Roach says he’ll give Provodnikov a fight against Pacquiao if he wants it

provodnikov6By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says that he’ll set WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) up with a fight against Manny Pacquiao if he wants the fight. Roach thinks he can give Provodnikov that match-up if he wants it, but if he does, he wouldn’t have Roach as his trainer because Roach be sticking with Pacquiao and would be in his corner if the two of them squared off.

Roach and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum were hoping that they could continue the never-ending Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez series by getting Marquez to agree to a 5th fight against Pacquiao for November, but with Marquez asking for $20 million to take the fight, they’re now looking at other options such as Provodnikov. Marquez wants a 50-50 purse split for a 5th Pacquiao fight, and it doesn’t look like they’re into giving it to him.

Khan holds too much to get Pacquiao fight, says Roach

khan54By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I guess you can scratch Amir Khan’s name off the list as a potential candidate for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight in November, because Pac’s trainer Freddie Roach says he doesn’t want to put the boxing fans through the ordeal of having to watch Khan holding 24/7 in a Pacquiao-Khan fight.

Roach, who previously trained Khan in the past, likes his hand speed and his combination punching. But he thinks that Khan’s new style of fighting in which he’s constantly holding his opponents would be off putting for the fans if they were dump their good clean cash on a Pacquiao vs. Khan fight.

Roach doesn’t want Cotto-Pacquiao rematch

roach67By Alon Calinao Dy: After the impressive performance of Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto over former WBC champion Sergio Martinez last week at the Madison Square Garden in New York, USA, legendary trainer Freddie Roach does not see any possibilities that both his fighters Cotto and Pacquiao are going to fight for the second time, for Filipino boxing icon to win his ninth world boxing crown.

According to some reports, Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum is trying hard to persuade Mexican boxing legend Juan Manuel Marquez to fight superstar Pacquiao for a fifth time. However, fans say that Marquez is asking for $20 million, which is a huge amount of money that would eventually cut the purse of Pacquiao if he is going to agree to this demand.

Marquez wants $20 million for Pacquiao 5th fight, says Roach

roach564By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is complaining that Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) is asking for $20 million for a fifth fight against Pacquiao in November, and that Marquez’s request is a show stopper. Roach says that a reasonable amount for Marquez to make for the fight is $10 million only, according to thesweetscience.com. But with Marquez asking for $20 million, it means that a fight can’t take place between them.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently said that Pacquiao will be getting around $30 million for his fights. If this is true, it means that there’s a potential $40 million pot of money that can be divided up for a 5th Pacquiao-Marquez fight. If you divide the money equally, then each fighter can walk away with $20 million, and Pacquiao would get his chance of trying to avenge his loss to Marquez.

Roach: Cotto would KO Mayweather now

cotto621By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto’s win over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) has trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum both believing that Cotto is a new man and is better than ever was before. And they both believe that Cotto would beat Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) right now if he were to agree to give him a second fight.

It’s hard to understand why Mayweather would fight Cotto again because he already beat him by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2012, and Mayweather doesn’t waste time going over old ground to keep fighting the same guy over and over and over again like some fighters do. Mayweather moves on each time he picks up a pelt.

Roach thinks Mayweather won’t fight Cotto again

floyd333By Chris Williams: Freddie Roach would like it if Floyd Mayweather Jr. were to move up in weight to challenge his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for his newly won 160-pound title for his next fight, but Roach doesn’t think Mayweather will agree to take a second fight with Cotto, even though Mayweather already proved himself to be the superior fighter to Cotto two years ago.

Roach thinks that with the way that Cotto beat up Sergio Martinez last Saturday, it’ll have Mayweather not interested in tempting fate to get in the ring with Cotto a second time.

“He [Mayweather won’t fight anyone else,” Roach said. When asked if Mayweather will agree to fight fight Cotto at 160, Roach said “I don’t think so. He’ll [Mayweather] come up with some excuse.”

Roach: Martinez was on his bike the entire night

martinez656676By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach got a chance to gloat after his fighter Miguel Cotto’s 10th round TKO win tonight over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) in an upset win at MSG New York. Either Cotto was too strong or Martinez’s surgically repaired knees were too weak. It doesn’t matter. The end result was a one-sided slaughter with Cotto putting Martinez down on the canvas like he was a yo-yo in dropping him 4 times.

Roach said after the fight “He [Martinez] was on the bike the entire night. I’m so satisfied in this win I don’t even want to think about what’s next. He [Cotto] responded well [to being hit by Martinez]. He was never hurt. This is the fight I wanted. He’s maybe one of the best students I’ve ever had.”

Roach: We’ll set traps for Sergio, we’ll catch him

roach234By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach feels that he’s got the perfect plan for Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) to come out victorious tonight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s). And while most of the boxing world sees Sergio as being too big, too talented and too quick for the 5’7” Cotto, Roach says that he’s come up with a strategy for Cotto to be able to catch Martinez by luring him in.

Cotto is terrible at cutting off the ring, so as long as Martinez is moving, Cotto will struggle to land anything at all in the fight. But Roach has a way around that by having Cotto take advantage of Sergio’s aggression.

Roach: Sergio Martinez is going to need a lot of luck against Cotto

roach34By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) will be an underdog this Saturday night in his title fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) in Madison Square Garden, New York, but don’t tell that to Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach. He feels that it’s the 39-year-old Martinez who should be the underdog in this fight because he thinks he’s got the better guy in Cotto due to his training.

Roach’s main contribution to changing Cotto’s fighting technique since taking over as his new trainer last year was to have him throw more left hooks. From appearances, Cotto looks totally unchanged from before. If there is a change it’s so incredibly small that it’s difficult to really detect.

Roach: Cotto will break Sergio Martinez down and get him out of there late

roach6666By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach has changed his knockout prediction for his fighter Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) from scoring a quick knockout in the first 4 rounds to getting one late in the fight this Saturday night in Cotto’s title challenge against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Roach believes that Cotto, with his left hook that he’s now using frequently, will wear the 39-year-old Martinez down until he’s too beaten up to take any further punishment late in the fight.

“I believe Cotto will knock Martinez out late in the rounds,” Roach said. “We’ll break him down and get him out of there.”
