Cotto vs. Geale: According to Miguel a catch-weight is fair

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 15 (2)By Gerardo Granados: The WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto stated in an interview made by ESPN Boxing Analyst Brian Campbell to the question of why was it important to contest the bout against Daniel Geale at a catch weight, that: “I’m not a 160-pounder and I just want to make the game more fair.”

But is it fair to bend the rules? Currently there are only 17 weight divisions and the middleweight division goes from plus 154 up to 160 pounds (plus 69.85 up to 72.574 Kg – plus 11st up to 11 st 6 lbs) and the boxers are allowed to weigh as much as they want between the limit.

Cotto has rematch clause in case Geale pulls an upset

Image: Cotto has rematch clause in case Geale pulls an upsetBy Dan Ambrose:
By Dan Ambrose: Despite this Saturday’s fight on HBO being considered a mismatch by a lot of boxing experts, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 Kos) reportedly has a rematch clause in his contract in his fight against Australian Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Cotto is a big favorite to win this fight, but if Geale somehow pulls off a big upset, we’ll likely see the two fighters doing it again later this year so that Cotto can try and avenge his loss and move forward to take his big money PPV fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2016.

Roach: Golovkin brings too much risk and little reward for Cotto

Image: Roach: Golovkin brings too much risk and little reward for CottoBy Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for WBC 160lb champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), says Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) as being too risky a fight for the 34-year-old Cotto for what he brings to the table in terms of potential money. Roach says that his No.1 fighter Manny Pacquiao recently walked past Golovkin in his Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles without knowing who Golovkin was.

For Roach, that was a big sign that Golovkin isn’t recognizable enough to put Cotto in with him yet. It’s hard to imagine Pacquiao not being able to recognize who Golovkin is because he’s been fighting four times per year on HBO, and you can’t miss him if you follow the sport on American television.

Pacquiao lives in the Philippines, so that might explain why he was in the dark about who Golovkin is. Since the PPV money that Cotto makes is from the American market, Golovkin is a very marketable opponent for him whether Pacquiao knows him or not.

Cotto: I’m fighting Geale because he was biggest name that accepted my terms

YouTube video

By Allan Fox: For a lot of fans they wonder why WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) chose to fight the 34-year-old Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) for this Saturday instead of a bigger threat or a guy with more talent like Gennady Golovkin. Cotto says that Geale was the biggest name who was willing to accept his contract terms for the fight. That’s why he was given the shot.

Just when the Cotto vs. Golovkin fight will take place is unclear, but Cotto himself will the one that makes that decision, not the boxing fans or Golovkin. Cotto will be fighting former IBF/WBA 160lb champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 kOs) this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Geale glad Cotto looking past him

geale422(Photo credit: Hoganphotos/Roc Nation) By Dan Ambrose: With WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) seemingly looking past challenger Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) for their fight on Saturday towards a fight a big money pay-per-view fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Geale believes that Cotto is taking it for granted that he’s going to win this fight.

Geale is both amused and taken aback by one of his opponents overlooking him. Geale acknowledges that he was easily beaten by Gennady Golovkin last year in three rounds, but he doesn’t see Cotto as having the same kind of size and talent that Golovkin possesses.

Golovkin: I look forward to fighting Cotto-Geale winner

1-golovkin3 (10)By Dan Ambrose: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), the fighter who many feel is the legitimate champion in the 160lb weight class, says he’s going to be sitting at ringside this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, to see the match-up between WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Daniel Geale 31-3, 16 KOs).

Golovkin’s name hasn’t been one that Cotto has been mentioning a whole lot lately except when responding to questions from the media.

If Geale comes in over 157lbs, will Cotto cancel the fight?

Image: If Geale comes in over 157lbs, will Cotto cancel the fight?By Dan Ambrose: #6 WBC challenger Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) will be facing WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in a catch-weight fight at 157lbs.

It was a situation where Cotto was the A-side, and if Geale wanted to get the fight, which is arguably the biggest of his 11-year pro career, he had to accept whatever weight Cotto wanted for the fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. But writer Steve Kim brought up a good question when he said this on his Twitter: “If Geale comes in above 157 but below 160, what does Cotto do? Cancel fight? Geale is still a middleweight.”
