Is Maidana the most popular fighter in the light welterweight division?

Image: Is Maidana the most popular fighter in the light welterweight division?By Chris Williams: It’s strange how things change so quickly in boxing. It was only a matter of a few months ago when World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) was seen as not well known enough to be a good match for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan. How, however, Maidana is not on well known in the United States, but is arguably the most popular fighter in the entire light welterweight division. That’s not taking anything away from excellent fighters like Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley, both of whom have a large following in the boxing world.

In an interview at Boxing Fanhouse, when asked who he will be fighting next after his May 15th bout against Paulie Malignaggi, Khan said “We got Maidana, Victor Ortiz and maybe Timothy Bradley later this year. I want the big names. I’m with Golden Boy right now. The best fights for the best time.”

Bradley vs. Maidana on June 19th – Boxing News

Image: Bradley vs. Maidana on June 19th – Boxing NewsBy Jim Dower: World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) will be fighting knockout artist Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) on June 19th at a still to be determined location, according to news from Boxrec. Thus far, this is easily the best match-up in the light welterweight division for all of 2010. Maidana, 26, is one of the most exciting fighters in the division with explosive power, an aggressive fighting style, and a willingness to take punishment in order to inflict his own brand of two-fisted punishment.

Bradley thinks Maidana will be a “great fight” for him – News

Image: Bradley thinks Maidana will be a “great fight” for him – NewsBy Jim Dower: World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) is looking forward to fighting WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) next. In article by Greg Leon of Boxing Talk, the 26-year-old Bradley says “I was going to fight Abregu, which would have been a dangerous fight. But I guess since he [Maidana] destroyed Victor Cayo, who was a mover, they feel he can deal with anybody. My people were on the horn with Maidana’s people after he stopped Cayo, and I want nothing but the best, and Maidana is a great fight. He established himself with a great win over Victor Cayo. Maidana, after I beat him, Khan will have nowhere to run. Then after I beat Khan, Devon Alexander will probably be my following match.”

Bradley could be facing Maidana next

Image: Bradley could be facing Maidana nextBy Jim Dower: According to news from Dan Rafael of ESPN, unbeaten World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) could be facing WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) next instead of welterweight Luis Carlos Abregu. A fight between Maidana and Bradley would be a sensational bout, much better than a mismatch like Bradley and Abregu. It’s not that Abregu isn’t a decent fighter, because he’s a good welterweight, but he doesn’t bring the same kind of excitement to the ring that the hard punching and aggressive Maidana does.

Alexander, 23, had this to say in an interview by Greg Leon of Boxing Talk, “I was very impressed with Maidana’s performance. He’s a straight up beast, but I’m telling you right now, I will tame him.”

Kellerman: Roach wants Khan to avoid Maidana

Image: Kellerman: Roach wants Khan to avoid MaidanaBy Eric Thomas: HBO analyst Max Kellerman gave a mini speech at the end of Saturday’s broadcast between WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) vs. Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In that fight, Maidana walked through a storm of punches from Cayo in the first five rounds to end the fight suddenly in the 6th round with a powerful right hand to the body of Cayo that put him down for the count.

Maidana too much for Cayo – the win puts more pressure on Khan

Image: Maidana too much for Cayo – the win puts more pressure on KhanBy Chris Williams: World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) was too strong for previously unbeaten Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KO’s) stopping him in the 6th round on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the 6th round, Maidana landed a short right hand to the midsection of Cayo, causing him to fall to the canvas in pain. Referee Joe Cortez stopped the bout at 1:38 when it became clear that Cayo wasn’t going to be able to make it up from the knockdown.

Maidana-Cayo prediction

Image: Maidana-Cayo predictionBy Jim Dower: Tonight, World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) takes on unbeaten Victor Cayo (24-0, 16 KO’s) in a 12 round bout on HBO. Although Maidana has received a lot of favorable press since stopping top contender Victor Ortiz in the 6th round last year on an HBO televised bout, it’s hard to say how good Maidana really is. He looked really powerful in that fight, showing heavy pressure, great power and an ability to get up off the canvas and fight hard after being hurt.
