Bundu defeats Gavin; Browne decisions Rudenko

gavinBy Scott Gilfoid: In a fight a lot more one-sided than the scores that were handed down by the three judges, EBU welterweight champion Leonard Bundu (31-0-2, 11 KOs) stayed unbeaten in defeating previously unbeaten British challenger Frankie Gavin (19-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round split decision on Friday night at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, United Kingdom. The final judges’ scores were 114-113, 114-113 for Bundu and 115-112 for Gavin.

Gavin spent much of the fight running, shoving, and holding. When he would throw punches it was weak jabs and left hands without any power on them. Gavin rarely sat down on his punches because he was always on his book foot and looking to escape the pressure that Bundu was putting on him.

Hall-Ward ends in technical draw; Gavin struggles to beat Shikukutu

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF bantamweight strap holder Stuey Hall (16-2-2, 7 KO’s) retained his title tonight after he collided heads with his much smaller challenger Martin Ward (18-2-1, 4 KO’s), causing a cut over Ward’s eye that resulted in the fight being halted just 35 seconds into the 2nd round at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom. The crowd of course hated it and booed loudly. However, it was obvious that a cut was going occur eventually given the way that Ward was coming in heard first like a billy goat.

Frankie Gavin vs. Sacky Shikukutu on March 29th

By Stephen Moffitt: On Saturday the 29th of March, British and commonwealth champion Frankie Gavin (18-0, 12 KO’s) takes on Namibian Sacky Shikukutu (18-2-1, 12K.O’s) at the Metro radio arena in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. When I heard the name to face the the former world amateur champion Frankie Gavin, I have to admit I was pretty disappointed. Yes, Frankie and his promoters are saying the African is tough and rugged and will be a handful for Frankie but when you look at the guys record its clear to see that this will be a total mismatch.

Copper Box undercard

By Rachel Aylett: I suggested in my preview to this show that the undercard flattered to deceive, and so it proved. Aside from the main event, the only truly competitive match was that fought for the Commonwealth super-featherweight title. This saw Liam Walsh defending that title against fellow unbeaten Joe Murray.

Five great Brit fights on the horizon

frampton55By Rachel Aylett: Despite recent setbacks for U.K. boxing involving Nathan Cleverly and Ricky Burns, there are wonderful fights in prospect over the next couple of years. Let’s look at five which may or may not happen.

Super-Bantamweight

Scott Quigg vs Carl Frampton: This is Britain’s own version of Mayweather-Pacquiao, in that it has been talked about and desired by fight fans for a couple of years now. They have been dancing around each other and have both taken their own paths up the world rankings. As it was with Money/Pacman, the consensus opinion as to who would win has changed back and forth over the months. There is still no obvious favorite. Let’s hope this doesn’t reach the point where the fans start saying “who cares?”
