Cotto not worried about Daniel Geale rehydrating to 170+

1-Cotto5By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) isn’t worried in the slightest in the potential of his opponent Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs), who is a legitimate middleweight, rehydrating from the 157lb catch-weight all the way into the mid-170s by the time the two fighters face each other this Saturday, June 6th, on HBO Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Cotto feels that his experience will negative whatever weight advantage that the 34-year-old Geale has in this fight. Cotto will likely be no heavier than 160, which means he could be giving away 10-15 pounds against a 170+ pound Geale in this fight.

Cotto can’t afford to look bad against Geale this Saturday

1-Cotto3By Dan Ambrose: With a big money fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez slated for the fall, WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) absolutely has to look good this Saturday, June 6th, in his fight against #6 WBC Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

While a loss for the 34-year-old Cotto won’t stop the Canelo fight from getting made, it will take away a lot of money that he and 24-year-old Canelo can scoop up from the U.S boxing public from HBO pay-per-view. Some fans will still gladly purchase the Cotto-Canelo fight even if Cotto loses or looks really bad against the 34-year-old Geale, but you have to believe the PPV numbers will be far fewer than they would if Cotto destroys Geale on Saturday night.

Cotto: I’m only thinking of Geale; if Canelo fight happens, it will be after June 6th

1-Cotto17By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) appears to be tiring from the constant barrage of questions about when and if he’ll be fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Instead of fans wanting to know about Cotto’s next fight against Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) on June 6th, Cotto has been busy fielding questions about Canelo and a lot about Gennady Golovkin.

Cotto wants the media to know that he’s only focused on the Geale fight, and after that contest is past, then he’ll focus on his next fight. But whether Cotto wants to acknowledge it or not, Canelo does appear to be the next fight for him.

Roach: Cotto’s ring knowledge will be Geale’s undoing

roach6By Dan Ambrose: In what appears to be a sly attempt to pat himself on the back, trainer Freddie Roach said that the main advantage that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) will have over his 34-year-old opponent Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 157 pounds is Cotto’s ring knowledge.

Ultimately, Roach thinks that Cotto will be too smart for the No.6 WBC ranked contender when they battle it out on June 6th on HBO Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Cotto says he has verbal agreement with HBO for Canelo fight after Geale

cotto57By Dan Ambrose: In what has to be seen as positive news for a big fight this year, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) revealed on Wednesday that he has verbal agreements with both HBO and Golden Boy Promotions for him to face Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this year after the June 6th HBO-televised fight between Cotto and Australian Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The bad news for boxing fans is that Cotto is saying it’s a verbal agreement. He didn’t say written agreement, which means that Cotto can always go in another direction if he chooses to rather than face Canelo.

Cotto: I dictate what’s important for my career

cotto56By Dan Ambrose: It looks like WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) wasn’t ready for the questions he was getting about when and why he’s not fighting his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin when Cotto met with the media this week ahead of his fight on June 6th against #6 WBC Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

Instead of the media asking Cotto harmless questions about his match-up with the 34-year-old Geale, they kept pouring in question after question related to Golovkin. Cotto is now realizing that he can escape those questions when he’s at home, but when he’s outdoors and meeting with the media, people want to know when he’s going to face Golovkin.

Cotto will shine against Geale, says Roach

cotto7By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) is going to come out on the losing end on June 6th in his title challenge against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 157lbs, says Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach. He expects Cotto to impress in this fight, and he sees him scoring a knockout.

After Cotto beats Geale, Roach wants Cotto to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next. The winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight should face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Roach says.

Canelo likely next for Cotto after Geale fight

cotto55By Dan Ambrose: If WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) can get past former IBF/WBA 160lb champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their fight on June 6th, Cotto will likely be facing the red-headed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in the fall, according to Steve Kim. He spoke with reps for Cotto, indicated that the 34-year-old Cotto will indeed be facing Canelo next.

There’s talk that Cotto will take the fight with Canelo even if he loses the fight to Geale. In other words, the Canelo fight can be seen as a kind of cash out fight for Cotto. He doesn’t really have many other options for big money fights unless he wants to bite the bullet and face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Cotto hasn’t given in any sign that he wants any part of the hard hitting Golovkin, even though the money would be good for Cotto.

Cotto could be out-weighed by 15lbs by Geale on June 6th

Image: Cotto could be out-weighed by 15lbs by Geale on June 6thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) could be giving away as much as 15 pounds against challenger Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 157 pounds on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Geale’s promoter Gary Shaw expects him to rehydrate to 175 after he makes weight for Cotto’s requested catch-weight fight.

It’s kind of sad to see the WBC middleweight champion reduced to asking for a catch-weight for him to defend his title. This is Cotto’s first defense of his WBC 160lb title that he won a year ago in June against 40-year-old Sergio Martinez, who came into the fight with a bum right knee after having had two surgeries on it in an attempt to fix the problem.

Cotto vs. Geale: Is the 157 pounds catch weight needed?

cotto57By Gerardo Granados: The reader must have noticed that Miguel Cotto won his WBA super welterweight and WBC middleweight titles against injured opponents, if not then you should search for the videos and see for yourself how the brave Yuri Foreman refuse to handle his championship title even though he had a severely injured knee; it was a superb show of hunger and determination worth to watch.

When Cotto won his WBC middleweight strap Sergio Martinez´s knees betrayed him but Maravilla did his best to fight back until his corner stop the beating. And by the way neither Foreman nor Martinez make any excuses after his defeat.
