Golovkin trashes Canelo for fighting Khan

Image: Golovkin trashes Canelo for fighting KhanBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin says he felt bad for welterweight Amir Khan last Saturday night in his 6th round knockout loss to the much bigger WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin said it was a bad fight for boxing because of how much bigger Canelo was.

Golovkin saw the fight as a business fight for Canelo, and he notes that he’s still never beaten a true middleweight before. Golovkin says Canelo’s fights against Floyd Mayweather, Khan, Miguel Cotto and James Kirkland were all against smaller fighters that were not middleweights.

Canelo-Alvarez brings in 600K buys, will Saul avoid GGG now?

1-khan-canelo (5)By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fight against Amir Khan is said to be just a little under 600K, according to the LA Times. The number was a good one considering that Canelo wasn’t facing a big star and he had to do most of the heavy lifting himself with his own star power likely pulling in the fans.

The 600,000 was far off from the 900,000 Canelo brought in against Miguel Cotto last November and the 2.2 million he helped bring in for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. three years ago in 2013. But for Canelo to be bringing in 600K for a mismatch against a pumped up welterweight with a known chin problem in Khan, it’s pretty impressive.

Canelo vs. Khan did under 600K PPV buys on HBO

Image: Canelo vs. Khan did under 600K PPV buys on HBOBy Chris Williams: It looks like last Saturday night’s fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) and welterweight Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) failed to bring in the monstrous numbers on HBO pay-per-view that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya had been predicting. I could have predicted that the Canelo vs. Khan fight would do poor numbers because fans don’t want to see champions handpicking opponents from two divisions below their weight class. Canelo-Khan was just another version of Danny Garcia vs. little Rod Salka.

De La Hoya had been talking about the Canelo-Khan fight bringing in 2 million buys in a fight that would cement the Canelo’s status as the No.1 fighter in boxing. Unfortunately, reality has spoiled De La Hoya’s dreams, as Lance pugmire is reporting the Canelo vs. Khan fight did less than 600,000 pay-per-view buys on HBO.

Team Golovkin wants Canelo fight negotiated ASAP

canelo765555By Dan Ambrose: Tom Loeffler, the promoter for IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs), says he wants the negotiations with the promoters of WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-0-1, 33 KOs) to go as fast as possible so that they can get the fight signed between the two middleweight champions.

Loeffler isn’t going to have the negotiation details leaked to the boxing public. Something like that might be detrimental to the fight getting put together, especially if information is leaked about Canelo and his team insisting on a catch-weight handicap for the fight. It’s considered a given that Canelo and Golden Boy will look for a weight handicap for this fight, even though Canelo hardly needs one.

Arum: Golovkin will KO Canelo, and then Ramirez will get revenge

arun600By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum isn’t giving Golden Boy Promotions flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez any chance of beating K2 Promotions middleweight Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin when the two of them face each other eventually.

Arum thinks Golovkin will KO Canelo because he feels that Golovkin is just too good for him. Arum says that after Golovkin dispatches Canelo, he’ll match Triple G against his fighter WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs), and he’ll get revenge by beating Golovkin for the Mexican fans.

“We’re building to that fight [Gilberto Ramirez vs. Gennady Golovkin]. After Triple G knocks out Canelo, then Zurdo will get revenge for the Mexican people,” said Arum to Fighthype.com.

Canelo-Khan = Assault in the Ring

1-alvarez-canelo-khan (11)By Alan Garcia: On May the seventh HBO blatantly displayed assault and battery on national television. When did a live massacre turn into entertainment? Has society still not evolved since the time of the gladiators? Clearly not when they still allow for such brutality to be displayed on a pay-per-view event. I didn’t pay to see a morbid event like most casual viewers that consider this “entertainment,” I paid to see Amir “KING” Khan. A man with balls of steel like his, going into the pits of hell and against all odds, against oblivion, deserves my support and respect.

Life is already tough as it is with full of ups and downs. My love for boxing is ironically a symbol of my compassion for humanity and for the sacrifices of these men that go unnoticed. The sport of boxing is a good if not the best physical example to a metaphor of life.

Roach says Pacquiao vs. Canelo offered to him

roach65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach said he was asked by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum if Manny Pacquiao could fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Roach said he wanted to see how Canelo did against welterweight Amir Khan first before he made the decision in the Pacquiao-Canelo fight.

Now that Roach has seen Canelo’s fight last Saturday night, he didn’t see anything in his game that Pacquiao couldn’t handle as long as he stays disciplined for 12 rounds. Roach says he had Khan up five rounds to zero at the time that Canelo knocked Khan out in the 6th round.

Roach says a fight between Pacquiao and Canelo can get made if they get Canelo to agree to a rehydration limit that would keep him from weighing more than 165lbs on the day of the fight. This is the only way a fight between Canelo and Pacquiao can be fair, says Roach.

Roach says Canelo-Golovkin needs to marinate more

roach762By Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for Miguel Cotto, says the proposed mega-fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin needs more time to marinate so that it can become a bigger fight. Roach thinks it’s a good idea for Golovkin and Canelo to fight on the same card against other opponents so that their fight can be built up more to make it bigger.

Roach doesn’t say how there would be enough money to put Canelo and Golovkin on the same card, as both are headliner type fighters at this point in their careers. Golovkin would obviously need to be second fiddle to Canelo, and that might not be a good idea if you’re Golovkin.

“Roach says might be best idea to put both @GGGBoxing and @Canelo on separate fights in next card to build the fight up,” said Lance Pugmire of the LA Times on his Twitter.

Sulaiman: Canelo-Golovkin loser will have future opportunities

Image: Sulaiman: Canelo-Golovkin loser will have future opportunitiesBy Patrick McHugh: It’s very difficult to believe that Golden Boy Promotions will let their prized Golden goose Saul “Canelo” Alvarez really face interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in this next fight. World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman has said this past week that he will enforce the agreement the two fighters have in place for the two of them to fight each other for the WBC middleweight title that is currently in Canelo’s possession.

If Canelo decides he wants no part of fighting Golovkin because he won’t agree to the offer that is made to him, then Canelo will need to vacate the WBC title or else it’ll be stripped from him.

Canelo – Khan replay this Saturday, May 14 on HBO

1-alvarez-canelo-khan (2)By Patrick McHugh: For boxing fans wanting to see a replay of the Amir Khan vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez clash from last Saturday on HBO PPV, it can be seen this Saturday night on May 14 on HBO Sports World Championship Boxing. The Canelo-Khan start time will be at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The fight was a good one for Canelo because his start power increased with his highlight reel knockout over the 29-year-old Khan. Canelo felt good enough about his victory after the fight that he invited IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin into the ring and agreed to fight him at 160lbs instead of asking for a catch-weight of 155lbs.
