Yudel Jhonson defeats Norberto Gonzalez

jhonson4(Photo credit: Andy Newman) By Jim Dower: In a battle of aging 2nd tier junior middleweights, 33-year-old southpaw Yudel Jhonson (16-1, 9 KO’s) defeated 33-year-old Norberto Gonzalez (20-4, 13 KI’s) by a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision last Friday night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York, USA. The final judges’ scores were 97-91, 97-91 and 97-91. With the victory, Johnson captured the vacant WBC FECARBOX light middleweight title.

Jhonson knocked Gonzalez down with a straight left hand to the head in the 5th. In the 9th, Jhonson knocked Gonzalez down with another left to the head.

As good as the win was for Jhonson, it really wasn’t a big deal because he wasn’t facing a top contender at 154. It’s easy to look good when you’re not in with someone that has the skills to compete.

Lara-Molina fight to a draw, Jhonson stops Gutierrez

By Jim Dower: In an all around disappointing fight, unbeaten junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (15-0-1, 10 KO’s) struggled to a 10 round majority draw with Mexican Carlos Molina (17-4-2, 5 KO’s) on Friday night at the Cosmopolitan Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 97-93 for Molina, 95-95 and 95-95.

By Jim Dower: Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (3-0, 3 KO’s) easily recorded his third second consecutive knockout with a third round stoppage victory over 39-year-old Brazilian GIovanni Andrade (60-12, 49 KO’s) on Friday night at the Fountainbleau Hotel, at Miami Beach, Florida. Rigondeaux, 28, knocked Andrade down in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Boxing Results – Rigondeaux Destroys Guillen, Johnson Decisions Paulo

By Eric Thomas: Two-time Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (2-0, 2 KO’s) made short work of American Robert Guillen (4-3) on Friday night, stopping him in the 1st round at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rigondeaux, 28, a super bantamweight prospect, timed a punch from Guillen, hitting him with a perfect left hook to the body late in the 1st round to send Guillen down on the canvas. Guillen laid on the canvas in pain afterwards and was unable to get up from the knockdown. Referee Kenny Bayless then called a halt to the bout at 2:57 of the 1st.
