Yoan Pablo Hernandez – Eric Fields on 2/2 in Germany

Steve Herelius, Yoan Pablo HernandezBy Eric Thomas: IBF cruiserweight champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KO’s) will be taking an easy title defense on February 2nd against #12 WBA, #15 IBF, Eric Fields (21-1, 15 KO’s) at the Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, in Berlin, Germany.

Hernandez, 28, has had some tough fights recently in two bouts against Steve Cunningham and his victory against Troy Ross. Somehow Hernandez was able to squeak through those three bouts to get to his first easy fight since his victory over Steve Herelius last year in February.

Fields, 30, kind of disappeared after getting beaten by Ola Afolabi in April 2008. Fields had come into that fight off of the back of an impressive 1st round knockout win over Kelvin David back in January 2008. A lot of boxing were impressed with Fields at that point in his career and many thought he’d beat Afolabi. But Fields had problems with Afolabi’s power and he ended up getting taken out in the 10th round by him.

Fields vs. Afolabi

fields446.jpgBy Tony Krebs: Undefeated cruiserweight Eric Fields (11-0, 9 KOs) will return to action on Saturday night against Ola Afolabi (11-1-3, 4 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout for the little-known vacant North American Boxing Association (NABO) at the Emerald Queen Casino, in Tacoma, Washington. Fields, 21, the 2005 and 2006 National Golden Gloves Heavyweight champion, recently flattened former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin Davis in the 1st round on January 18th, 2008, in a one-sided bout from the opening bell. Fields wasted little time in pouncing on Davis, after studying him for a second; he then proceeded to tag him with a monstrous right that dropped Davis to the canvas.

Upon getting up, Davis was met with a mad horde of punches from the 6’2″ Fields, who hit Davis with everything but the kitchen sink as he gamely tried to cover up on the ropes. After the beating continued on for what appeared to be an extended period of time seeming like minutes, Fields finally connected with a sledgehammer left uppercut that dropped Davis to the canvas face first.

Fields KOs Davis In 55 Seconds

fields4433.jpgIt only took undefeated former two-time U.S amateur champion Eric Fields (11-0, 9 KOs) about a minute to completely destroy Kelvin Davis’ (24-8-2, 17 KOs) hopes of a successful comeback, as the undefeated 25 year-old cruiserweight prospect made easy work of Davis, stopping him in the 1st round on Friday night at the Mallory Square, in Key West, Florida. It was either an act of tremendous bravery on Davis’ part or sheer foolishness by choosing the 6’2″ Fields so soon after Davis, a former International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion, had broken both his back and neck in a freak accident last year in New Zealand.

It was almost as if Davis was looking for problems. Well, Fields didn’t waste any time testing Davis’ chin in the first round, because in the open seconds of the round, Fields let loose with a right hand and knocked Davis down. It didn’t seem like that big of a punch, but due to the size of Field’s and perhaps the fact that Davis had a lot of ring rust, made the punch look much more powerful than it really was. Davis immediately got to his feet, though he looked badly shaken from the punch, and it looked bad for him, for there was almost three minutes left in the round for him to have to try and recover.
