De La Hoya Retires: Hatton Can Kiss Goodbye Any Dreams of Fighting Oscar

hatton573577679By Chris Williams: All I can say is ‘you blew it, Hatton.’ With Oscar De La Hoya effectively calling it quits on his boxing career, any chances that Ricky Hatton had to fight him went straight out the window with Oscar’s retirement. What’s so funny and yet so sad at the same time is that Hatton had a chance to fight De La Hoya, but passed it up for the chance to fight Paulie Malignaggi of all people.

Roy Jones Jr. to Fight Lacy?

jones4448By Jason Kim: After watching former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy struggle to win a 10-round majority decision over Otis Griffin recently, I figured that Roy Jones Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) would have lost any interest that he ever had in fighting Lacy. However, according to an interview from Jones Jr. at Boxingtalk, Jones said “Jeff Lacy told me he wants to make this fight in Tampa and I think we’re going to make it happen.”

De La Hoya: Deserves Your Respect

dela4527By Matthew Thomas Potter: Oscar De La Hoya’s legacy is fundamentally about two things. Firstly it’s about sporting achievement and excellence. Ten world titles at six different weights and a resume that reads like a who’s who of the boxing A-list is an epic and unparalleled achievement in the sport.

De La Hoya Retires – Don’t Expect the Retirement to Last Long

dela11223317By Sean McDaniel: Oscar De La Hoya finally pulled the trigger on his sinking career today by announcing his retirement in a press conference at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles. De La Hoya had been kicking around the idea of retirement since being defeated by Manny Pacquiao in December when De La Hoya was stopped in the 8th. The loss seemed to really effect De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs), sending him in isolation for a period of time after.

De La Hoya to Make an Announcement About His Career Today: Let’s Hope Oscar Retires

delahoya3224By Dave Lahr: Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) plans on giving a statement today about his boxing career at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles. The hopes here is that De La Hoya makes the right decision and chooses to retire rather than continue on with his career. At 36, it’s high time that Oscar fades away into oblivion and takes his many millions with him. It’s not that he wasn’t a good fighter at one time, but that was a long time ago and he hasn’t looked good in ages.

Hatton Won’t Be Fighting Khan

hatton423453By Eric Thomas: In news that will surely disappoint boxing fans of Amir Khan (20-1, 15 KOs), the word is that former light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs) will never fight Khan, a personal friend of his. The thought of Hatton one day fighting Khan has been kicked around by some ever since Amir won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics for Britain.

Pacquiao Voted Fighter of The Year, Calzaghe Comes In Second

pac4354643By Manuel Perez: In a bit a wacky voting, Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 KOs) was voted as fighter of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America, and an even worse selection was Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs who came in at number #2 in the misplaced voting. There’s not many reasons I can think of to give Pacquiao the fighter of the year, because after all, who did he beat?

Calzaghe Not Interested In Hopkins Rematch

cal56234523231By Scott Gilfoid: I can’t say I was surprised to hear that Joe Calzaghe wasn’t interested in coming out of retirement for a rematch with Bernard Hopkins. Apparently, Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer had hopes of luring Calzaghe out of retirement for a match against Hopkins, who badly wants a shot at avenging his 12-round split decision loss to Calzaghe in April 2008.
