By Adam Mccoy: On May 30th Frankie Gavin (22-1 13KO) has been given a shot at the IBF welterweight title against current champion Kell Brook (34-0 23KO). Nobody quite knows how Gavin got the fight other than the fact they are both promoted by Eddie Hearn.
Although the fight appears to be a mismatch anything is possible in this sport as Badou Jack showed us on Friday when he defeated Anthony Dirrell in what was supposed to be a warm up fight before George Groves.
By Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans are hoping that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) will finally step it up a level after he gets his voluntary title defense against #5 IBF Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) out of the way on May 30th at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Fans want to see the 28-year-old Brook fight someone along the lines of Keith Thurman or Marcos Maidana in order to see if Brook even rates to be a belt holder in the 147 pound division, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Brook is talking about him possibly fighting Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) or 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) in the summer.
You can forget about Marquez facing Brook because I don’t see that happening. Marquez has had a knee problem since his fight against Mike Alvarado last year in May, and I don’t expect him to be ready to fight for a world title by the summer.
By B.G.B: Kell Brook will be making a quick return to the ring to defend his IBF welterweight strap against the world famous Frankie Gavin. Not the announcement boxing purists were hoping for I’m sure. What makes this announcement so underwhelming is the heavy criticism rival Amir Khan has received after his own underwhelming announcement that he’ll be fighting Chris Algieri.
Kell Brook was left scratching his head at Khan’s decision and understandable so. Khan turned down a career high pay day in front of what would have likely been a record British crowd for a word title in the best division in boxing. In what world could that possibly be the right decision?

It’s a no-brainer move by Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn from the Matchroom Sport stable because the 29-year-old southpaw Gavin is one of Hearn’s Matchroom stable fighters, and it’s a nice little in house stay busy fight. But unless Hearn does something with Gavin, I think he’ll wind up not being useful to him if he keeps losing.
By Scott Gilfoid: As I mentioned previously, #5 IBF Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) is on the verge of getting a fight against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) on May 30th at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Gavin will be the replacement for Amir Khan, who chose not to take the fight against the 28-year-old Brook due to him not being a big enough name in the United States for the fight to be worthwhile to him.
With no other real options for Brook to fight in terms of recognizable fighters that would interest British boxing fans, Hearn is leaning in the direction of putting Brook in with Gavin for the May 30th date.
By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says that #5 IBF, #12 WBA, #14 WBC Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) is a possibility as an opponent for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) for his next fight on May 30th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
Hearn is trying to put together a fight between Gavin and former two division world champ Tim Bradley in an IBF 147lb eliminator bout next. But if that fight doesn’t take place, Hearn says that Gavin is certainly a possibility for Brook’s next fight.
