Pacquiao vs. Vargas: Did Kellerman rush to write off the fight?

Image: Pacquiao vs. Vargas: Did Kellerman rush to write off the fight?

By Gerardo Granados: Since the November 5th fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas was officially announced, I have read and hear criticism towards this fight, but I don’t think it’s a bad match up at all. In fact, I believe this one might as well end up in the upset of the year. So, I asked to a friend sports journalist Niccolo Chaves if he thought that Max Kellerman had rushed to write off the Jessie Vargas vs Manny Pacquiao upcoming fight. But my friend didn’t know what Max Kellerman had said at the ESPN First Take show last week.

So I told him that basically Kellerman said Manny Pacquiao was cherry picking Jessie Vargas. My friend replied “Well, Vargas is no Sugar Ray Leonard, but he still has a belt and can be decent after the third Tim Bradley fight. When Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao are involved, the expectations are so sky high that often their matches are mismatches.”

Kellerman tears into Pacquiao for fighting Vargas

kellerman

By Chris Williams: Max Kellerman in his ESPN role as a commentator tore into Manny Pacquiao today for his decision to fight for a world title against WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas on November 5 instead of choosing to move down in weight to fight WBC/WBO 140lb champion Terence Crawford.

Kellerman believes that Pacquiao chose the Vargas fight because it was the easier fight for him than the Crawford match-up, which Kellerman sees as a potential 50-50 affair. Kellerman says that Pacquiao vs. Vargas fight is a “money grab” on Pacquiao’s part or at least it looks like money grab.

What Kellerman fails to see is that there’s no real reason to fight Crawford, because he’s A. not a pay-per-view attraction B. There’s no upside in fighting him because he’s not well known C. Pacquiao won’t get credit from the casual boxing fans for beating Crawford D. Pacquiao would be risking a much, much bigger money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. by taking the small money fight against Crawford.

Max Kellerman: Pacquiao GOAT over Mayweather?

YouTube video

By Jaime Ortega: In a recent interview, Max Kellerman stated, “Pacquiao is the greatest of our generation.” Obviously, Mayweather fans take such statement as blasphemy — arguing Max is irrational and incoherent. How could an HBO analyst, who predicted that Floyd would beat Pacquiao, suddenly imply that Manny Pacquiao is the greater fighter of our generation? One theory is that he works for HBO and bias to his network, but in May 2 2015 out of all the HBO analyst Max thought Floyd Mayweather Jr. would probably win – the HBO favoritism conspiracy don’t work.

Mayweather responds to Kellerman saying Pacquiao is best of this era

1-LR_FIGHT NIGHT-FLOYD MAYWEATHER-04012016-8767By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t take it too well in hearing that HBO’s Max Kellerman said that he feels that Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter of this era. Pacquiao lost to Mayweather last May by a 12 round decision.

For Kellerman to still believe that Pacquiao is the best fighter of this era despite the loss to Mayweather and losses to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t sit right with Mayweather. With what he feels he’s accomplished in the sport over the course of his career, Mayweather believes that he stands alone at the top as the greatest fighter of all time.

Kellerman: Pacquiao shouldn’t fight Crawford

1-LR_MAYPAC-TRAPPFOTOS-FINAL PRESSER-9963By Dan Ambrose: HBO analyst Max Kellerman thinks Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) should steer clear of a fight against WBO 140lb champion Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) for his final fight of his career next year in April. Kellerman sees Crawford as too mean, and too difficult of a fight for Pacquiao for his last fight of his career.

While Kellerman acknowledges that Pacquiao is faster, stronger, more athletic and more experienced than Crawford, he still sees Crawford as a bad option due to his meanness.

Kellerman: Andre Ward is the No.1 P4P; Golovkin is unproven

ward5By Dan Ambrose: HBO analyst Max Kellerman has moved WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) No.1 in his personal pound-for-pound list now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has retired from boxing.

If Mayweather comes back, then Kellerman believes that he should be No.1 still. Kellerman says he doesn’t have unbeaten knockout artist IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) high on his pound-for-pound list because he’s still unproven because none of the top middleweights want to fight him aside from IBF 160lb champion David Lemieux.

Kellerman: Some people think Pacquiao sold out for money – by fighting with an injured shoulder

By Chris Williams: Last Saturday, HBO commentator Max Kellerman sounded off on his view of Manny Pacquiao’s revelation of him fighting with a preexisting shoulder injury for his May 2nd mega-clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Kellerman acknowledges that a lot of boxing fans believe that Pacquiao sold out by choosing to take the $100 million+ payday for the fight by choosing to go through with the event despite a bad shoulder injury that he sustained last April, Kellerman thinks that Pacquiao did an admirable thing by going through with it.

Kellerman: Golovkin needs Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather to become a PPV fighter

golovkin99999By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Max Kellerman said what many boxing fans already knew last Wednesday night when he said that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) needs one of the big names – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to agree to fight Golovkin before he can become a pay-per-view seller in his own right.

It’s not enough right now that Golovkin is knocking out everyone he faces dating back to 2009. He needs to get a scalp from the like of Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather for him to get to the next level.

Kellerman: Does Provodnikov need guys to stand right in front of him to win?

provodnikov7001By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Max Kellerman brought up a good point about WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) perhaps needing guys that are tailor-made for him in order for him to win following his 12 round split decision defeat last night to Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Provodnikov complained bitterly after the fight saying “I like guys that are in front of me fighting me.”

Kellerman thought that Provodnikov was partially exposed last night by saying “Does he feel that he needs a guy right in front of him in order to win? It seems like he wants to move on and doesn’t want to fight the guy again.”

Rios to Kellerman: Do you think I’m a punching bag?

rios6740By Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) seemed to get upset with the questioning from HBO’s Max Kellerman last Saturday night moments after Rios had been beaten badly by Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Rios lost about as bad as a fighter can lose when it comes to a decision, and he wasn’t a happy camper moments after the fight when the judges scores revealed that he had lost by the scores 119-109, 120-108 and 118-110.

Rios’ face was badly swollen to where both sides of his eyes and the sides of his face were swollen outwards, and it looked painful. He had taken a vicious beating in a fight that probably should have been stopped by the 8th round when it was evident that Rios was not going to win and was just taking a one-way beating.
