Haye: I’m agressive like Corrie Sanders

By Jason Kim: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) sees himself as being comparable to the big 6’4″ southpaw Corrie Sanders, who destroyed Wladimir Klitschko in two brutal rounds eight years ago in 2003, knocking him down three times before the fight was eventually halted in the 2nd round with Wladimir looking out of it. The 6’2″ Haye is shorter than Sanders and not quite as heavy as him.

Corrie Sanders doesn’t know why Wladimir Klitschko never sought a rematch

Image: Corrie Sanders doesn’t know why Wladimir Klitschko never sought a rematchBy Jim Dower: Former WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders (42-4, 31 KO’s) wishes that Wladimir Klitschko had sought to avenge his 2nd round knockout loss to him, and Sanders, now 44, doesn’t understand why Klitschko never tried to avenge his knockout loss to him. In an article at Sportbox.ru, Sanders says “Yes, it would be nice to fight him [Wladimir] again. I do not know why he never wanted a rematch.” Sanders latter on went up against Wladimir’s big brother Vitali Klitschko, who after a shaky start in which he was staggered and almost dropped, came back to batter Sanders to a pulp and stop him in the 8th round in April 2004. Sanders points out that Vitali’s size was too much, saying “But he [Vitali] is so big that it was difficult to beat him.”

Corrie Sanders vs. Machimana On February 2nd

Former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders (42-3, 31 KOs) returns to the ring after after a nine-month lay off when he goes up against South African Osborne Machimana (14-5-1, 10 KOs) on February 2nd at the Emperor’s Palace, in Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. Sanders, now 42, figures to take out Machina, 29, in the first couple of rounds.

Machimana has faced only limited competition in his career, and the few times that he’s stepped up against decent B-level fighters, such as Shane Cameron, Albert Sosnowski and Livin Castillo, he’s been beaten handily. Machimana would do well to try his best to stay away from Sanders as much as possible, because if he gets hit by him it’s all over.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Evander Holyfield or Corrie Sanders?

wladimir353242224.jpgBy Kevin Dinkins: Since destroying Lamon Brewster in six brutal rounds last month on July 14th, there’s been a tremendous amount of curiosity about who IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44 KOs) will elect to fight next. Of the names most bandied about, Corrie Sanders and Evander Holyfield have come up the most. Since Wladimir has a non-mandatory defense coming up, he’s free to take on a lower level fighter like these two, not that they’re not credible opponents, mind you, but clearly not at the top of the class at this stage in their careers. Normally, Wladimir would fight a lower guy, possibly someone in the lower top 10 or possibly as low as 14, but a big problem right now, unfortunately, is that many of the fighters in the top 10 are busy and have fights coming up.

The fighters lower than that, however, are relatively unknown and not something that the cable networks want to see matched up with Wladimir, mainly because it won’t generate fan interest in wanting to view the fight. That’s where Holyfield comes in, and to a much lesser extent, Sanders, both of whom the fans might tune in to watch just for the spectacle of seeing them essentially be put out of their misery by Klitschko, whom at this point in his career is at the top of his game.
