All roads lead to Canelo v Cotto

canelo992By Kieran Stapleton: “The temptation for greatness is the biggest drug in the world.” Mike Tyson. Two men in the sport of boxing who have acclaimed outstanding reputation for self- achievement and reward are Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, when opportunity arose to cement their names in boxing history against the current face of boxing, both men came up short.

So can greatness be achieved after such a big loss? Cotto fought the hard way to gain his reputation in the boxing world after his first loss to Antonio Margarita in 2008 and now Canelo must do the same. Cotto will have a make or break fight against Delvin Rodríguez next month with his newly appointed hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach in his corner.

If Cotto is able to defeat the Dominican fighter next month, is it a viable option to avenge his latest loss to Austin Trout in a rematch to regain his reputation or attempt to defeat the more popular fighter who defeated Trout earlier this year coming off the most popular fight in years.

The Boxing News in Brief

canelo76By Ciaran McKinney: What a few couple of weeks it has been for the world of boxing, and it seems there is a new headline to read every day. The last few months have been dominated by the anticipation for “The One,” the showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout. In my my eyes at least, it lived up to expectation and more.

The unbeaten Mayweather more than confirmed himself as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time by systematically breaking down and comfortably beating the so called ‘Next Big Thing’ in the sport.

Beristain says Canelo should have pressured Mayweather more

canelo65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Nacho Beristain thinks former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1.30 KO’s) should have gone all out by applying a ton of pressure on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) last night in an effort to win the fight. Beristain thinks Canelo could have possibly scored a knockdown had he gone after Mayweather in an all out assault from the start of the fight.

Of course, fighting like that would have been difficult for Canelo given that he had to drain down 13 pounds to get to the 152 lb. catch-weight, and knows how much muscle weight Canelo took off during training camp to get to 165 lbs.

Roach interested in Cotto vs. Canelo fight

cotto43By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach is interested in matching his fighter Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the near future if the fight can get made. Roach thinks Canelo is a little flat-footed, slow of hand and not a really big puncher.

Roach feels those are the reasons why Floyd Mayweather Jr. was able to dominate the 23-year-old last Saturday night. Roach felt that if Canelo had more power then Mayweather wouldn’t have been able to stand in front of him the way he did.

Before he can start thinking about facing the red-haired Canelo, Cotto has to get past his next opponent Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) on October 5th at the Amway Center, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Mayweather could make $100 million for Canelo fight, says Ellerbe

floyd784332By Chris Williams: The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez “The One” pay per view card has reportedly broken the all-time PPV record for the most money hauled in for a fight with $150 million and counting with 2.2 million PPV buys. There’s a chance that the card could still break the all-time PPV mark of 2.4 million PPV buys from the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. If it breaks that record it’s possible that the fight will generate over $200 million.

Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe is saying that Mayweather could end up making $100 million if the pay per view sales break 2.4 million. Mayweather is already set to get a guaranteed $41.5 million for the Canelo fight. But with the extra PPV sales above 2 million, he could wind up with an additional $59 million while Canelo could end up with a lot more than the $12 million that he was set to get.

Guerrero: If Mayweather fought me like he did Canelo it would have been a different fight

floyd#44By Dan Ambrose: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero saw last Saturday’s fight between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) and he came away surprised that Mayweather Jr. had spent so much time standing directly in front of Canelo in that fight. Guerrero thinks that Mayweather spotted a weakness in Canelo’s game that make him decide to stand and trade.

Guerrero also said that if Mayweather had fought him like he did Canelo the outcome would have been different between them. Mayweather beat Guerrero by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores 117-111, 117-111 and 117-111 last May in a one-sided fight.
