Image: Kirkland injured, Cotto fight off

By Dan Ambrose: James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) has reportedly suffered an injury and his scheduled February 25 fight against Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is now off, according to Dan Rafael. Kirkland and Cotto were supposed to be fighting on HBO pay-per-view at the Ford Center at the Star, in Frisco, Texas.

There’s no word what kind of injury the 32-year-old Kirkland suffered and how the injury occurred. It’s unclear how the ticket sales have gone for the fight. It’s not a fight that a lot of the hardcore boxing fans were excited about, as Kirkland hasn’t fought in two years since being knocked out in the 3rd round by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2015.

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is reportedly interested in facing 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) in his next fight after he faces James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on February 25 on HBO PPV from the Ford Center at The Star, in Frisco, Texas.

This would be part of Cotto’s last fights of his career, as he plans on retiring at the end of 2017. Cotto is expected to fight Saul Canelo Alvarez in December on HBO PPV. Cotto already lost to Marquez a year a half ago in November 2015, and he hasn’t fought since that time. Marquez hasn’t fought in almost 3 years.

Cotto: Kirkland is the best and most dangerous fighter

Image: Cotto: Kirkland is the best and most dangerous fighter

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s fight against James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on February 25th next month is perceived by the boxing public as a dreadful mismatch, and not worthy of being televised on HBO PPV. Cotto, 36, doesn’t agree, because he’s saying that Kirkland is the best fighter.

Kirkland hasn’t shown himself to be the best though. He’s not ranked in the top 15 at 154, and he’s coming off of a 3rd round knockout win over Saul Canelo Alvarez from 2015. Kirkland opted not to fight in 2016, which isn’t surprising because he didn’t fight in 2014 either. Kirkland is one of those fighters who rarely sees action.

Ward will do what he wants to do, says Roc Nation executive

Image: Ward will do what he wants to do, says Roc Nation executive

By Allan Fox: Andre Ward’s promoter Michael Yormark of Roc Nation Sports isn’t sure whether Ward will choose to continue his boxing career and face Sergey Kovalev in a rematch. Yormark says it’s up to Ward whether he wants to continue his career. Ward is sounding like he’s not sure if he wants to continue fighting and face Kovalev a second time.

This of course could be Ward hoping to get a better deal for the rematch with Kovalev, as there would be negotiations that would need to take place before a second fight could be scheduled.

Miguel Cotto wants Canelo rematch

Image: Miguel Cotto wants Canelo rematch

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is already talking about wanting a rematch against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) despite the fact that he’s not gotten past his scheduled opponent for next month in James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on February 25 on HBO PPV.

Cotto, 36, says he wants the best fights, and that if Canelo wants to face him, then he’s ready to fight him again. As far as Cotto is concerned, he beat him in their previous fight in November 2015, and the outcome of the fight was a controversial one.

Cotto vs. Kirkland on HBO PPV prices

Image: Cotto vs. Kirkland on HBO PPV prices

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s fight against James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) next month on February 25 on HBO pay-per-view will be going for $49.95 on regular PPV to $59.95 for HD, according to RingTV for boxing fans interested in purchasing the fight. That’s a lot of money for a fight that shapes up to be a mismatch.

I think a lot of people would prefer to see the fight for free if at all. For me, when I heard that Cotto was fighting Kirkland, I assumed that it was a fight on free television, because it’s such a mismatch on paper. When I heard that it’s being televised on HBO PPV, I was stunned. I couldn’t believe the boldness of that move.

Cotto to fight just once more after Kirkland fight

Image: Cotto to fight just once more after Kirkland fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) plans on fighting just one more time before retiring after his February 25 fight against James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on HBO PPV at the Ford Center at The Star, in Frisco, Texas. Cotto, 36, says he once big name for his last fight otherwise he’s going to forget about the fight.

With 2017 being Cotto’s last year in boxing, he’s going to be kind of limited when it comes to getting a big name for him to fight. Cotto hasn’t shown much interest in facing the top fighters at 154 like the Charlo brothers, Erislandy Lara, Julian Williams and Demetrius Andrade.

Cotto-Kirkland: Is this PPV worthy?

Image: Cotto-Kirkland: Is this PPV worthy?

By Chris Williams: Earlier today, the news of the Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland fight was made official with the fight taking place on HBO PPV on Feb.25 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. There’s no word yet on how much the Cotto-Kirkland fight will sell for on HBO pay-per-view.

Hopefully, it’s a good price, because this is NOT a championship level fight between Cotto and Kirkland. It’s two aging fighters coming off of a LONG layoff of over one year with both of them having been beaten soundly by Saul Canelo Alvarez in their last fights.

Given those circumstances, it makes sense for the Cotto-Kirkland fight to go for a nice price for the boxing fans. I personally think the Cotto vs. Kirkland fight would sell quite well if it were to be sold on PPV for around $2 dollars.

The tickets for the Cotto-Kirkland fight go on sale this Thursday on 12/22. The tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com. This is going to be a tough sale to get the boxing public interested in paying to see the fight on HBO PPV.
