Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight hurts potential GGG match

Image: Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight hurts potential GGG match

By Dan Ambrose: It’s generally agreed that the fight the boxing world wants to see is Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September 2017. That’s the fight that the fans have been talking about for the past year, and it’s the number 1 fight in all of the sport. However, with Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy looking to take a detour by fighting the still popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6, they could be ruining the chances for a much bigger fight between Canelo and GGG next year.

The reason why is simple. Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. is going to make truckloads of money for both fighters with it likely pulling in more than 1 million buys on HBO pay-per-view, and potentially selling out the 80,000 seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Image: Chavez Sr. says Canelo vs. Julio Jr. will break records

By Eric Baldwin: Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is pretty excited about a potential record-breaking fight between his son former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs). The negotiations are going on for a fight between the two Mexican stars on May 6 at a still determined location in the United States. The weight for the fight will be at catchweight of 165 pounds.

Chavez sees the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fight as one that will break attendance records. For that to happen, it will need to take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. There aren’t any other larger venues than that for the fight to take place in the U.S.

By Dan Ambrose: According to coach Memo Heredia, he will start training camp with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) in early to mid-February to get him ready to make the 165 pound catchweight for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) if the fight gets made for May 6.

Negotiations are still underway between the management of Chavez Jr. and Canelo. Chavez Jr. has been given a $6 million offer that he and his management must make a decision on by this week for them to get the fight against the 26-year-old Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo on May 6.

Plan A for Canelo in 2017: Chavez Jr, Golovkin and Cotto

Image: Plan A for Canelo in 2017: Chavez Jr, Golovkin and Cotto

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) reportedly has two plans for opponents in 2017. His plan A is to fight three times again the following fighters: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto. The second plan is to switch out Chavez Jr. for WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders for May 6, and then stick with Golovkin and Cotto for his second and third fights of 2017.

Chavez Jr. has been given a 1-week deadline to agree to the $6 million offer given to him by Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions. This is a guaranteed offer. Chavez Jr. would also receive a percentage of the pay-per-view money from HBO. Chavez Jr. could wind up with as much as $10 million if the fight brings in over 1 million buys like sources believe it will do.

2017: What is there to look forward to?

Image: 2017: What is there to look forward to?

By Rameez Haider: Before I go into this article, I just wanted to say that I respect everyone’s opinion no matter what race, gender etc. My last article on Amir Khan bought many different opinions but when people start bringing religion into things, I just think it is totally unjustified and quite frankly disgusting. At the end of the day we all love boxing and no matter what your race, religious beliefs etc. we all share that common love of the sport, so please don’t lose sight of the fact that we are here to discuss boxing nothing more nothing less.

Chavez Jr. given 1-week deadline for Canelo fight offer

Image: Chavez Jr. given 1-week deadline for Canelo fight offer

By Dan Ambrose: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has received a reported $6 million offer from Golden Boy Promotions for him to fight Saul Canelo Alvarez on May 6 for a catchweight fight at 165 pounds on Cinco de Mayo.

It’s now up to the 30-year-old Chavez Jr. whether to accept the offer or not. He has only until next week to agree to it or get out of the way so that Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) can challenge WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) on May 6 instead. Chavez Jr. has turned down huge fight offers in the past, so it’s possible he could turn down this one too.

Canelo’s next fight could be Saunders on May 6

Image: Canelo’s next fight could be Saunders on May 6

By Dan Ambrose: Instead of facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Cinco de Mayo, it’s looking like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) will be back inside the ring against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) on the Mexico holiday on May 6.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy were thinking of him fighting in February, but they don’t want to take a risk with his hand injury that he suffered in his last fight against WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith last September.

Canelo made WBO mandatory for Billy Joe Saunders

Image: Canelo made WBO mandatory for Billy Joe Saunders

By Dan Ambrose: In a predictable move, the World Boxing Organization has installed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) as the No.1 mandatory challenger to WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) in what is clearly a prelude to Canelo challenging for the title in the first quarter of 2017.

Canelo going to the front of the line to get a title shot against Saunders might seem unfair to some fans. Canelo is the WBO 154lb champion and that lets him the WBO 160lb champion as his new mandatory challenger.

Should Golovkin accept Golden Boy’s $15M offer for Canelo fight?

Image: Should Golovkin accept Golden Boy’s $15M offer for Canelo fight?

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has apparently sweetened their original flat fee offer of $10 million to $15 million for IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) to fight their top money maker in their stable Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) in September 2017 in a mega-fight on HBO PPV. While the lump sum offer is increasing for Golovkin from Golden Boy, it still amounts to be just a flat fee and not the percentage deal that GGG and his promoter Tom Loeffler are looking for before they’ll give them their John Hancock signature on a contract.

Golden Boy still insisting Golovkin take flat fee for Canelo fight

By Jeff Aranow: Golden Boy Promotions reportedly still are only offering IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin a flat fee for a fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez, according to Dan Rafael. Golovkin’s management wants at least a 40% cut of the revenue for the fight.

Golden Boy still isn’t offering Golovkin a percentage deal though. It’s a lump fee of $15 million now. How much more money the 26-year-old Canelo will be getting above the $15 million that Golovkin would be receiving for the fight is unknown.
