Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn this Saturday

macklin56(Matthew Macklin seen here having a bad day at the office against Jorge Sebastian Heiland) By Scott Gilfoid: Three time world title challenger loser Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22 KOs) will be fighting this Saturday at junior middleweight champion Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KOs) in a scheduled 12 round bout for the vacant WBC International super welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, UK.

Macklin, 33, is dropping down in weight to the 154lb division because he feels that the move will help rejuvenate his sagging career. Macklin’s star has kind of faded with his recent 10th round knockout loss to Jorge Sebastian Heiland last year in November 2014.

Matthew Macklin says he’ll retire if he loses to Welborn

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (32-6, 21 KOs) says he’ll retire from boxing if he loses his October 17th fight against Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KOs) at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, UK. Macklin will be dropping down to the junior middleweight division for this fight.

What’s interesting about that is it’s been nine years since Macklin last fought at 154 when he was stopped in the 10th round by Jamie Moore in September 2006. Macklin made the right move in moving up to middleweight after that fight. But I think it’s a horrible idea for Macklin to be moving back down in weight at 33.

Frankie Gavin vs. Sam Eggington & Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn on October 17th

macklin56By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) will be taking his career in reverse mode in his next fight when he faces domestic fighter Sam Eggington (16-2, 9 KOs) on October 17th at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. It’s not surprising that Gavin’s career is being taken backwards step after his recent losses to IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook last May, and Leonard Bundu in 2014.

In between those defeats, Gavin beat a mess of domestic level fighters and proved that he can bet those types of fighters. However, Gavin did have a controversial decision win over Bradley Skeete in 2014, which tells you that Gavin is basically a domestic level fighter himself in terms of boxing skills and talent.

Frankie Gavin vs. Jason Welborn on Friday

gavin434By Scott Gilfoid: British welterweight champion Frankie Gavin (14-0, 10 KO’s) will be defending his domestic level strap against challenger Jason Welborn (11-1,5 KO’s) on Friday night at the Town Hall, Walsall, West Midlands, UK. Gavin recently captured the British strap against Junior Witter last November in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision.

This wasn’t a prime Witter, however, as he’s lost a lot of his stamina and fighting ability in the last five years. A prime Witter would have likely schooled Gavin badly.

As it was, Witter gave Gavin all kinds of problems for the first three rounds, but then after that Witter stopped punching and mostly just stood and postured. He was obviously too gassed out to keep throwing punches, as he just couldn’t let his shots go. Gavin then took over the fight and coasted to a 12 round decision.

Frankie Gavin vs. Jason Welborn on January 18th

gavin434By Scott Gilfoid: British welterweight champion Frankie Gavin (14-0, 10 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his British strap on January 18th against 26-year-old challenger Jason Welborn (11-1, 5 KO’s) at the Town Hall, in Walsall, England.

Gavin, 27, is coming off of a mostly one-sided in over 38-year-old former WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter last November at York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London. Gavin didn’t look impressive early in the fight, as he struggled with Witter’s hand speed and power.
