Golden Boy sells Leo Santa Cruz’s contract to Al Haymon

santa cruz677By Dan Ambrose: In a surprising move, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya has reportedly sold the contract for Golden Boy fighter WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17 KOs) to adviser Al Haymon for an undisclosed amount of money, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Santa Cruz, 26, has a large fan base in the United States, and he was still under contract until 2016. Rafael is saying that De La Hoya sold the contract because he was frustrated at being unable to set Santa Cruz up with big names like WBA/WBO 122 pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux due to Haymon, who was already Santa Cruz’s adviser, blocking the fights.

De La Hoya: Mayweather is scared to fight Pacquiao

delahoya454By Dan Ambrose: The Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight is still up in the air at this point with Mayweather still waiting on the HBO-Showtime discussions before he puts his signature on the contract for the fight against Pacquiao on May 2nd.

Pacquiao says he’s agreed to everything that Mayweather has asked for in the contract, but he’s still waiting on Mayweather to agree to his side. Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya, who has no dog in this hunt, sees it as a case of Mayweather being scared of Pacquiao and that’s why he hasn’t hurriedly signed his part of the contract.

Canelo vs. Kirkland is done, says De La Hoya

kirkland22By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says the fight between Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and the one-time popular James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) is a done deal. There still isn’t a specific date for the fight, but it’s well-known that the red-haired Canelo wants the fight to take place on May 2nd, the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

Whether Canelo gets that date depends largely on if Floyd Mayweather Jr fights Manny Pacquiao next or not. The venue for the Canelo-Kirkland fight that is being talked about is the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Matthysse to fight a few more fights at 140, then move up to 147, says De La Hoya

matthysseBy Dan Ambrose: #2 WBC, #2 WBO, #3 IBF light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) will be fighting several more fights at 140 before moving up in weight to the 147 pound division to challenge the top fighters in that weight class, says Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya.

Matthysse, 32, just finished signing a 5-year contract extension with Golden Boy Promotions that is expected to take Matthysse all the way to retirement. It was a surprise move by the Argentinian because it was thought that he would on after his contract expired with Golden Boy to sign up with another promotional company.

Mayweather wants no part of Pacquiao, says Oscar De La Hoya

floyd#83By Sizzle JKD: Here’s the thing, former Lineal WBC, WBA, and The Ring light middleweight champion, former WBO middleweight champion, and current Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya isn’t holding anything back when expressing his sentiments about the much anticipated Floyd Mayweather Jr-Manny Pacquiao clash that is heavily rumored to take place on May 2nd.

De La Hoya, who never shied away from taking on the best challengers in his division and has notable wins over Julio Cesar Chavez, Ike Quartey, Arturo Gatti, Pernell Whitaker, Hector Camacho, and the over-hyped Fernando Vargas, thinks Floyd is simply too afraid to put his undefeated record on the line against Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao.

De La Hoya with several opponents for Canelo to pick from for May 2nd fight

canelo1111By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya was told by his willful fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to break off negotiations with Miguel Cotto on Saturday due to Cotto having missed a deadline that Canelo and Golden Boy set for him to decide on whether he will agree to the contract negotiations that they’d set.

De La Hoya now is looking to find an opponent for the 24-year-old Canelo to fight next. Surprisingly, Canelo is still determined to fight on May 2nd, even if it means competing against a fight as big as Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Cotto.

Mayweather has edge over Pacquiao, says De La Hoya

floyd002By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar de La Hoya is giving the edge to Floyd Mayweather Jr in a fight against Manny Pacquiao if the two of them face each other in the next few months. De La Hoya thinks that Mayweather has more left of his skills right now compared to the 36-year-old Pacquiao, who has looked stationary since his knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.

De La Hoya thinks that Pacquiao would have given Mayweather a run for his money and possibly beaten him three years ago, but right now he doesn’t see that Pacquiao as capable of beating Mayweather, even though Pacquiao is two years younger than him.

Haymon, Arum, Oscar, and Schaefer: Time will tell

delahoya6By Big Moe Elmore: When news broke that former CEO of Golden Boy Richard Schaefer and current Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya had settled their legal battle, blogs, and comments within those blogs fill up within minutes. It was interesting reading the comments. Schaefer, Oscar, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum and manager/advisor Al Haymon all gained and lost some fans. I’m really anxious to see how all this plays out.

Each of these men has brought things to boxing that has either helped or hurt the sport. Let’s face it. There is no way to maneuver in boxing without upsetting people. There are several respectable managers out there such Billy Keane, Cameroon Dunkin and J Prince just to name a few, but fighters continue to sign with Haymon. And with Roc Nation joining the ranks, it’s sure to be interesting. Here’s what we do know and let’s start with the anchor for each of these promotional entities. First Top Rank.

De La Hoya signs Kamegai and Gesta to Golden Boy Promotions stable

guerrero44444By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya beefed up his Golden Boy stable this week in signing 12 decent fighters. Unfortunately, none of the names De La Hoys signed are guys that will likely become a future world champion.

The biggest names that De La Hoya signed was #14 WBC fringe welterweight contender Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22 KOs) and lightweight Mercito Gesta (28-1-1, 16 KOs). It’s difficult picturing either of those guys rising up higher than the No.10 spot in their respective divisions.
