Kovalev in Limbo: Why He Won’t Win His Homecoming Fight

kovalev5555By By Darmuid Sherry: For 6 months during the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, Sergey Kovalev was one of the hottest worldwide boxing attractions. Heavily promoted by HBO, Kovalev was gaining the attention not only of boxing fans, but of casual sports fans.

That successful period came after a short spell where Kovalev’s career was stuck in no-mans land, when a mouth watering unification clash with lineal 175lbs Champion Adonis Stevenson failed to materialize.

Kovalev: I’m ready to kick Adonis Stevenson’s a–!

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Last night, WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) trounced #9 WBC Tommy Karpency (25-5-1, 14 KOs) by a 3rd round knockout in a mismatch at the Ricoh Coliseum, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was a fight that probably should have been never made, but unfortunately the match-making for Stevenson has not been all that great since he won the WBC title in 2013 after beating Chad Dawson.

Kovalev v Beterbiev and amateur/pro rivalries

kovalev5555By Gav Duthie: Before the year is out we are likely to see two rivalries rekindled from all the way back to the amateur days. Top ten pound for pound star Sergiy Kovalev 28-0-1 (25) has been cutting through his opposition with ease but climbing the ranks is former amateur rival Artur Beterbiev 9-0 (9) who claims to have ‘Krusher’ Kovalev’s number.

Beterbiev bested Kovalev twice as an amateur and is eager to repeat that success possibly on November 28th. Also in the UK Anthony Joshua 13-0 (13) can’t shake his past amateur defeat to Dillian Whyte 14-0 (11) where he was knocked down and outpointed. If he can get past Gary Cornish on Sept 12 he should face Whyte in November or December. This piece discusses some of the best former amateur to professional rivalries of the past.

Ward doesn’t have the power to handle Kovalev, says trainer John David Jackson

kovalev5555By Dan Ambrose: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) had better start working on his punching power if he’s serious about fighting IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) in 2016.

Kovalev’s trainer John David Jackson sees the 31-year-old Ward as too flawed and too weak for him to be able to hold the hard hitting Kovalev off of him for long. Jackson has been studying Ward’s game for a while now, and he sees four basic flaws in his game that will get him knocked out if/when he steps inside the ring with his fighter Kovalev.
