By Jim Dower: According to the latest boxing news, former IBF/WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) could be facing EBU light middleweight champion Ryan Rhodes (44-4, 30 KO’s) for the vacant WBC light middleweight title in the near future. Margarito, 32, is ranked number #2 in the division, whereas Rhodes, 33, is ranked number #3. The two of them could be on a collision course for the WBC title, which was previously held by Sergio Martinez. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is the current number #1 contender according to the WBC’s rankings, but it’s almost an impossibility that Chavez’s Top Rank promoters will want to put him in with either Margarito or Rhodes, knowing that there would be an excellent chance that Chavez would be soundly beaten by both.

By William Mackay: 32-year-old Ryan Rhodes (43-4, 29 KO’s) pulled off a major upset last night when he stopped champion Jamie Moore (32-4, 23 KO’s) in the 7th round to capture his EBU (European) light middleweight title at the Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire. Moore, 30, was in control of the fight for five rounds, but suddenly seemed to gas out in the 6th round and start taking punishment from the quicker southpaw Rhodes. In the 7th, Rhodes tagged an unsuspecting Moore with a big right hook that sent him down on the canvas. Moore got up and continued to fight back fairly well for the next half a minute.

By Nate Anderson: British light middleweight Ryan Rhodes (42-4, 28 KOs) had an easy time beating a badly outclassed Hungarian journeyman Janos Petrovics (16-24, 8 KOs) by a 7th round stoppage on Saturday night at the Ulster Hall, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Rhodes, 32, knocked Petrovic down with a left to the body in the 7th round. Petrovic got to his feet quickly, but the referee put a stop to the fight right then there, stopping it at 1:07 of the 7th.
