Banks vs. Mitchell II on February 16th in Atlantic City

banks4By Ryan Wardle: On November 17 Johnathon Banks walked into the ring looking to many as a stepping stone for heavyweight prospect Seth Mitchell. However, Banks floored Mitchell three times in the second round en route to a second round TKO victory. The two fighters will square off again on the undercard of Adrien Broner vs. Gavin Rees on February 16th in Atlantic City, New Jersey to see if that victory was a fluke.

Both fighters have experience against competition with limited backgrounds. Banks only loss was to Tomasz Adamek who was easily his toughest opponent, a former champion at both light heavyweight and cruiserweight. Adamek won after dropping Banks and then landing a flurry of punches to earn an eighth round stoppage.

The main event featured two undefeated junior lightweight contenders Rances Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KOs) and Arash Usmanee (20-0,10 KOs). And here’s where the controversy ensues.

Barthelemy , a tall, technically correct left-hander who fights conventional was expected to be Cuba’s next professional star after winning three impressive victories last year. Abril battles Bogere for vacant WBA lightweight title on March 2nd

abril545By Jason Kim: Two high quality fighters Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) and Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) will go at it for the vacant WBA lightweight title on March 2nd in the United States. The venue still isn’t decided yet but it will shortly. This is the WBA strap that previously belonged to Brandon Rios. However, Rios failed to make weight and was stripped of the title. Rios has since moved u to light welterweight, leaving the WBA title available to Abril and Bogere.

Abril hasn’t fought since losing to Rios last year in April by a 12 round split decision. Abril fought remarkably well and you can say that he did well enough to deserve the win but two of the judges saw it differently. Abril hasn’t done anything since then and that’s unfortunate because he’ll have been out of the ring for 11 months by the time he does eventually fight Bogere.

Quality Judging is the Foundation of Any Sport

By Robert Dean: There’s a lot of injustice in this world, and it always infuriates people. When you think of the most memorable moment of this year’s NFL season, it has to be the end-zone play in the Seattle-Green Bay game, that cost all the replacement refs their jobs. Even people who don’t watch football were talking about it the next day. This was all because the NFL was too cheap to hire good referees. Without superb refereeing, the results of the sport lose their legitimacy.

The Sweet Science – Why Speed Kills

By LLCoolP: “Speed kills” will be a familiar phrase to any fan of boxing, whether that be as a participant, coach or avid fan. We hear it all the way up from the local amateur coach to Freddie Roach and we hear it regularly. Freddie Roach has often been quoted on his initial conversations with Alex Ariza when the latter joined team Pacquiao in 2008 as the boxers strength and conditioning coach saying “Don’t F**k up his speed!!!”
