Errol Spence Jr: Time to make a statement against Algieri

spence4By Jeff Aranow: Undefeated #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) plans on making a statement next month in his fight on April 16 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Spence be fighting on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC. His opponent is former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs).

This is a fight that will show to the world whether Spence has the talent to champion and the next guy to lead the sport. A lot of fans believe that Spence is the next guy that will take over the 147lb division. It’s hard to say whether he has that kind of talent or not.

Errol Spence Jr – The welterweight primed for a big 2016

spenceBy Daniel Hughes: It seems 2016 will see a changing of the guard in the welterweight scene, fighters have retired like Floyd Mayweather and of course Manny Pacquiao will be set to follow him after facing Timothy Bradley once again. Time waits for no man and boxing is certainly a sport that historically fighters that retire should stay that way.

Finances and ego sometimes leads to the warriors of old lacing them back up again. The lure of PPV dollars and TV companies and promoters offering large sums, hard to turn down maybe we will see either or both fight again, don’t rule it out.

The welterweight scene has a void to fill for sure and TV will be looking for a star to step into the picture. The UK has of course Kell Brook and Amir Khan a fight that would make both millions here, but a fight that sells worldwide, frankly at this point no.

Errol Spence Jr named ESPN ‘Prospect of the Year’

spence5(Photo credit: Premier Boxing champions) By Dan Ambrose: After making a controversial pick of choosing WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as their ‘Fighter of the Year’ 2015, ESPN finally got things right by selecting unbeaten welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) as their ‘Prospect of the Year’ for 2015.

It’s kind of hard to call Spence, 25, a prospect at this point because he’s been a top 15 contender since 2014. In theory, prospects should be young fighters that aren’t ranked in the top 15. You can’t say that about Spence. He’s definitely a contender and has been for some time.

Errol Spence picked as PBC’s ‘Top Rising Star of the Year’

spenceBy Dan Ambrose: #10 IBF, #10 WBC, #10 WBO, #11 WBA welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) has been selected by the Premier Boxing Champions organization as their ‘Rising Star of the Year’ for 2015 for his four impressive wins over Samuel Vargas, Phil Lo Greco, Chris Van Heerden an Alejandro Barrera.

Spence, 25, was not considered for the ‘Fighter of the Year’ by PBC, because that honor went to WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman for his two wins over Robert Guerrero and Luis Collazo.

It would have been nice though if Spence’s adviser Al Haymon had let him get a crack at Thurman in order to test his chin and his ability to take body shots. 34-year-old Collazo almost dropped Thurman in their fight last July with a body shot.

Jeff Mayweather: Andre Ward and Errol Spence are too quiet

ward7777(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Chris Williams: Trainer Jeff Mayweather thinks that unbeaten former Olympians Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) and Errol Spence Jr. (18-0, 15 KOs) are both too quiet for their own good, and hurting their careers by not talking more in the media in terms of trash talking and such.

Both fighters are quiet and respectful for the most part, but Mayweather thinks that approach is not a good one for making yourself known to the casual boxing fans. The hardcore fans of course know who those fighters are, but the casual fans don’t because neither of them is loud and over the top the way that they need to be in order to get attention from the fans.
