Broner: I would have had to hurt Rees bad if they didn’t stop the fight

broner46By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) was pleased that Gavin Rees’ trainer Gary Lockett decided to stop the fight last Saturday night after Broner had knocked the Welsh fighter to the canvas in the 5th and was teeing off on him.

Lockett decided he didn’t want to let Broner annihilate the badly hurt Rees, so he threw in the towel to have the fight stopped.

Broner said to ESPN “They stopped it at the right time because I would have had to hurt him bad.”

It’s really good that Lockett stopped the fight. I know a lot of boxing fans thought it was a quick stoppage, and I know some boxing fans wondered if Rees even came to win. I agreed with the move by Lockett because it would have gotten much worse had Rees been able to make it out of that round.

Hearn: Broner-Rees probably sold less than 2,000 tickets

broner6664By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport Promoter Eddie Hearn sounded disappointed with the turnout for the fight between his fighter Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) and WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Rees was blown out in five one-sided rounds before Ree’s trainer Gary Lockett sailed a white towel into the ring in the 5th to save his fighter when Broner was really giving it to him after having knocked him down with a beautiful left hand to the body.

The next day, a not so happy-sounding Hearn complained bitterly about the U.S crowd turnout for the fight not being big, which Hearn estimates that there were less than 2,000 tickets sold. There’s no doubt those would be horrible numbers for a star like Broner if true.

Broner-Rees seen by 1.4 million viewers on HBO

broner874By Scott Gilfoid: HBO may have lost Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Showtime/CBS this week, but they have a capable replacement with the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s), who drew monster numbers for his fight against the UK’s Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Those numbers weren’t because of Rees that’s for sure because few U.S fans had ever heard of him. Rees was seen by many as just another lamb being led to the slaughter for Broner.

The Broner vs. Rees fight was viewed by an incredible 1.4 million viewers on HBO with a peak of 1.551 million, according to Steve Kim. Wow, that is very impressive. Broner is tentatively scheduled to fight on Mayweather’s undercard on May 4th. It’s unclear if that’s going to happen because Broner is fighting for HBO, so my guess is that’s going to keep him being able to fight on the card.

Hearn: HBO & American fans loved Gavin Rees’s performance against Broner

broner67By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Gavin Rees, is under the impression that Rees wowed HBO and the American boxing fans with his 5th round TKO loss to WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn believes HBO and the U.S fans came away impressed with Rees’ performance in getting dropped twice by Broner, and having his trainer pull him out quickly in the 5th round when things were looking bleak for Rees.

Hearn said to I Film London “Already we’re hearing HBO and American fans ‘Oh, we love Gavin Rees. We’d love to have him back. So that opens plenty of doors.

Rees to fight for another world title before end of 2013, says Hearn

broner888By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees’ promoter Eddie Hearn is confident that Rees will be getting another world title shot by the end of 2013 against one of the lightweight champions. Hearn says Rees will be back in the United States fighting because they were so impressed with his performance in getting stopped in the 5th round last Saturday night by WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner on HBO television.

Hearn said to Sky Sports “Gavin’s performance won him many admirers in America. He is a true warrior and we have already been approached about further fights in the U.S in early summer…the plan is to pick up another world title shot before the end of 2013.”

Broner & Mayweather: Does Adrien have the good and the bad of the great Floyd?

broner534By Rusty Nate: So after the weekend’s action I thought I would put pen to paper and just give an evaluation of Adrien Broner’s performance against Gavin Rees. It is no secret to anyone that Broner clearly modals his skills and boxing style around Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Is that a bad thing? Not at all! He does it very very well and the weekend simply proved that even more so. It was certainly a better impression of Mayweather than Berto managed in his contest with Guerrero recently.

A lot of critics have speculated that Broner does not fight the full 3 minutes of every round. They seem to see that as a negative point in his style.

Rees: Broner is too good for Ricky Burns

broner333By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-2, 18 KO’s) took a beating last Saturday night in a 5th round TKO loss to the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Now that Rees is out of the way, Broner is targeting another UK fighter, this one WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s).

Rees has spent time sparing with Burns in the past, and after facing Broner last Saturday night, Rees doesn’t give Burns any chance of beating Broner.

Broner is a Mayweather Jnr in the making

broner56By Babatis Banda: Looking at WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) fight, you will not miss the semblance to Floyd Mayweather junior’s style. So far, he is the only fighter that has come close, style-wise to the great P4P king. Not only is he talented like Floyd, he is proving to be a mouth-full as well. While I find nothing wrong with the kind of brush-talk that Broner engages in, I hope that just like Floyd, he also lives up to his hype each time he fights and so far, so good.

There is no doubt that Broner is a budding star. It is going to be very difficult to steal his shine just like that. This is now the moment for haters who have no regard for talent. The usual sadism has quickly shown its ugly face in the face of Broner’s recent and impressive successes.

Hearn: There was nothing Rees could have done to beat Broner

broner874By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Eddie Hearn realized early on last Saturday night that his boy Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) was in a hopeless situation in his unwinnable fight against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s).

Hearn saw that Broner was just going to be too strong, too talent, and too fast for his fighter Rees, and he was happy when Rees’ trainer Gary Lockett made the decision to have the fight stopped in the 5th round shortly after Rees had been dropped by a vicious left hand body shot by Broner.

Lockett could have kept Rees out there, but the way that Broner was dominating him there really wasn’t any point in leaving him out any longer.

Rees: Broner’s power stunned me

broner001By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) was literally in awe of the amazing power of WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) after being knocked out by him in the 5th round on Saturday night. Rees later said he’d never been hit like that before in a fight, and he was impressed and hurt at the same time.

Rees said “I knew he hit hard, but his power just stunned me…He’s the best I’ve ever been in with.”

Just so people know, Rees has sparred with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns several times in the past, so when Rees is saying that Broner is the best fighter he’s ever been in with, he’s obviously referring to even in his training as well.
