By Eric Baldwin: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s WBC mandatory challenger is going to be decided with a 4-man tournament held by the World Boxing Council. This is something the WBC has decided to do during their convention this week. The 4-fighters that will face each other in the tournament are as follows: David Lemieux, Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Ievgen Khytrov and Curtis Stevens. None of these fighters are great choices for Golovkin. Jermall Charlo needs to move up to 160 to give Golovkin a good opponent in near future.

The WBC tournament wouldn’t figure to be a great deal for Heiland, who has been ranked #1 by the WBC for quite some time without getting a title shot. For Heiland to have to fight for the mandatory sport, it creates a hoop to have to jump through.

lemieux51

By Eric Baldwin: Former IBF 160lb belt holder David Lemieux (36-3, 32 KOs) was supposed to impress in his fight against journeyman opponent Christian Fabian Rios (21-8-3, 6 KOs), but instead he labored to a 10 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in front of a large crowd of supporters at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

For his troubles, Lemieux was hurt twice by left hands from the southpaw Rios in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Lemieux ended up with a badly bruised right eye. Rios appeared to win at least two rounds of the fight; although judges gave him no credit for it by scoring the fight 100-90, 99-91 and 100-90.

David Lemieux vs. Cristian Fabian Rios – Official weights

lemieux

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux successfully weighed in at 163 ¾ pounds on Friday for his 10 round fight on Saturday night against Cristian Fabian Rios at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Rios (21-7-3, 6 KOs) weighed in at 163 ¾ pounds. This is an important fight for the 27-year-old former IBF middleweight champion Lemieux, because he’s in the running for a big payday fight against fellow Golden Boy promotions star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in early 2017.

As we’ve seen in the past, Lemieux isn’t one of those types of fighters that can be counted on to win each time he fights. His losses to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine showed that he doesn’t have the stamina or the talent to get by the fringe level guys 100 percent of the tine. Lemieux will win most of the time, but he gets beaten at other times.

Lemieux vs. Canelo possible for early 2017

1-golovkin (9)

By Dan Ambrose: If former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux gets past his fight against little known Cristian Fabian Rios this Saturday night on October 22, he could be facing superstar Saul Canelo Alvarez in the first quarter of 2017, according to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez. He has two scenarios for the 27-year-old Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs), one of the scenarios is Lemieux fighting WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) for his WBO belt.

Gomez also likes the idea of matching Lemieux against Golden Boy’s flagship fighter Canelo. The odds of Lemieux fighting Saunders for his WBO title are extremely low. Saunders wants to fight Canelo or Golovkin. He’s probably not going to be agreeable at all in a fight against a dangerous puncher like Lemieux, even though he might have enough boxing skills to beat him.

Lemieux taking Cristian Rios seriously

Boxing: Golovkin vs Lemieux

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs) is preparing hard for his likely mismatch against little known Christian Fabian Rios (21-7-3, 6 KOs) on October 22 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. This will be the 27-year-old Lemieux’s second straight showcase fight since his 8th round knockout loss to Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last year in October 2015.

Lemieux talked a lot in the build up to that fight, but he didn’t have the talent to hang with Golovkin. Lemieux lost his IBF middleweight title in the Golovkin fight. However, Lemieux is still ranked high at 160 by the #4 WBC, #4 WBO. He’s within striking distance of another title shot, but not against Golovkin.

David Lemieux vs. Cristian Fabian Rios on October 22

By Eric Baldwin: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs) will be continuing with his rebuilding of his career next month against little known 33-year-old Cristian Fabian Rios (21-7-3, 6 KOs) on October 22nd at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The weight for the Lemieuix-Rios fight is reportedly set for 165 pounds.

Lemieux had a fight canceled recently against James De La Rosa after he missed the weight. However, in Lemieux’s last fight against Glen Tapia, he came in at 160. It’s pretty important that Lemieux stay at middleweight, because the bigger fighters are in this weight class, and it enables him to potentially pull junior middleweights up to the division to broaden the pool of opponents.

David Lemeiux vs. Curtis Stevens negotiations stalling out

Image: David Lemeiux vs. Curtis Stevens negotiations stalling out

By Chris Williams: It looks like the much talked about fight between former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux and Curtis Stevens won’t be taking place on October 22 on HBO as boxing fans had hoped. The negotiations between the two fighters have hit a stall, and it appears that the fight won’t be salvaged with help from HBO.

I had a feeling that Lemieux vs. Stevens wouldn’t happen when I first heard of the fight. I could not see Lemieux facing a live body like Stevens, because he’s too dangerous and would likely knock Lemieux into next week.

David Lemieux vs. Curtis Stevens on October 22

Image: David Lemieux vs. Curtis Stevens on October 22

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux will be facing the hard hitting and dangerous Curtis Stevens on October 22 in Montreal, Canada. Lemieux, former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion, is expected to have his fight against Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) announced by his promoters at The Eye of the Tiger Promotions shortly.

Lemieux, #3 WBC, #4 WBO, 7 IBF, was being talked about for a fight against James Kirkland, but that fight won’t be happening. That would have been a far better match-up for the 27-year-old Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs), because Kirkland has fought only once in the past three years and that was his 3rd round knockout loss to Saul “Canelo: Alvarez last year in May 2015.

David Lemieux to fight in October or November

lemieux5

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux will be fighting before the end of this year in October or November, possibly against middleweight contender Curtis Steven (28-5, 21 KOs). Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs) lost his IBF middleweight title to Gennady Golovkin last October in an 8th round knockout loss. Since that fight, Lemieux has come back and beaten ring rusty Glen Tapia by a 4th round knockout last May.

It’s hard to tell if the 27-year-old Lemieux has improved since his loss to Golovkin, because his opponent was too poor to show where he’s at.

Lemieux’s next fight will likely take place in his home city of Montreal, according to RingTV. Lemieux’s promoters at Golden Boy are interested in staging his next fight there. Lemieux is currently ranked #3 WBC, #4 WBO, #7 IBF. He’s ranked high enough for him to soon get another title shot.
