The top four seeds in each division had the pick of the four unseeded boxers in their division to decide on whom each would face.
By Scott Gilfoid: Juergen Braehmer may have made a mistake in pulling out of his fight against Nathan Cleverly last Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Braehmer thought he had an elbow injury.
Braehmer quit on his stool after the 6th round had ended. The injury turned out to be merely a minor muscle tear of his right forearm. The good news is Braehmer won’t need surgery for the injury to be repaired. It’ll heal with rest.
By Rob Maclean: In what was a highly competitive and entertaining light heavyweight match, it was Welshman Nathan Cleverly that re-announced himself on the world scene winning the WBA title. The match was stopped after a conversation between Braehmer and his corner, Braehmer was clearly in distress due to his right elbow. It was in the seventh round that Braehmer threw only straight left hands that indicated something was wrong.
It was an underwhelming result to a very watchable contest. I had mentioned in my preview that Cleverly needed to force the action and could potentially outwork Braehmer, and he put on a worthy display. I felt Cleverly had 3 or so rounds to his name at the time of the stoppage, but it’s hard to disagree that it was Cleverly growing into the fight at that stage.
By Scott Gilfoid: There is some disagreement about where the rematch between newly crowned WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) and former two division world champion Juergen Braehmer (48-3, 35 KOs) should take place in the next three to four months. Cleverly beat Braehmer by a 7th round TKO last Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.
Braehmer, 37, suffered a dislocated right elbow that made it impossible for him to continue fighting no matter how much he wanted to. Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about wanting the rematch to take place in Cleverly’s home country of Wales; whereas Braehmer’s promoter Kalle Sauerland is saying they want the rematch to take place in Germany.
By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer was ahead of Nathan Cleverly on the scorecards at the end of six rounds last Saturday night in their fight in Germany. The fight was stopped unfortunately after the 6th round due to the 37-year-old Braehmer suffering a dislocated right elbow.
At the time of the stoppage, Braehmer was ahead on the scorecards by the scores 58-56, 58-56 and 58-56. I had Braehmer ahead too on my scorecards, and I thought he would have easily won the fight if not for the injury.
Cleverly was throwing a lot of shots, but he lacked the pop in his punches needed to impress the judges. The only way that Cleverly would have been able to climb back into the fight were if Braehmer got tired, which I doubt would have happened judging in how strong the German fighter looked in the 6th round. Braehmer DID NOT look tired in the 6th. He looked cool, calm and collective.

Cleverly’s victory was due to Braehmer experiencing a dislocated right elbow. Without the injury, Cleverly probably would have lost, because he was struggling in the fight. I had Braehmer ahead five rounds to one after six rounds. I gave Cleverly the 1st round, but that’s it. He lost all the other rounds.

By Scott Gilfoid: Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) will be attempting to score a big upset tonight against the aging 37-year-old Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) in Germany. If there was ever a time for Cleverly to beat Braehmer, it would be now with him being older and having gone eight long years in between fighting quality opponents. Braehmer has been feasting on awful opposition since he was whipped by Hugo Hernan Garay. Braehmer will have his World Boxing Association World light heavyweight title on the line tonight.
This long spell of facing weak opposition means Braehmer will be taking a big step up in competition tonight in facing Cleverly, even though he still won’t be facing the cream of the crop in terms of talent at 175. It’s sad but Braehmer will be taking a TREMENDOUS leap up in competition from the horrible opposition he’s been getting fed by his promoters.
By Scott Gilfoid: WBA “regular” light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) weighed in on Friday in coming in at a slim and unhealthy looking 173.1 pounds for his title defense against former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Germany. Braehmer looked almost ill with dark circles under both of his eyes, and he looked older than his chronological age of 37.
Braehmer looked like someone in his 40s. It’s not just because of his thinning hair. Braehmer just looked like someone in his 40s. Braehmer is about to turn 38 on October 5. When you get up there in age, I think some people age rapidly with each year. Instead of it being one year, it’s more like five years for some people. Braehmer did not look like the fresh faced 36-year-old I saw last year at this time when he was fighting an over-matched fringe contender Konni Konrad.
