What has happened to Women’s Boxing in the United States?

You’d think that with women’s boxing pioneers like Christy Martin, Mia St. John, Lucia Rijker and Laila Ali all receiving mainstream attention in the 1990’s; the sport would have achieved more glory than it has in recent years. Their was even a major movie produced, “Million Dollar Baby” which featured Lucia Rijker.

Boxing Results – Helenius Destroys Gammer; Braekhus Decisions Yuratovac

By Erik Schmidt: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Robert Helenius (8-0, 4 KO’s) took apart journeyman Scott Gammer (18-4-1, 9 KO’s) in a 6th round stoppage on Saturday night at the Hartwall Arena, in Helsinki, Finland. The 6’6 ½” Helenius, 25, knocked Gammer down four times in the fight, the final time coming in the 6th round from a right hand to the head. Referee Erkki Meronen then counted Gammer out at 1:52 of the round.

Braekhus Defeats Skovgaard

braekus4322423By Erik Schmidt: Undefeated Cecilia Braekhus (11-0, 2 KOs) defeated Vinni Skovgaard (7-1, 3 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision on Saturday night to pick up the to pick up the vacant WBA and WBC female welterweight titles on the undercard of the IBF middleweight clash between Arthur Abraham and Lajuan Simon at the Ostseehalle, Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 98-92, 96-94 and 96-94.

Braekhus vs. Skovgaard on March 14th – News

braekhus564369The First Lady of the Sauerland-Team, Cecilia Braekhus, will take her first tilt at the World Title on March 14 in Kiel. The Berlin-based fighter challenges Denmark’s Vinni Skovgaard for the WBA and WBC belts. “This is a huge opportunity and I am really looking forward to it,” enthused Braekhus, who is unbeaten in ten fights since turning professional. “Thanks must go to my management: I never expected to get a crack at the World Title so soon,” she added.
