golovkin in the 8th round last October in a fight that was televised by HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York. Lemieux talked a good game ahead of time, but he failed to back up his talk in the ring. Indeed, Lemieux was timid in the fight and didn’t attack Golovkin the way he had said he was going to.

Monroe Jr: Canelo is too strong for Golovkin

1-canelo-cotto (4)By Dan Ambrose: Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) still believes that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) is too fast and too strong for the 33-year-old IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs). Monroe Jr. has been singing the praises for the 25-year-old Canelo ever since Golovkin knocked him out in the 6th round earlier this year in May 2015 in a fight in which Golovkin dropped Monroe three times before the fight was halted.

Monroe feels that he had success at times with Golovkin, when the two of them were fighting in close on the inside. Monroe was able to land an occasional shot. However, it also looked like Golovkin was taking it easy on Monroe and not hitting him with full force like he had in the 2nd round of the fight, a round in which he knocked Monroe down twice.

Monroe Jr: Canelo beats GGG!

1-golovkin3 (11)By Dan Ambrose: Willie Monroe Jr. was very impressed with the performance of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) last Saturday night in his 12 round unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to win the WBC middleweight title.

Monroe Jr. came away from watching the fight with the belief that the 25-year-old Canelo would definitely beat Golovkin when/if they face each other. Monroe Jr. lost to Golovkin earlier this year in getting stopped in the 6th round last May at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin and the Willie Monroe Effect…

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy J Caldwell: The problem with elite boxers with an endless list of no name fighters to his or her credit is this: It generally tends to rub diehard boxing fans the wrong way.

Clearly, the guy from Kazakhstan, Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) can fight: With an amateur record of over 340 wins, and a KO ratio in the professional ranks of well over 90%, the numbers speak for themselves. The argument, however, then turns to the ubiquitous question, presumably, most prize fighters hate being asked…which is this: Just who has he [Golovkin] been beating?

Lemieux could trouble Golovkin on the inside, says Monroe

Image: Lemieux could trouble Golovkin on the inside, says MonroeBy Dan Ambrose: Middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. thinks that IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) has a good shot of beating IBO/WBA 160lb champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) if Lemieux stays close to Golovkin and forces him to fight on the inside when the two of them face each other on October 17th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Monroe says he gave Golovkin problems in their fight last May when he was fighting him in close. Monroe was stopped in the 6th round though after he quit following a knockdown. I’m not sure that Monroe is the guy that should be giving advice for Lemieux in how to beat Golovkin because he failed miserably in getting dropped three times in the fight.

Monroe: Golovkin was easy to hit

Image: Monroe: Golovkin was easy to hitBy Dan Ambrose: Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) may have lost to IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) last Saturday night by a 6th round, but to listen to Monroe Jr. after the fight, you’d think he was the one that won and not Golovkin. Monroe was really patting himself on the back for his effort, and talking about how easy it was for him to land his shots against Golovkin.

Monroe, who actually quit on his feet in the 6th rather than going out on his shield, even said that he fought like a warrior and said that they would have had to kill him to get him out of the ring.

Monroe doesn’t want Mayweather to fight Golovkin

Image: Monroe doesn’t want Mayweather to fight GolovkinBy Dan Ambrose: After taking a beating last Saturday night in a fight in which he ultimately quit in the 6th round, #2 WBA middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he doesn’t want to see boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) face IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in the near future.

Monroe, 28, doesn’t think Mayweather has anything to prove by fighting the popular Golovkin, and he believes that it would be too tough of a task in Mayweather coming up in weight all the way to 160 to fight the Kazakhstan fighter.

Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGG

Image: Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGGBy Dan Ambrose: Despite being dominated and bludgeoned into quitting on his feet in the 6th round, #2 WBA Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he thinks that former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) would defeat IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) if they were to face each other right now.

Monroe picks Canelo to beat Golovkin because he feels that Canelo has the better hand speed than GGG, and he sees Canelo’s power as being very good as well. Monroe does think that Golovkin would have an edge over Miguel Cotto, at least in terms of punching power.

Sanchez: Golovkin-Monroe fight should have been stopped in 2nd round

Image: Sanchez: Golovkin-Monroe fight should have been stopped in 2nd roundBy Allan Fox: Last night boxing fans saw a mostly one-sided fight with IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) stopping Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in the 6th round at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Monroe fought well in rounds 1, 3 and 4. Things went really bad for Monroe in the 2nd round though with him getting knocked down twice from hard power shots from Golovkin. Abel Sanchez, the trainer for Golovkin, thinks the fight should have been halted in the 2nd round when Monroe was badly hurt from a left hook from Golovkin.

Why Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin’s next opponent should be Erislandy Lara

Image: Why Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin's next opponent should be Erislandy LaraBy David Alexander: Last night, IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) defeated and scored a TKO victory against challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in Inglewood, California. A tune up fight for GGG, the match wasn’t a surprising outcome considering Golovkin was a heavy favorite coming in. Against a slick and southpaw fighter, Golovkin handled with ease a boxer that moves around a lot and uses his movement.

Considering that Monroe Jr. isn’t in the same class as GGG, yesterday’s fight magnifying that, Golovkin ahould consider a fight against Erislandy Lara in September or November.
