By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions has put #6 WBA welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) in a situation where he can succeed tonight agaisnt B level fighter Jesus Soto-Karass (26-7-3, 17 KO’s) in their 12 round bout for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental welterweight title.

If Maidana, 29, can’t succeed against Soto-Karass then Golden Boy is going to need to convince Maidana to move back down in weight to the light welterweight division where has a better chance of winning against good competition.

By Allan Fox: Former WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) will be getting a reported $250,000 for his 10 round fight on Saturday night against 2nd tier fighter Jesus Soto-Karass (26-7-3, 17 KO’s) on the undercard of the Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez fight card, televised by Showtime at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What’s really strange is that Maidana, 29, is getting a bigger payday than Josesito Lopez, even though Maidana is longer a champion and there’s no title on the line for the Maidana-Soto Karass fight. It goes to show you how much HBO values Maidana, because the way he fought in losing his last fight against Devon Alexander by a lopsided decision February, Maidana hardly deserves a big payday off of that fight.

Maidana, 29, fought for the first time at welterweight last February and promptly lost badly in a 10 round unanimous decision to Devon Alexander.

Maidana can no longer make the 140 pound weight limit for the light welterweight division. As such, he’ll now be campaigning at 147.
