Lara: I plan on putting Canelo in the dirt

Erislandy Lara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) says he’s going to pick his opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) apart tonight and leave him on the canvas among the dirt at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lara says he always likes to fight guys that plod towards him the way that the Canelo will be likely doing tonight, because it gives him the opportunity to nail them with straight left hands and right hooks to the head while they’re marching forward.

Lara expects Canelo to walk into a lot of shots when they meet up in their catch-weight fight at 155 tonight on Showtime pay-per-view. If Canelo chooses not to pressure him and instead tries to box him, Lara feels that will make it just as easy because boxing is his game. He feels that he does well equally against boxers as well as pressure fighters.

Is Canelo not moving to 160 because of Golovkin?

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: In looking at how heavy Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) has been in his last several fights in rehydrating to over 170 pounds, and how he’s asked to fight his last two fights at a catch-weight of 155 [middleweight], the question that you have to ask is why isn’t Canelo moving up to middleweight to compete with guys in that division? 155 = middleweight, and it seems strange that Canelo is melting off 20 pounds to continue to fight against guys that he’s heavier than in the junior middleweight division.

I’m just curious about what’s the problem Canelo has in fighting guys his own size in the middleweight division as Gennady Golovkin? I know they sparred together in the past, and Golovkin said afterwards that Canelo was a “Good boy,” but is there some kind of problem with Canelo not wanting to face guys in this division?

Canelo needs to beat Lara to keep his marquee name, says Malignaggi

Canelo and Lara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: Showtime commentator Paulie Malignaggi believes that the 23-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) will remain a popular and championship level fighter even if he gets clowned tonight by WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) in Canelo’s requested catch-weight of 155 pounds, but as far as him being a marquee name, he’s going to take a hit in that area.

Malignaggi doesn’t see it possible for Canelo to continue to be a marquee fighter with him taking losses left and right each time he steps up against the very best. While Malignaggi gives Canelo a pat on the back for beating slow as molasses fighters like Alfredo Angulo, he notes that Angulo was perfect for Canelo due to his very, very slow style of fighting.

Canelo-Lara: Judging so important for tonight

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Gav Duthie: The last thing boxing needs tonight is another controversial decision. Apart from the boxers themselves the three most important people in a fight like this are the judges. When Saul Alvarez 43-1-1 (31) fights Erislandy Lara 19-1-2 (12) it is highly likely that they will be needed. We would all like to think that the best fighter will win the fight but history tells us this is not often the case.

Unfortunately in the murky world of boxing a fighters marketability often dictates who wins a close decision. The judges for the fight this evening are seasoned veterans Dave Moretti, Jerry Roth and Levi Martinez. These men have judged over 2000 fights between them and I am extremely hopeful that they will ensure the best man will win.

Weights: Canelo 155, Lara 155

Canelo and Lara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) was booed heavily by the pro-Canelo crowd in successfully weighing in at 155 pounds on Friday at the weigh-in at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada for his fight on Saturday at a 155 pound catch-weight against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs).

Lara looked almost in fighting weight and in excellent shape. He didn’t have the look of a fighter who had drained himself of water weight in order to make weight.

There was a quick stare down which was broken up by Lara, as he just shook his head in a way that suggested that Canelo doesn’t have what it takes to compete with him.

Canelo-Lara: A High Level Encounter

Canelo and Lara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KO’s) must be commended for taking this fight with Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KO’s). Lara, the Cuban defector, is as slick a southpaw as there is and stylistically looks to be a nightmare for the 23 year old Canelo who is looking to maintain the momentum he gained against Alfredo Angulo in March earlier this year.

Lara is himself coming off a convincing display against fellow left-hander Austin Trout in December 2013. Both Trout and Angulo are common opponents of Canelo and Lara, so we have two instances where they are directly comparable.

Canelo to get $1.5 million, Lara $1 million for Saturday

Boxing-PC(Picture credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) will be getting a guaranteed $1.5 million for his fight on Saturday night against Cuba’s Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) on Showtime pay-per-view.

Canelo, 23, could wind up with a lot more than the guaranteed money though, because this is before the pay-per-view sales, as well as the money that Canelo will likely receive from Mexican television money. It’s likely that Canelo will eventually wind up with considerably more than the $1.5 million of guaranteed money.

Canelo hints that he’ll try to box Lara

Boxing-PC(Picture credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: After being schooled badly by Floyd Mayweather Jr last September, you’d have thought that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-, 31 KOs) would have learned his lesson by now that he can’t afford to try and box slick fighters like Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s), but that’s what the 23-year-old is hinting that he’ll be doing on Saturday night in their middleweight pay-per-view match on Showtime from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo said “How will I beat him? With speed, movement and combinations.”

Speed is the way last way that the slow-footed, 170+ pound Canelo is going to beat a fast Cuban fighter like Lara, and if that’s the only plan that he and his trainer Chepo Reynoso have come up with in the last two months of training for this fight then Canelo is probably heading for a serious clowning on Saturday night.

What will Mayweather do if Lara wins?

lara945By Bob Smith: To this day, the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) vs. Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) fight intrigues, challenges, perplexes, and excites me. While I do favor Canelo to sneak by in a majority decision or unanimous decision, I wouldn’t be surprised by a Canelo KO/TKO or a Lara decision.

The only outcome that would surprise me is a Lara KO, because although he is a powerful puncher and counter puncher with good speed and angles, I think Canelo will be able to withstand his hard blows and even come forward through them at times.

The two reasons why Canelo will beat Lara

canelo898999By Bakary “Deus Ex” Sanou: Over the past few days you have probably read everywhere that people were picking Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) to upset Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) or at least saying that it’s a 50-50 fight. Here are the 2 reasons why this is not true.

1. Canelo is the A-side fighter

The A-side fighter is the one who has the ability to pick his opponent. For example, Floyd Mayweather Jr has always been the A-side fighter – except against Oscar De La Hoya. I could talk about the fact that the A-side fighter can choose: the place, the size of the ring, the gloves, the referee and the judges. But I rather focus on a simpler thing:
