Price needs two more fights before Joshua, says trainer

price1

By Scott Gilfoid: #11 WBO heavyweight contender David Price (20-3, 17 KOs) could be two fights away from getting a world title shot against unbeaten IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, according to Price’s trainer Dave Coldwell. Price, 32, took an easy fight in his last bout in stopping little known Vaclav Pejsar in the 2nd round last May on the undercard of the Tony Bellew vs. Ilunga Makabu card in Liverpool, UK.

That was Price’s first fight in a year. He looked slow and at least 20 pounds overweight. Price plans on stepping it up against a better fighter in his next fight. That might not be a good idea because he was getting nailed by Pejsar, and wound up marked up a little around the face. If a mediocre fighter like Pejsar was able to nail Price with shots, then you have to figure that a better fighter will be able to do a lot more.

David Price wants Anthony Joshua fight in 2016

By Scott Gilfoid: #12 IBF heavyweight contender David Price (20-3, 17 KOs) recently came off a year long layoff to destroy an over-matched 3rd tier fighter named Vaclav Pejsar (9-3, 8 KOs) by a 2nd round knockout last month on May 29 on the undercard of the Tony Bellew vs. Ilunga Makabu card at Goodison Park in Liverpool, England. Will Joshua give Price a mercy fight or will he ignore him?

The victory for the 32-year-old Price has planted some ideas in his head, because he now would like to fight IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, and he believes the fight could take place later this year. I can well understand why Price would want to fight Joshua. The payday for a fight against Joshua would likely be huge for Price if he could get that fight.

Bellew-Makabu, Price-Pejsar & Smith-Reynoso on 5/29

bellew576

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it’s the moment of truth for #6 WBC Tony Bellew (26-2-1, 16 KOs) in him facing #1 WBC Ilunga Makabu (19-1, 18 KOs) this Sunday on May 29 at Goodison Park Stadium, in Liverpool, UK. After toiling away in the cruiserweight division for two years, Bellew, 33, will be fighting for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title against one of the best fighters in that weight class in Makabu.

This is going to be a really tough match for Bellew because he was flopping around like a fish out of water the last time he fought a huge puncher in Adonis Stevenson three years ago in 2013. Bellew could not stand up to Stevenson’s power once he started exchanging punches with him.

In facing Makabu, Bellew will be fighting a guy with better punching power than Stevenson, and it’s going to be tough for Bellew to be able to stand up to his withering power.

David Price vs. Jakov Gospic on 5/29 in Liverpool, UK

price7By Scott Gilfoid: Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (19-3, 16 KOs) will be trying to turn his career around this month against journeyman Jakov Gospic (17-14, 12 KOs) an eight round fight on May 29 on the undercard of the Tony Bellew vs. Ilunga Makabu cruiserweight fight at Goodison Park Stadium, in Liverpool, UK.

Price, 32, has been out of the ring for 11 months since his 2nd round knockout loss to Erkan Teper. Price feels that he doesn’t need to take his career backwards to fight for things like the British title. He sees himself as a top world class fighter in the mix with the other top fighters.

It remains to be seen if that’s the case. The fact that Price was taken out twice by Tony Thompson and once by Teper would seem to suggest that he’s a domestic level fighter rather than a world class guy.

David Price wants Joshua fight later in 2016

price6666By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight David Price (19-3, 16 KOs) feels his previous top 10 ranking with the International Boxing Federation should be reinstated after his last opponent Erkan Teper tested positive for a banned substance. Price, 33, was knocked out in two rounds by the hard-hitting Teper last July in a failed bid to win the EBU heavyweight title, and Price hasn’t fought since then.

At the time, Price was ranked #5 by the IBF. Price wants his old ranking back so that he can be in the running for a title shot against IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in late 2016. It’s hard to imagine Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn opting to match him against Price given the way he was blasted out by Teper.

David Price to fight on 5/29 on Bellew-Makabu card

price456By Scott Gilfoid: The struggling British heavyweight David Price (19-3, 16 KOs) has been added to the May 29th Tony Bellew vs. Ilunga Makabu at Goodison Park Stadium, in Liverpool, UK. The 6’7” Price still doesn’t have an opponent as of yet, but there’s a chance that he could wind up facing unbeaten David Allen (9-0-1, 6 KOs).

Price hasn’t fought since being stopped in the 2nd round by the hard hitting German fighter Erkan Teper last July. Teper later tested positive for a banned substance. Price doesn’t see his loss to him as being legit due to the positive test. Never the less, the way that Price keeps getting knocked out has to make you wonder whether he’s got the chin to succeed in this sport.

It’s hard to believe that just three years ago, Price was being hyped just as much as Anthony Joshua is now. Price was doing just as good as the 6’6” Joshua has been doing. Things fell apart for Price when he was put in with veteran Tony Thompson in back to back fights, both of which Price lost by knockout.

Lucas Browne says Haye is just an attention seeker

browne4333By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I knew it was too good to be true. Contrary to all the stuff David Haye (27-2, 25 KOs) about a potential fight between him and WBA heavyweight champion Lucas Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) being a possibility for his next fight date on May 21, Browne is saying that the 35-year-oldn Haye is full of it.

Browne says he’ll be fighting Fres Oquendo next at some point. As far as Haye’s talk of a fight between them, Browne thinks Haye is just looking to get attention.

David Price expects to fight in April

price456By Scott Gilfoid: 32-year-old British heavyweight David Price (19-3, 16 KOs) will be looking to return to the ring in April with new trainer Dave Coldwell. Surprisingly, it’s been seven months since the 6’8” Price last fought in getting halted in the 2nd round by German heavyweight Erkan Teper last July.

The result of the fight was later changed to a no contest due to the 6’5” Teper testing positive for a banned substance for the fight. Never the less, Price looked terrible in that fight, and it’s hard to see anything positive in the result of the fight being changed. The fact of the matter is Price was still batted around the ring and he still looked over-matched.

The idea is to put Price on the undercard of the super middleweight contest between Callum Smith and Hadillah Mohoumadi on April 2 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

David Price to continue his career

price456(David Price seen here having a bad day at the office against Erkan Teper) By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight David Price (19-2, 16 KOs) just got a shot in the arm for his career with the news that his previous 2nd round knockout loss to German heavyweight Erkan Teper (14-0, 9 KOs) from last July has been changed to a no contest due to Teper testing positive for a banned substance.

The 6’8” Price is reportedly not happy about Teper testing positive for after the fight. The hard hitting 33-year-old Teper has now been reportedly banned for 2 years from the sport.

Price plans on resuming his career and looking to get a fight for the EBU title. It would mean that he’ll need to face newly crowned EBU champion Robert Helenius for the title, which could prove to be a very difficult fight for the fragile-chinned 32-year-old Price.
