Keith Thurman – Diego Chaves on July 27th in San Antonio, Texas

thurman74By Allan Fox: Next month, undefeated welterweights Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) and Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) square off on July 27th at the At&T Center in San Antonio, Texas for the interim WBA welterweight title. The winner of the fight will be in the position to face the winner of Saturday’s fight between WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner.

For Thurman, this is a dream come true because he would like nothing better than to get a shot at knocking off Malignaggi, who he exchanged words with last March after Thurman’s shutout win over Jan Zaveck, or Broner.

Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves for interim WBA 147 lb. title on July 27th in San Antonio, Texas

thurman43 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: #4 WBA, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) will be fighting #1 WBA, Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) in a battle of unbeaten between fighters with near identical records on July 27th for the interim WBA welterweight title at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The winner of the Thurman-Chaves fight will lock themselves down as the mandatory challenger for WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi. We could see the World Boxing Association give the Thurman-Chaves winner the title at some point in the future if the winner of the Malignaggi vs. Adrien Broner fight next month on June 22nd fails to fight Thurman.

Keith Thurman: Once I get Bradley in the ring it’s all over for him

thurman3By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten #1 WBO mandatory challenger Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) says he’s going to finish off WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (30-0, 12 KO’s) when the two of them meet in the future if Bradley doesn’t get beaten in his next fight by one of promoter Bob Arum’s Top Rank fighters Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, Brandon Rios or Mike Alvarado.

Thurman saw Bradley’s recent 12 round decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov and he feels that Bradley is quite fortunate that he was in the ring with the 5’7” Provodikov rather than himself because he thinks he would have destroyed Bradley had he hurt him the way that Provodnikov did.

Thurman-Chaves & Berto-Soto Karass on July 20th or 27th on Showtime

thurman432By Allan Fox: According to Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions is putting together a big fight card on July 20th or July 27th on Showtime with #10 WBC welterweight Jesus Soto-Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) facing former IBFC/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) and #1 WBO, #4 WBA, #13 IBF, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) battling Interim WBA World welterweight champion Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) at a still to be determined venue.

This is a good card because we’ll find out a lot of things starting with whether Berto has anything left in the tank after having lost two out of his last three fights and looked poor in all three of them. Berto is coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero last November.

Thurman and Berto back in action in July against separate opponents in doubleheader

thurman43By Allan Fox: Undefeated #1 WBO welterweight contender Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) and former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) are expected back in the ring in July against separate opponents in a doubleheader on Showtime, according to RingTV.

Thurman, 24, needs to stay busy while he waits for his shot against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley or whoever holds the bout by the time the WBO forces the issue. Bob Arum of Top Rank will have to make a decision at some point in the future whether he’d rather have the WBO champion defend his title against Thurman or vacate it altogether to avoid fighting the Golden Boy promoted Thurman.

Arum better keep Bradley away from Keith Thurman

bradley12By Dan Ambrose: All I can say after watching WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (30-0, 12 KO’s) go life and death with light welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO’s) tonight is Bradley’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank better make sure that he has Bradley put off facing his mandatory challenger Keith Thurman for as long as possible to further milk his title because once Bradley faces Thurman, it’s going to be pretty much all over for Bradley.

Had that been Keith Thurman in the ring with Bradley tonight, Bradley wouldn’t have seen the 6th round. Thurman would have finished Bradley off quickly. As it was, Provodnikov had Bradley out on his feet in the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 12th rounds.

Thurman: Malignaggi better fight Broner or else he’ll have to fight me

thuman32By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight contender #4 WBA, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) is impatient to get a title shot against one of the welterweight champions after his impressive 12 round unanimous decision win over former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck last Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman thinks the current welterweight champions are mainly just interested in facing smaller guys from the lower weight classes rather than fighting true welterweights like himself.

You can’t disagree with that in some ways because Floyd Mayweather Jr. is fighting a former lightweight, and WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is fighting a light welterweight this Saturday against Ruslan Provodnikov, and WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is facing lightweight Adrien Broner on June 22nd.

Zaveck: Thurman is going to have a great future

thurman3By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten welterweight contender Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) made a fan out of former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (32-3, 18 KO’s) after being him badly in a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night on the Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud undercard on HBO. Thurman hurt Zaveck a number of times in the fight and completely shut him out by the scores of 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108.

Zaveck told ESPN “He was much better than me…I give him my congratulations…He’s going to have a great future.”

Thurman looked great in his third fight on HBO. None of the fights have been close, and he took some criticism after the fight from WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi about his soft opposition.

Thurman and Malignaggi trash talk at post-fight press conference

thurman43By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight contender Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) made the mistake of addressing WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi at Thurman’s post-fight press conference last Saturday night following his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision victory over former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman ended up finding himself on the receiving end of a verbal thrashing by the much better speaking Malignaggi, and I’m sure Thurman now regrets even mentioning Malignaggi.

Thurman: “Hey Paulie, how long you going to duck me, son? What do I have to do to get you to step inside the ring?”

Thurman: I wish Mayweather had beaten Pacquiao two years ago so the hype wouldn’t been created

pac87By Chris Williams: Undefeated welterweight contender Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) says he sees Manny Pacquiao as a flawed fighter, and he wasn’t surprised when Juan Manuel Marquez knocked him out last year in December in the 6th round. Thurman wishes that Floyd Mayweather Jr. had defeated Pacquiao before a couple of years ago in order to stop all the Pacquiao mania that came about.

Thurman said to Maxboxing.com “He’s [Pacquiao] made a real nice career for himself but he is a very beatable fighter…I wished Floyd Mayweather would have beat him two years ago so they wouldn’t have created this hype. And like Marquez told everybody, he’s a little bit smarter.”
