Rees refuses to look at Broner during face-off at weigh-in

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: In a telling sign for what we’ll be seeing tomorrow night in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) flat out refused to look WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the eyes when the two came together for a face off at the weigh-in.

Not only did Rees refuse to look at Broner, but he didn’t even face him in the traditional sense. Rees turned sideways, as if to escape the menacing stares from the intimidating Broner. To say that Rees looked scared was putting it mildly. He looked downright frightened to the extreme.

Kellerman: Broner is a huge favorite over Rees because he’s special

broner62By Scott Gilfoid: HBO analyst Max Kellerman doesn’t think WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner is a huge favorite over Welsh fighter Gavin Rees due to Rees being a limited fighter, but rather because Broner is just so talented right now that he’s head and shoulders over the rest of the lightweight pack.

Kellerman said to I Film London “He’s [Rees] a good fighter, and the odds, which are absurdly wide over here, as much as 80-1 at some point, is a reflection more of what they think of Broner than what they think of Gavin. People think Broner is a special kind of fighter, and I think the odds reflect that over here. He can fight, Gavin Rees can fight…The way Broner, it was one of the most thorough beatings you’ll see a top fighter.

Broner with few fight options after he dismantles Rees

broner9282By Scott Gilfoid: As long as WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner chooses to stubbornly stick it out in the lightweight division, he’s going to have very options for interesting fights after he obliterates his latest over-matched opponent Gavin Rees on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Broner knows that he doesn’t have anyone to fight at 135, yet he claims he’s still young at 23, and there’s no reason for him to be in any rush to move up.

Broner’s immediate options after the Rees fight is for him to face the winner of the March 16th fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns vs. IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez.

Rees: I want to smack Broner in the mouth

broner3By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) has let everyone know exactly how he feels about his over-matched opponent Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) by pretending he doesn’t know his name.

In other words, Rees is so badly out of his class in this fight that Broner won’t even bother to mention his name. That’s more of a message to Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy then it is about Rees. I mean, they’re the ones that set up this horrendous mismatch in the first place.

Adrien Broner: By the end of the year I’ll be a PPV star

broner563By Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans had better enjoy seeing the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on regular HBO broadcasts while they still can because by the end of 2013 they may be having to pay to see Broner on pay per view on HBO, at least that’s what the 23-year-old Broner is saying.

Broner said to thaboxingvoice.com “By the end of the year I’ll be a pay per view attraction.

If this turns out to be true then Broner will have be way ahead of what Floyd Mayweather Jr. accomplished when he first became a PPV attraction. For Mayweather Jr, he didn’t become a PPV star until his 11th year as a pro when he fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. It was that fight that made Mayweather Jr. a big PPV star, and he’s been on PPV ever since.

Watt: Rees will give Broner problems

rees4By Scott Gilfoid: Sky Sports analyst Jim Watt believes Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) is capable of giving WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) problems on Saturday night in their HBO televised fight from Atlantic City, New Jersey. Watt thinks Rees is good at dealing with bigger fighters, and giving them problems with his heavy pressure. Rees and Broner are both the same size in this fight at 5’7”.

Watt said to Sky Sports “He [Rees] has a style that would give smooth boxers problems, as smooth boxers like to do things at their own pace. Fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. don’t like pressure. Rees can at least give Broner a real test and create some problems.”

Broner: Won’t ever fight Mayweather Jr; he’s #1 while he’s around

BronerReesNYPC_Hoganphotos(5)(Rich Kane – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten WBC lightweight champ Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) says he won’t ever look to fight his hero Floyd Mayweather Jr. because he’s like family to him. Broner looks up to Mayweather in a big way, and he would never seek out a fight with him even though it would create huge, huge money. It might soon even eclipse the money that Mayweather Jr. could get against Manny Pacquiao if Pacquiao keeps losing.

Broner said to espn.go.com “We won’t ever fight, that’s a big brother, that’s my big brother. I don’t fight family. I wouldn’t fight family, no. I pay homage, Floyd is still in the game but after Floyd, it’s Adrien Broner. In this era, I’m number one. As long as Floyd Mayweather is still in the game, it’s only right, he’s number one.”

BronerReesNYPC_Hoganphotos(Rich Kane – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for the BADLY over-matched Welsh fighter Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s), sees Rees coming out of his fight this Saturday night against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) smelling like a rose.

Hearn actually believes Rees is going to be invited back by HBO to be televised even if he loses to Broner. Hearn thinks Rees is going to give Broner so many problems that he’ll come out of the fight winning over HBO and many American boxing fans with his fighting style.
