Arum thinks Algieri will beat Provodnikov tonight

provod63222(Photo courtesy Star Boxing (by Rich Villa) By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks tonight’s underdog Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) has a good chance of pulling off an upset against WBO 140-pound champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Arum also would likely to match Algieri up against his fighter Manny Pacquiao. Algieri vs. Pacquiao. Arum didn’t say when and where he’d like to stage that fight, but I assume he’s hoping to put it in Macao, China in November.

Purses: Provodnikov $750k, Algieri $100k, Andrade $200k, Rose $100k

provo5By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) will be receiving $750,000 for his title defense tonight against fringe contender Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Algieri will be getting a mere $100,000 as the challenger.

In the co-feature, WBO light middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (20-0, 13 KO’s) will be getting $200,000 in his fight against British challenger Brian Rose (25-1-1, 7 KO’s). For his part, Rose will be getting $100,000, which is the exact same amount as Algieri is getting in the main event. It doesn’t make much sense for Algieri and Rose to be getting the same amount when one of them is in the main even and the other on undercard.

It’s easy to see why Provodnikov wants to get a fight against Manny Pacquiao so badly. If he can win tonight and look good against Algieri, Provodnikov could make as much as $5 million in a fight against Pacquiao. That money would go far in Beryozovo, Russia, which is where Provodnikov lives.

Roach: Provodnikov will wear Algieri down early and knock him out

provo3(Photo credit: Ed Mulholland/HBO) By Chris Williams: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) will be fighting Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) tonight in Provodnikov’s first defense of his title. Provodnikoiv’s trainer Freddie Roach believes that he’ll be much too strong for the slender, 5’10” Algieri tonight, and he sees him wearing him down and halting him late in the fight.

Algieri was selected for Provodnikov after Thomas Dulorme and Hank Lundy were both rejected for the fight. Dulorme is a much better puncher, and Lundy is trickier. You have to wonder why Provodnikov’s team wanted Algieri instead of Dulorme or Lundy.

Weights: Provodnikov 139.8, Algieri 140

provo33(Copyright Ed Mulholland/HBO) By Chris Williams: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) successfully made weight on Friday in coming in at 139.8 pounds for his title defense against Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) tomorrow night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Agieri weighed in at 140lbs. The fight card will be televised on HBO’s Boxing After Dark at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, along with the co-feature bout between WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade and Brian Rose.

Andrade weighed in at 153.8lbs, whereas challenger Brian Rose came in at 153.4.

The Provodnikov-Algieri fight should be an interesting match-up due to the contrast in styles, and due to what’s at stake potentially for the Russian born Provodnikov should he win.

Provodnikov: I’m not going to let Algieri run for too long

provodnikov656By Dan Ambrose: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) expects challenger Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) to not make it easy for him to fight his fight this Saturday night. Provodnikov doubts that Algieri will stand in front of him the way he likes his opponents to do. However, Provodnikov says that he’s not worried about Algieri boxing and moving for 12 rounds because he insists that he’s fought lots of fighters with the exact same style as Algieri in the last.

The truth is Provodnikov has only fought one fighter with height and good boxing skills and that was Mauricio Herrera, who easily beat him. The rest of the guys that Provodnikov fought were largely sluggers very little talent, and nowhere near as good as Algieri. If Provodnikov did fight loads up fighters like Algieri, then he did at the amateur level and not the pro level, because the guys he’s faced at the pro level have been short fighters that slugged with him.

Provodnikov says he’s willing to die in the ring on Saturday

provodnikov69By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) says he’s ready to sacrifice his life on Saturday night in facing 30-year-old challenger Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) in his first defense of his WBO title at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Provodnikov will be on a seek and destroy mission against the quicker, taller and more agile Algieri in this fight, and he plans on trying to force him into a dog fight. Provodnikov has no other choice but to force Algieri into a brawl, because if he fails to draw him into a war then chances are pretty good that he’ll wind up losing the fight.

Provodnikov: I’m going to chase Algieri down

provodnikov22By Allan Fox: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) says he’s going into his fight this Saturday night against unbeaten #13 WBO challenger Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) like he’s the challenger instead of champion when the two of them square off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Provodnikov realizes that he has a tough opponent in 30-year-old Algieri, mostly due to his ability to box and move. This isn’t going to be a fight in which Provodnikov can depend on his opponent to meet him in the center of the ring for him to have an easy stationary target like he had in his fights against Mike Alvarado and Tim Bradley. Algieri will be elusive, and will be looking to stay away from Provodnikov all night in their HBO televised fight on Saturday.

Algieri ready to slug with Provodnikov if he has to

By Allan Fox: #13 WBO Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) recognizes that he’s going to need to slug with WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) at times in their June 14th fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Algieri, 30, knows full well that Provodnikov will be cutting off the ring all night long looking to KO him, but he’s going to make sure that it doesn’t happen too much.

Provodnikov: I’m going to pressure Chris Algieri

By Allan Fox: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) says he’s going to be putting a lot of pressure on the taller 5’10” challenger Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) in their fight on HBO two weeks from now at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Provodnikov, 5’6”, will be giving up 4 inches in height and 6 inches in reach to the 30-year-old Algieri, and he feels that he’s going to need to apply a lot of pressure against him in this fight in order to find success.

Provodnikov defends against Algieri on 6/14

provodnikovBy Dan Ambrose: In a disappointing match-up, WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) will be defending his title against #13 Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO’s) on HBO on June 14th from the Nassau Coliseum, in Uniondale, New York, USA. It’s surprising that HBO said yes to this fight, because it’s an awful one.

According to ESPN, Provodnikov’s trainer Freddie Roach turned down Hank Lundy for Provodnikov. Roach didn’t like the match-up for some reason. Thomas Dulorme was turned down by HBO because of his recent fight against Karim Mayfield, which wasn’t all that entertaining to watch. However, HBO must have skipped over Algieri’s boring win over Emmanuel Taylor last February, and his equally dull wins over Mike Arnaoutis and Wilfredo Acuna. Those performances made Dulorme’s fight against Mayfield seem thrilling in comparison.
