By William Mackay: IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KO’s) was at ringside to watch World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) put away number #1 WBA contender Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KO’s) in the 6th round last Saturday night the Hard Rock Café, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alexander, 23, had this to say in an interview by Greg Leon of Boxing Talk, “I was very impressed with Maidana’s performance. He’s a straight up beast, but I’m telling you right now, I will tame him.”

Kellerman: Roach wants Khan to avoid Maidana
By Eric Thomas: HBO analyst Max Kellerman gave a mini speech at the end of Saturday’s broadcast between WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) vs. Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In that fight, Maidana walked through a storm of punches from Cayo in the first five rounds to end the fight suddenly in the 6th round with a powerful right hand to the body of Cayo that put him down for the count.

By Chris Williams: World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) was too strong for previously unbeaten Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KO’s) stopping him in the 6th round on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the 6th round, Maidana landed a short right hand to the midsection of Cayo, causing him to fall to the canvas in pain. Referee Joe Cortez stopped the bout at 1:38 when it became clear that Cayo wasn’t going to be able to make it up from the knockdown.

Although Maidana has received a lot of favorable press since stopping top contender Victor Ortiz in the 6th round last year on an HBO televised bout, it’s hard to say how good Maidana really is. He looked really powerful in that fight, showing heavy pressure, great power and an ability to get up off the canvas and fight hard after being hurt.

The card will have a rematch between lightweights Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman, who will be fighting for the IBF lightweight title. Also on the card will be middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (18-0, 15 KO’s) going up against Jose Miguel Rodriguez Berrio (20-4, 12 KO’s) in an eight round bout.

In press release sent out yesterday, the 26-year-old WBA light welterweight interim champion Maidana said this about Khan: “He will not be able to resist my power, and if he is, then I am prepared to win on points. Khan wouldn’t like to face me at this moment. That shows his intelligence.” Gosh, I have to agree with Maidana.

By William Mackay: Next month, number #2 ranked WBA lightweight contender Victor Cayo (24-0, 16 KO’s) will be fighting World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. At stake is the 26-year-old Maidana’s spot at the WBA interim champion, but even more than that, the winner would stay in line to get an eventual shot against WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (22-1, 16 KO’s).

Instead, Maidana, 26, will have to be satisfied with facing unbeaten light welterweight contender Victor Cayo (24-0, 16 KO’s) on March 27th. And provided that Maidana beats Cayo, and Khan defeats his next opponent Juan Manuel Marquez in May, there’s a chance that Maidana can get his wish for a fight against Khan later on in 2010.

Maidana, 26, was supposed to be facing WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan next. It’s being reported in the news in the Dominican Republic where Cayo lives that he will be facing Maidana next.
Boxing Results – Cayo outclasses Diaz, Rossy Defeats Drumond
By Jim Dower: Undefeated light welterweight contender Victor Cayo (23-0, 15 KO’s) easily defeated former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Julio Diaz (36-6, 26 KO’s) by a 10-round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. The final judges’ scores were 97-93, 96-94 and 98-92. Cayo, 24, ranked #3 in the IBF light welterweight division, toyed with the former champion Diaz for 10 rounds, hitting him pretty much at will and showing a lot of different looks to his offense.
