Victor Ortiz: I’m ready to get my title back

ortiz2By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) will be staging a comeback on January 30th against Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) in a 10 round tune-up bout for the soon to be 27-year-old Ortiz at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Ortiz just finished burning up a year and a half of his career by staying out of the ring since suffering a broken jaw in his fight against light welterweight Josesito Lopez in June of 2012.

Ortiz expects to get his WBC title back, which means he’s counting on getting a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. because he’s the one that has the WBC 147 lb. title in his possession.

Victor Ortiz: For Want of Discipline

ortiz4By Isaac Brodie: With pay per view giants Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao both coming to rest within its ranks the welterweight division has in recent years become the most exciting and most publicized in the sport. And at the high point of his career vicious Victor Ortiz was rated amongst its best. Yet as much excitement and potential as has been seen in this fighter, it has all been periodically tainted by disappointment.

On paper Victor seems to have everything, good speed, great power, decent coordination and footwork. However, all of these gifts have never been seen at their full potential because of a lack of discipline. All fans of the sport are familiar with the Mayweather fight and the manor in which it was ended. Victor was by no means winning the fight prior to its implosion, but he was fighting competitively.

Victor Ortiz v Luis Collazo: Fight Preview

ortiz1By Sevak Sarkisian: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2-22ko’s) will be making his long awaited return to the ring on January 30th at the Barclays center in Brooklyn New York. He will take on fellow former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo (34-5 17ko’s). The fight will be aired live on Fox sports and is an important fight for both fighters.

Victor Ortiz has not fought since June of 2012 and he’s looking to make a strong statement in his return bout by facing a fighter of Collazo’s caliber. Around 2008, Ortiz was regarded as a hot rising prospect in the 140lb division. However, in his first major step up in competition he ended up getting pummeled by Marcos Maidana and chose not to continue in round six. That incident somewhat took the luster out of Ortiz’s potential at the time but it did not stop him from fulfilling his dream of becoming a world champion.

Victor Ortiz in make or break fight against Collazo on January 30th

ortiz33By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC 147 lb. champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) has an important fight coming up next month on January 30th against Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. This is a tune-up bout for Ortiz scheduled for 10 rounds and not 12. Like his last fight a year and a half ago against Josesito Lopez, Ortiz is expected to win this one against Collazo.

The worry here is that if Ortiz can’t beat Collazo, and if he gets beaten or if he quits yet again, for whatever reason, his boxing career may be pretty much done as far as him being a relevant fighter.

Victor Ortiz takes on Luis Collazo on January 30th

ortiz5By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has pulled Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) from the December 14th Showtime card and moved him to January 30th against former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Ortiz-Collazo will be the headliner bout. There still isn’t an undercard yet, but Golden Boy will eventually get to that over time.

This is going to be test for Ortiz, because he’s been beaten in his last two fights by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Josesito Lopez. Golden Boy has backed Ortiz off a little from top opposition by putting him in with Collazo. If Ortiz loses this fight too then Golden Boy will need to take Ortiz back and slowly rebuild him from the very start. He’s missed close to two years of his career due to the broken jaw he suffered in his loss to Josesito Lopez and his subsequent decision to take part in Dancing with The Stars and to act in a Sylvester Stallone movie.

Image: Dzinziruk to fight Collazo on October 2nd, but wants bout with Paul Williams – NewsBy Jason Kim: World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) will reportedly be facing former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo (30-4, 15 KO’s) on October 2nd, according to Fightnews.com. Dzinziruk, 34, is looking to get the big fights in the division, and wants to fight Paul Williams. Since that’s not happening and may not be happening anytime soon, Dzinziruk will now be fighting the 29-year-old Collazo. That’s an interesting pick, because Collazo isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the WBO right now, although he is ranked at number #10 by the WBC in the junior middleweight division.

However, this would actually work out better for the fighters and boxing fans, because HBO is showing a split site card on April 17th involving IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute facing Edison Miranda and WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik facing Sergio Martinez.
