YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will be getting his first taste of light heavyweight punching power this Saturday night against undefeated #1 IBF Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on March 26 on HBO Championship Boxing. This is going to be a real interesting fight because the ring rusty Ward is going to be taking on one of the best fighters in the 175lb division.

There are arguably two or three better fighters in the light heavyweight division than Barrera, but he’s definitely one of the best and one of the strongest guys in the division.

Expect Andre Ward to school Sullivan Barrera on Saturday night

ward533By Paul Lam: On Saturday, former super middleweight monarch Andre Ward will make his debut at the full light heavyweight limit against top-ranked contender Sullivan Barrera in his hometown of Oakland, California in what promises to be an intriguing clash, not least because victory for Ward will secure a mouth-watering showdown with WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev later this year on HBO that would be one of the biggest boxing events of 2016.

In 2012 Ward was in his prime and on top of the world, figuratively and literally. Having swept aside the cream of the super middleweight division in the Super Six tournament, he defended his titles against reigning light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, who came down in weight for the bout, and clinically outclassed him en route to a tenth round TKO victory.

Sanchez: Sullivan Barrera will be too good for Andre Ward

ward6By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night on March 26, the ring rusty former WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will be facing unbeaten light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on HBO Boxing from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

At one time, Ward was considered the best fighter in the 168lb division, but sadly, he has only fought two times since 2012. On Saturday night, the 31-year-old Ward will be moving up to light heavyweight to take on one of the best fighters in the division in unbeaten Barrera.

Abel Sanchez, the trainer for the 34-year-old Barrera, thinks they’ll be too good for Ward in this fight. Sanchez notes that Ward didn’t show that he’s the same fighter he was in the past in his recent fight against Paul Smith last year in June.

Hopkins: Andre Ward will KO Sullivan Barrera

ward555By Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins is picking Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) to defeat unbeaten Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) by a 5th round knockout in their fight this Saturday night on March 26th on HBO Championship Boxing from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Hopkins doesn’t go into why he thinks Ward will win the fight by a knockout, but he obviously believes he’ll have too much talent for the 34-year-old Cuban Barrera. This is Ward’s debut at light heavyweight, and a lot of eyes will be on him to see how he does in this fight.

If Ward wins, a fight against IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev could be his next opponent in November. Hopkins doesn’t want Ward to take the fight with Kovalev yet, however, because he thinks the fight needs to be build up more to make it a bigger fight.

Hopkins also sees Kovalev as having too much momentum at this time because of his recent win over him as well as other fighters. Hopkins wants to see Ward get comfortable in the 175lb division before he faces a wrecking machine like Kovalev.

“The king of that division [Ward] moved up to light heavyweight and that’s Andre Ward, and he’s making his debut at light heavyweight,” said Hopkins to Fighthype.com. “I think he’ll beat him by a knockout by a mid-round knockout, late knockout,” said Hopkins.

Hopkins: Ward shouldn’t fight Kovalev right now

1-HopkinsPhillyWorkout4Kovalev_Hoganphotos5By Dan Ambrose: Former world champion Bernard Hopkins doesn’t think it’s a good idea for former WBA/WBC 168lb champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) to face unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev at this point in his career.

Hopkins reasons that Kovalev is doing really well with his career in recent fights, and he thinks that Ward should just look to get some fights under his belt at 175 before he starts thinking about fighting Kovalev right now. Hopkins is looking at Ward’s career from a business standpoint, and he feels it’s a bad idea for Ward to take the fight right now with Kovalev without milking the fight for as long as possible before taking it.

Andre Ward not overlooking Sullivan Barrera

ward5By Allan Fox: Next Saturday night on March 26, Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will be facing Cuban Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) in the 31-year-old Ward’s first real fight at 175lbs on HBO Boxing from the Oracles Arena in Oakland, California.

Ward needs to win this fight so that he can get to an arguably more important match against unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. Barrera is considered to be a good fighter, but not in Ward’s class in terms of talent.

However, Ward isn’t overlooking Barrera. He seems him as a real test, and he’s not going to make the mistake of assuming he’ll get past the 34-year-old contender. This is Ward’s real test at light heavyweight, and he doesn’t want to spoil it by getting beaten.

Andre Ward vs. Sullivan Barrera 8 days away

ward31323By Allan Fox: Andre Ward’s fight against unbeaten highly ranked light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) is only eight days away for their fight on March 26 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

This is the moment of truth for the 31-year-old Ward. He’s going to show in this fight whether he’s got the power, size and enough left in the tank to compete in the 175lb division. Right now, we don’t know that Ward can compete at a high level at 175 because it’s a different animal from what he’s been doing at 168 in the super middleweight division.

Ward thinks he can KO Barrera

ward7By Allan Fox: Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) plans on making a statement in his first fight at light heavyweight against Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on March 26 on HBO Boxing. Ward wants to show the 175lb division that he’s arrived, and he sees a conclusive victory over the 34-year-old Barrera as one way of accomplishing that task. We’re going to find out if Andre Ward is still an elite fighter when he steps foot inside the ring against Barrera on March 26th.

Ward, 31, isn’t ruling out getting a knockout in this fight, although he’s not necessarily going to be looking to get a KO. He feels that a knockout will be the end product of him following his game plan for the fight.
